Jets express interest in free agent BenJarvus Green-Ellis

Patriots' running back Green-Ellis runs with his gloves stuck in his face mask during a practice for the NFL Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis Reuters

The New York Post reports that the Jets have expressed an interest in free agent running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Per Brian Costello of the Post, however, the interest is “preliminary” and no visit has been scheduled for Green-Ellis at the Jets’ Florham Park facility.

As Florio has explained, the 2012 free agent running back market has been painfully slow to develop. Top unsigned backs Green-Ellis, Michael Bush, Cedric Benson, Brandon Jacobs, and Justin Forsett all remain without contracts, and only a couple of them have even made free agent visits.

Green-Ellis visited the Bengals on Monday. Perhaps he’ll visit Rex Ryan’s team next.

What’s the over/under that his first fumble comes if he plays for the Jets?

  2. lakescout says: Mar 20, 2012 1:29 PM

Ryan Grant is out there as well. I believe he’ll draw some interest as he looks to have a little left in the tank after splitting carries for the Packers last season.

Unfortunately for The Law Firm the Pats had Ridley play pretty good near the end of the season and more than likely played his way into the starting role heading into camp. But I hope Green-Ellis doesn’t go to a garbage team like the Jets, he deserves better than that.

You’re better than that Ben. Do you really want to be a part of the laughing stock of the NFL?

Jets trying to sniff Patriot jock once again. Why do the Jets always want to scoop up or feign interest in Patriots players? #jealousy #bumpuptheprice

Considering he already signed with the Bengals. How is this possible?

  9. frankpm says: Mar 20, 2012 1:41 PM

hmmm, as a jets fan, i like Law Firm. but i can’t help but get that awful feeling that once he comes over to our side, the fumbles will finally start… and they’ll make up for lost time…

The best player. Just cause they played for NE jets can’t sign them? That’s freakin stupid..

What a joke. Didn’t the Pats* just sign Cole from the Jets? What about last year with Ellis and Ihedigbo. We can continue before that with Woodhead, Baker, etc.,etc.,etc. But I hate to let facts get in the way of a dumb post…

You mean how the Pats just signed Jets castoff DB Marquice Cole? Or last season how they signed Jets castoff Shaun Ellis?

Don’t you look like the idiot now.

  16. nfl1818 says: Mar 20, 2012 2:14 PM

love the dude as a Patriot but I think he needs to go now as his leverage will never be higher.

If he stays, I see carries getting shifted to Ridley and Vereen and if one of them explodes, I see them becoming the lead back – that will leave BJGE retsructuring in year 2 as the 3rd or 4th back or worse, cut.

His career seems to have a lot of risk in NE given the talent emerging behind him.

  17. evinnie says: Mar 20, 2012 2:19 PM

What is all this talk about the Jets always stealing Pats Players. How about the Pats signing Danny Woodead, Sean Ellis, James Ihedigbo, Marquise Cole. Another stupid comment by a Jets Hater.

  18. nfl1818 says: Mar 20, 2012 2:21 PM

Bozos – good to see you in a Jets chat

now we just need to calm down a bit

and yes, dont have the tally but I would guess the overall flow has been even – I like this Cole signing, Ellis seemed wortha shot.

C Martin was the best player to move as I recall

  19. themonster49 says: Mar 20, 2012 2:21 PM

The Jets haven’t signed anybody yet, not at least if we go by what Ryan Clark meant when he said “no one” wants to go to the Dolphins. They have had ‘interest’ in big names this offseason, and haven’t worked any of them out. This is a disaster. They payed Mark Sanchez. Let me say that again. They, … Payed Mark Sanchez. Money. Real Money! Mark Sanchez! They brought on receivers whose names I don’t really know all that well, if at all. Please, Jets, fire whoever is making your decisions. That’s the only way Green-Ellis is going to work out for you. I really want the Jets to do well, ever, but next year is going to be horrible from the looks of it.

If they get Green-Ellis, at least they will have one single player who performed in the last couple years.

  20. rc33 says: Mar 20, 2012 2:23 PM

If you’re a Jets fan, you better hope Rex/Tannenbaum are looking solely at situations that will better their team…and not some childish “let’s get the Patriots” scenario.
Shonn Greene and BJGE are similar; tough, between-the-tackles running backs.
What the Jets need is a speed guy back there.

Soon as Belichick states he’s “not here to kiss Rex’s rings” I’ll believe the bs the Jets fans are shoveling right now.

The Patriots are…and have been for a decade…the chalk in the AFC East. No secret there.

If anything, this all began with Curtis Martin.

  24. portnoychunk says: Mar 20, 2012 2:33 PM

I’m a Pats fan – both Jets and Pats fans need to knock it off. Both teams have poached players from each other in the past….so NE fans shouldn’t comment about the Jets getting sloppy seconds or anything like that….but the Jets have done the same thing: Curtis Martin, Ty Law, Kevin O’Connell. If anything else it makes the rivalry more interesting. But lets be adults and stop pointing fingers like brats on a playground.

  25. portnoychunk says: Mar 20, 2012 2:35 PM

I’m not sure why the Jets would need Green-Ellis…don’t they essentially have that with Shonn Greene (whom I will never draft again in fantasy…learning my lesson after 3 shots “this is the year”). I would think they would need more of a speed guy/dynamic play-maker.

I’m in plenty of different chats, so no big deal.

As for “calming down”, try giving your fellow Pats idiots the same advice. After all, we all know that nothing that the local mercenary teams do will ever change the fact that they are all still losers in life.

@themonster49 – dude… not sure if you are a Jets fan but seriously, get your facts straight. I am not happy with a lot of what the JEts have been doing (or not doing) this FA’s but almost everything you said was wrong or did not make sense. The Sanchez thing was silly because it was more money and longer time, but we freed up a lot of cap space and can drop Sanchez easily in 2 years. There is also only 1 receiver we have picked up in FA’s and although hes a nobody, at least he came very cheap. As for the Law Firm… you cannot be serious. He is not a real RB. If he were not on the same Offense as Brady who will take all the heat away from a RB, he would have had 300 yards. His high TDs are only because Brady got them to the 1 yard line lol.

Honestly, Jets should not be looking at this dude. Way better talent out there. He has no skill.

A smart man bets money on this. If they were on the Jets, Wycheck throws a foward pass, Brady doesn’t get the Tuck rule, Harris doesn’t catch the ball, Clark doesn’t either, Elways drive stalls, Holmes had a foot out of bounds, Stabler gives it away with the first drop and Ameche falls short. If they were playing against the Jets, Norwood drills it through the middle, Tyree tips it for a pick 6, Dyson gets his last yard, Marshall runs it in the right way, the Colts recover the fumble, and Meredith throws a touchdown. It’s just how it’s been.

I constantly find myself getting enraged when I troll through the comments on PFT. Then I sit and think about what kind of illiterate idiot is on the other side of that computer screen and I feel a little better… but not much.

“Jets trying to sniff Patriot jock once again. Why do the Jets always want to scoop up or feign interest in Patriots players?”

Either a weak joke or someone with brain damage.

Pats and Jets fans alike, just let out a small sigh and move on.

    Jets Suck.

    Nice! Sad… but nice!

Take BJGE if you really need him, Jets. I hope he sticks on the Pats for the right price, but it’s not like him going to the Jets is going to be a huge power swing like my man Curtis did.

  32. CKL says: Mar 20, 2012 3:43 PM

Not ONE person has made a “Benny & the Jets” comment? I am so disappointed (and maybe old…lol)
I hate the NYJ, but I love Benny and I will wish him well wherever he goes, even there. I won’t “hold it against” him for going there one bit. Guys have to go where they can get the best opportunity and if the Pats REALLY wanted him they could have made him a better offer. They obviously don’t think he’s worth what he does. Selfishly, I hope he returns to the Pats though.

    @patsfiend

Very much so, it’s quite machoistic in a sense, lol. The Jets have built some pretty good to excellent teams over the years (’69, ’82, ’98, ’10, ect.) but just almost never have the luck that all championship teams experience since Namath. Nearly every great moment in Jets history is a result of getting a taste of it.

    @rc33

Please, the Jets and the Patriots have been pilfering players and coaches from each other since the early ’90’s, and if anything it “started” with Pete Carroll or Bill Parcells. Where do you think you got Belichick from? Learn your history if you’re going to try to make a statement about the “bs the Jets fans are shoveling right now”

…and one more thing, let’s not pretend that the Patriots have been relevant earlier than the year 2000. Historically, the division has almost always belonged to either the Bills or the Dolphins, mostly the latter. Then again, bandwagon fans don’t remember a 30 year championship drought, 40 if you count the Boston Patriots.
