49ers, Alex Smith finalizing contract

NFC Championship - New York Giants v San Francisco 49ers Getty Images

Alex Smith is set to remain in San Francisco after all.

The 49ers, fresh off their flirtation with Peyton Manning, are now in the process of finalizing a three-year, $24 million contract with Smith, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports.

Although many details — including how much of that $24 million is guaranteed — remain unknown, that’s the same deal Smith reportedly had on the table before free agency even started.

Much has changed for Smith since the start of free agency, however. The 49ers started trying to lure Manning, and Smith shopped himself to the Dolphins and Seahawks. It’s been suggested in the last few days that Smith’s feelings were hurt, and that he and the 49ers weren’t seeing eye to eye.

But the reality is that San Francisco is the best place for Smith, and Smith — now that Manning is in Denver — is the best option for the 49ers. This deal made too much sense not to get done, and it appears that it’s about to get done.

Indeed, “no one” wants to play in Miami.

Maybe TO could play in Miami, you never know….

Anyway, it was about time they fixed things up in San Fan.

Am I the only one who knew Smith wasn’t going anywhere, least of all Miami?

  10. dave56dj says: Mar 20, 2012 7:41 PM

Smith is still not a special qb but leaving the NFC west champs to a guy who has never played in the pro’s or Josh Johnson would have been a bigger mistake. Still 8 million for Smith is a lot and was almost a necessity as there just isnt a better answer – and smith is not a good enough qb to lead a lesser team anywhere – so essentially its a win win for both parties.

  11. bluefan204 says: Mar 20, 2012 7:42 PM

Eaglessuperfan- I don’t get it? I’m pretty sure Peyton is always on the “win now” boat. Maybe the fact that SF is about to go from dominant to dormant is why he chose Denver. That or he just has an affinity for horses.

I gained a lot of respect for Manning. Most players would be selfish and go to the best team. An already winning team. Manning instead went to a team that was the best fit (AFC, not competing with his brother) and he will try to lead them to victory.

  34. nineroutsider says: Mar 20, 2012 7:52 PM

It wasn’t the Peyton chase that irked Smith, it was the low-ball offer. He would have signed it right away if he thought it was decent. Can’t blame him…look at what other comparable guys are getting; way more. Sanchez $5 mil/season more as an example.

If Alex continues plays better next year, the 9ers will have gotten a steal as funny as that may seem.

    In terms of ability:

    Alex > Fitzpatrick > Sanchez

    In terms of pay:

    Sanchez > Fitzpatrick > Alex

Kind of hard not to see his point…

  38. chefjayson says: Mar 20, 2012 7:52 PM

Scared to win now? Lol While I agree the 9ers are closer to a championship than Denver…Manning somehow took the Colts and their 2 second o-line and 31st ranked defense to the playoffs every year. I’m sure he’ll be just fine in Denver. Smith will always be mediocre. Blow up his ego all you want…the guys average at everything and resigning him only means the 9ers still need a qb

  39. ronaldmexico says: Mar 20, 2012 7:53 PM

Re-signing Alex Smith makes sense for both parties. However, Harbaugh’s statements last December that Smith was a Pro Bowl player and the long-term answer at QB seem even more ridiculous now after the pursuit of Manning.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever read, you really believe that manning was scared lmao. Something didn’t fit so he decided not to go, but some how he was scared hahahaha this from a fan whose team tired to build a dream team hahahahaha. I am sure your right that stud of Alex smith is a far better option thank that scrub Peyton. Alex smith 4 time NFL MVP, super bowl MVP lead his team to about 10 straight winning seasons. Unlike Peyton who hasn’t done anything in his career and who averaged about 12-15 passes a game last year cause no one trusted him to do more. Errrr wait I think I got that backwards oops.

I’m shocked that this sentiment is coming from a someone with such a commanding grasp of the
    English language.

No heart? Seriously? You can fault Alex Smith for many things, but having no heart is not one of them. After being booed by his home crowd to chants calling for David MFing Carr, he chose to come back to the team, led them to the playoffs for the first time in a decade, and took the team on his back against the Saints not once, but twice to get the lead and ultimately win the game.

If not for Kyle Williams, the 49ers would’ve been in the Superbowl, and it’s quite possible that they’d have won it.

Smith…the Freddy Krueger of QBs. The dude just keeps coming back after we thought it was all over. I am so ready for the next chapter to begin for the QB position. JJ or CK would have been just fine. People seem to forget how bad Alex was in 2010. He was heckled off the field and promised never to return.

He better improve over last year with all the new offensive weapons. If we keep the same production as last year for TDs, 3rd down conversion, red zone efficiency, then the writing is on the wall and we should start grooming CK to take over sooner than later. The schedule is much tougher next year year. At some point, your FG kicker cannot be the top scorer on the team.

Whatever, one more year to see how Alex can improve. Otherwise CK to start in 2013.

  66. Nevis says: Mar 20, 2012 8:47 PM

    How completely unsurprising.

And just as I said, identical contract terms as original offer. They may have moved a couple of million over to guaranteed money, but it’s the same one.

Smith will be competing for his job this year. He is by no means the de facto starting QB.

So, who beat the Saints to get them to that championship game? ALEX SMITH. There’s no arguing that. ———–

Oh heavens. Really? Manning scared of pressure. These comments are beyond laughable. Manning chose Denver because they have a coach who respects the game. Not a punk kid in a headset who throws a fit when life isn’t going his way, and goes out of his way to disrespect other coaches and players. Alex Smith cant touch what Peyton Manning could have done for the ‘Niners. You’re pretty much that kid who says “my toy is better anyway” when you realize you can’t have the one you really want. Get over it. He just likes the Broncos more. Geez. One NFC championship game, and you’re suddenly appalled that the best QB of the last 20 years isn’t chomping at the bit to come in and throw to Mario Manningham and a washed-up, me-first veteran receiver who can’t run anymore. Not to mention the absolute dump he’d be playing in. Meanwhile, sir dink-and-dunk is coming back for a whopping 3×24 contract that he couldn’t get anywhere else after a year where it was obvious the guy had convinced himself that he was Montana encarnate. Nobody should feel sorry for that kind of arrogance. Peyton clearly made the right choice. Can’t believe he even threw for these clowns.

@jackntorres, seems you are still bitter about a “mediocre” team and a “mediocre” QB knocking your Saints out of the playoffs. Saints have their own issues going on…

The Alex support among Niner fans seems about 50/50. This year, with the same coaching staff intact (for the first time in his career) and the additions of Moss and Manningham, there will be no more excuses if he struggles or remains an average QB.

They’re are many teams with worse QB situations than the Niners but Smith MUST get to the next level this year with the added weapons or we may see Kaepernick take over in 2013

  78. fasteddy415 says: Mar 20, 2012 9:36 PM

Posted those numbers with a weak WR corps. Now with the additions that the Niners made at WR I can see Alex taking off.

Niners are now poised to make a run at the Super Bowl. Now that the Niners got Manningham and Moss to go along with Crabtree and Davis you can say goodbye to constant double coverage and say hello to Man to Man Coverage, and now since Smith has a wide variaty of people to throw to watch him pick the pathetic NFC Defences apart and lead the Niners to the promiseland BOOYA!!!. Oh and as far as Peyton Mannings situation SORRY ABOUT YOUR LUCK!!! and enjoy your time in OBLIVIAN, I mean Denver.

niner fans, before you start tooting your horns, you made it LAST YEAR to the NFC championship game without major injuries. You had an extremely weak schedule. Lets see what you do this year now that you have a target on your back and a much harder schedule. You have the same team as last year basically. Your offence still sucks and everyone in the locker room now knows what a liar Jim Harbaugh is. Perhaps you think your a lot better than you really are? You should be thankful for last year but in no way are you a special team YET.

manning slappies are blind to the truth because they’re high on his jock fumes. manning chose Denver because they offered the most guaranteed money. He doesn’t care about winning. If he even plays this year I’ll be shocked. Greedy Swamp Boy.

    Caveat emptor.

Say what u want about him, but unlike Manning he is not scared of the pressure to win now in SF. Lost all respect for Manning
    ———-
There’s no pressure for SF to win with Smith at the helm. Duh. Congratulations 40 Whiners. Mediocrity is yours.

How your Aints looking jack not so good huh?
You love them niners stories you talk about the niners but your team is one of the worst franchises in any sport period you guys are up there with the Clippers. Good luck with the penalties coming your way and get your paper bag ready cause the Aints are back!

Great. This ensures the 49ers won’t be in the Superbowl this year. Alex Smith is a malignant disease that won’t go away.

    Jackntorres,

Still mad about the Niners knocking out your saints? Why don’t you go worry about your bounty punishment.

  96. thermalito says: Mar 20, 2012 10:26 PM

Manning chose the Broncos because he didn’t want the pressure of being expected two win a Superbowl. Manning has never been about winning Championships and thats never been more obvious than now.

Real niner fans hate on Alex, u ain’t knowin bout football chokeland gayder fan

  98. bru308 says: Mar 20, 2012 10:43 PM

Amazing how many people blatantly ignore the fact that he was offered this deal weeks ago, and he just now chose to sign it. Alex could’ve resigned nearly 3 weeks ago. How did the 49ers not show loyalty to Alex?

  99. eknirb says: Mar 20, 2012 11:12 PM

what were the Niners supposed to do–NOT pursie a Hall of Famer?

    It’s a BUSINESS.

“Get this threw ur head niner fans ..alex is a loser!!! kyle might of lost the niners a superbowl bid …but alex did not win the game when it counted! he was the only qb freeagent that had no takers but miami!!!!lol …no one wants this loser ..as a 49er fan im pissed we can not get rid of this idiot….no heart….”

    ***

You were probably having a heart attack when he capped off an epic drive with that TD to Vernon Davis against the Saints.

what a moronic comment. theres little no pressure in SF to win a super bowl. no more than there was in denver before manning signed. all manning cares abut is winning. he is widely known across the NFL to spend hours watching film and studying opponents defenses. always the first guy there and the last to leave…yea thats really a guy who doesnt want to win. you are truly an idiot thermalito. no knowledge hack niner fans living in the 80s with montana or the 90s with young. they have one good season in the past decade and somehow think they are entitled to the “elite team” status.

  102. thermalito says: Mar 21, 2012 12:36 AM

@steelymcbeam6: Give it a rest moron. Ive been following the 49ers for 30 years so don’t tell me about Montana and Young I was there for it. NFL.com and virtually every pundit in the league had already declared the 49ers Superbowl favorites had they landed Manning. They have the best defense in the league bar none, a punishing ground game with Frank Gore and arguably the best TE in the game with a serious upgrade at WR. That team would have annihilated opponents with that defense giving Manning the short fields they gave Smith last year.
Speaking of “one good year” the Broncos are one season removed from a 4-12 season and have holes everywhere. The only real weapon they have on offense is D. Moore. Willis McGahee and first round bust Knowshaun Moreno? LOL. They have a few promising players at LB but their secondary sucks and got embarrassed pretty much every time they faced a decent QB last year. Manning won’t get anywhere near a Superbowl with Denver next year regardless of how much tape he watches. The 49ers were easily his best chance to win a ring next year, but Peyton obviously didn’t make winning another ring in the remaining maybe 2 years left playing a top priority. He’ll be remembered as the stat guy when he retires who’s only ring came against Rex Grossman in the worst Superbowl ever played.

Alex Smith is like Jason Voorhees at this point… He keeps coming back.

Say what you want about Matt Millian, but he at least knew when to cut his ties to a QB bust.

Could you imagine if Joey Harrington kept getting millions of dollars and resigning with the lions…. smh

  104. aces79 says: Mar 21, 2012 10:28 PM

I wish the Saints Bounty Alex Smith so the 49ers didnt get stuck with this bum again
