What’s next for the Niners?

Moments before Monday’s PFT Live started rolling, news broke of Peyton Manning decision to sign with the Broncos.

And so we had to change the show up on the fly, from start to finish.

I’d planned to ask Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com about the Niners’ chances of getting Manning and how he’d mesh with coach Jim Harbaugh.  The next best thing became a discussion about what the 49ers will do at quarterback now that Manning is out of the mix.

Hey, at least the news broke before the show.

    8.5′ers?

  2. rascalmanny says: Mar 19, 2012 4:34 PM

Manning should have chosen the 49r’s. They were the best of the three teams.

I’ll laugh my tail off if Smith goes to the Fins.

  3. randomguy9999 says: Mar 19, 2012 4:42 PM

smith is highly likely to end up at the phins so prepare to laugh

  4. jackntorres says: Mar 19, 2012 4:43 PM

I hope they start Brandon Weeden for 16 games. It would serve them right.

  5. fafaflunky says: Mar 19, 2012 4:45 PM

    duh getting a qb

  6. shaggytoodle says: Mar 19, 2012 4:46 PM

Yeah the 9ers whiffed on Manning, but failed on what should have been plan B to give Matt Flynn a shot @ the job. I think they really botched this one. I think that would have been a reasonably easy sell. That’s just my opinion. They better hope Kaepernick is ready to be the guy.

Losing, whining, and losing some more

I’m still waiting for Smith’s playbook to end up on ebay.

Manning going to SF would have been a disaster, though. Harbaugh is too arrogant to allow PM to run the offense. The two would have butted heads the entire time. It would have been like Favre in New York, where as Manning in Denver will be like Favre’s first year in Minn.

  11. illiniftw says: Mar 19, 2012 4:52 PM

There are teams with better backup QB’s (Bears for example) than whoever the 49ers can find now most likely. Will be kind of funny hearing 49ers fans wishing for Smith back.

Everyone have a field day, enjoy talking smack in March; it’s your time to shine. Do be around next January and February though…

  13. lioncrazy says: Mar 19, 2012 4:59 PM

Its’ time to suck it for now! That’s what is next for the 9′ers. We’ll see what the braintrust can do with what is out there to bring to the team.

  14. chadmurdigan says: Mar 19, 2012 4:59 PM

I hope Alex Smith sticks it to Harbaugh and the Niners.

Want me back after all that Manning Go a’Courting? Then bring out the big bucks, momma!

I read an article on here before suggesting that the NFL should remove the ability to use the franchise tag from the Saints for their bounties. It would be quite humorous if this did happen and Brees wound up in San Fran. Especially if they finish better than Denver, or win the Super Bowl, although it would be funnier to see it happen with Johnson or Kaepernick starting for them.

    Can you be more wrong?
    1) OC Greg Roman calls the plays.
    2) Alex Smith goes to the line with 2 plays, and chooses one of them at the line.

So again, please inform us where Harbaugh’s arrogance gets in the way?

Listen, as a CSU grad, no one is a bigger Caleb Hanie fan than me, but to say he’s better than a QB San Francisco traded up to draft at #36, who put up RG3-type combine numbers, is ridiculous. It can be argued that Colin Kaepernick has the most physical talent at QB in the entire league, and he plays for the right coach to maximize every other aspect of his game.

I still think Alex Smith sees little hope in Miami and signs his contract offer in San Francisco. No other team will give him a better chance to win and grow his talents.

  18. prplpuzzetrz says: Mar 19, 2012 5:11 PM

What I think would be the funniest thing in
The world, would be to see the ever Annoying, Steve young turn purple, and watch the 9′ers let Tim Tebow run
    The offense! Not
Happening but could be just the thing for
young to permanently go into hiding!

  19. sharks123 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:16 PM

Sticking it to Harbaugh and the 49ers by signing with the phins? Ya, good luck with that.

  20. jonnybrink67 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:19 PM

Manning was never on board so this does not change are offseason plans. We upgraded at the WR position and now we have to resign Alex Smith like we originally had to do.

Why would Smith go to Miami? To “stick it” to SF for giving him 5 more years of opportunities than anyone else would have?

All 11 starters back on D, Alex will re-sign with SF, plus Moss and Manningham. 13-3 last season + Moss and Manningham? I guess we shall have to wait and see..

  21. nowillrepeat says: Mar 19, 2012 5:22 PM

For the first time in Alex Smith’s life, he actually has some leverage.

  22. rethinklogic says: Mar 19, 2012 5:24 PM

  23. nowillrepeat says: Mar 19, 2012 5:27 PM

I actually think the niners should actually do whatever it takes to sign Smith to a long term contract

This will insure they dont make the super bowl any time soon

  24. dolphins4 says: Mar 19, 2012 5:28 PM

The49ers should go sign Vince Young ,Harbaugh can do wonders with him.

  25. freedomispopular says: Mar 19, 2012 5:29 PM

Where does this thing about Jim Harbaugh’s ego and arrogance come from? I have no idea what people are talking about, and I’m thinking its another media creation that people’s imaginations have run wild with.

Dream On. My guess is that Brees is looking forward to the rematch with the 49ers, and will kick their tails across two time zones.

  28. waxthat says: Mar 19, 2012 5:45 PM

Winning. Winning. More winning. Doesnt matter who plays QB, the 49ers will be better this year.

Brought back entire starting Defensive unit.

Added the receivers they were lacking.

A full-season to grasp the Offense and Defense.

Another draft to look forward to with this regime.

Haters, like the Lions fans, who seem to hate us more than not (sore losers). Dont cry when we hurt your RB again next year or knock Stafford out for the year. ;)

You’re right, since he wasn’t a first overall pick or anything.

Got to love the bandwagon Saints fans, don’t know anything about football prior to 2009.

  32. Nevis says: Mar 19, 2012 6:05 PM

Zero and I mean ZERO chance Alex signs with Miami.

All he was doing was covering his rear, he has no interest whatsoever.

And no, the 49ers will not “Sanchez” him by offering a consolation contract. That’s for poorly run teams like the Jets and Dolphins.

  33. rtk23 says: Mar 19, 2012 6:07 PM

    Favre.

  34. ubummer says: Mar 19, 2012 6:26 PM

  35. sixjak says: Mar 19, 2012 6:28 PM

Oh no’s the 9ers are in jeopardy of losing smith. Really? You haters are really trying to turn this into a tragedy and I for one am having a good laugh. Last season he was a still a major bust and the 9ers were a fluke. Now the 9ers are royally screwed if they lose said bust. Keep it coming.

That Harbaugh shook another coach’s hand too hard who told him to “learn the —-in rules!!!” makes him the world’s biggest a-hole is laughable.

This attitude is ok since there is no bounty involved?

As for SF, bottom line is Alex Smith has lacked confidence his entire career. Yes, he was a 1st overall, then has been dogged by doubt the whole time – both from his coaches, teammates, and himself.

Throw in a “Hey buddy, thanks for getting us to the NFC title game, but we’re gonna go after Peyton now” and he’s back at square one.

It’s gonna be a long year in SF.

  38. yournuts says: Mar 19, 2012 6:37 PM

Unfortunately Alex will most likely leave the 49ers because he will remember how Harbaugh lied to the world about him. It would be a lose/lose situation for Alex to go back the 49ers now. He doesn’t have any love in the bay area and he was treated poorly by the niners. The 49ers management really screwed this up good. This is going to destroy the team chemistry, everyone and I mean everyone, now knows that Jim Harbaugh is a liar too, this will affect everyone’s performance on the field.
Good luck niner fans, now you have a tougher schedule, players who know that management doesn’t have their backs and no quarterback to guide the sinking ship. You even have Randy Moss, I hope he’s renewed his Medical Marijuana Card!

  39. shaggytoodle says: Mar 19, 2012 7:04 PM

I don’t get what everyone is shocked about. This isn’t the first time the 9ers have been caught with their pants down.

Dont take it personal man. A lot to do with that is a slight grudge that your fine coach did not choose to be THE MAN at U of M. Great coach, pure jealousy, lol.

  41. liveordie49ers says: Mar 19, 2012 10:33 PM

How can anyone be talking trash right now? This time last year the Niners were hardly even a blip on the radar and Harbaugh was too unproven to argue they would even make the playoffs much less see the NFC Championship. If there is anything to take from this its to trust Harbaugh and Baalke… or atleast Harbaugh. He took a QB that hadn’t been able to prove anything in six previous years and made him good enough to manage the game. Better special teams and the Niners would have been in the Super Bowl. The only team that has/had any interest in Smith are the Dolphins. Does anyone honestly think he will want to go to Miami and fight it out with Matt Moore and David Garrard for his starting spot where he gets to get his butt kicked twice a year by the likes of Brady???? I fully believe he will return to San Fran, lick his wounds, and play just as well as he did last year. I still do not believe he is the answer but he is the best option out there right now and the Niners are the best option for him. If you’re a fan, keep the faith and stop hating a front office that finally got it right for the first time in the last ten years, if you’re not… then unless you’re a Giants fan you should probably keep your mouth shut and worry about what your own front office is doing.

  42. frankyvito says: Mar 19, 2012 10:35 PM

Alex ain’t going anywhere. If Frisco was Peyton’s best choice on paper, why wouldn’t it be Alex’s? He’ll suck it up and wise up

  43. aces79 says: Mar 19, 2012 11:01 PM

you people are acting like smith is good he is garbage if he leaves the niners that would be a blessing

  44. bubba9er says: Mar 20, 2012 1:23 PM

It’s funny that Alex is all butt-hurt about a team trying to go out and get one of the all time great QBs in NFL history.

Kaepernick can launch the ball and run like crazy too. A few more mistakes? Maybe. A lot more big plays? Definitely. Now that we have someone to take the top off the defense, Kap will buy time and drop 60-yard bombs to Randy and Co.

This guy wants more money than Matt Shaub?? What a joke. Time to move on.
