Could be a good deal. I think the vilma comparison is a good one. Some guys just don't fit well in certain schemes. This is really true with line backers. Take Ryans former teammate Cushing, he was decent but after the move to the strong side inside guy he ha become a great player.

I really do think this was a good move for the texans as your wsil is least important and he was expensive. They get a pick and move up in the 3rd.

As far as my eagles go I am glad that they will not be drafting a first round line backer, they would be much better off with a beast dt or Barron. Wouldn't mind a guy like Zach brown if he is still there in the second. But all in all I think Mathews playing weak side were belongs and Chaney on the strong side with Jordan and Clayton and the midget playing roles, this backer core isn't bad at all.

Andy Reid silently praying noone remembers his proclamation last year that it was either "put up or shut up". For all the accolades heaped on that guy, what has he ever won? First it was he didnt have the right guys, now its they didnt know how to play as a team. Come on! Sooner or later Philly fans will have to see the truth that Andy Reid is a Holmgren wannabe that wont win anything. It dont matter who they get, they will always end up losers.

After losing Mario, why would they trade their defensive leader? They are going to rely on Cushing, Watt and Reed now? That is not a reliable bunch in my opinion. Two second year guys and a reputed 'roid freak. Good luck with that.

Congrats to the Eagles. They got themselves a genuine skull thumper in the middle. Hate to see Meco go but glad he is going to a defense more suited for his skills.

Don't worry about his health. The last 6 games of last season you tell he was finally getting his health back. Dude was popping heads at the line of scrimmage.

I also want to thank the Texans FO for doing right by him and sending somewhere where his skills can flourish.

A great locker room guy as well. See ya Cap. You will be greatly missed in H town.

I love this move if D.Ryans is healthy. Which I think he is. I also think he is a better 4-3 MLB then a 3-4 one.

He also is a natural leader. I once read about how he made his entire college team clean the locker room after a game because they trashed it. It takes leadership to pull something like that off.

Texans fan here. DMR was the weak side ILB that came off the field on passing downs. He's been hurt recently. In this system he's the fourth most important LB.

Texans need money to sign Barwin Brown and Cushing next season.

Giving up a lot of leadership but Cushing Watt Joseph manning Reed and Barwin are still there on D.

Demeco did not fit the 3-4 and only played half the D snaps. His salary was too high for that. They don't save much this year, but save a lot next year so they can re-sign Barwin and D Brown. I liked Demeco a lot and did not like seeing him watch from the sidelines so much last year. Works out well for all three, Texans, Demeco and the Eagles got a heck of a player and leader.

This is more exciting than any of the Eagles' pick-ups last-season and might be the Eagles best off-season pick-up since drafting LeSean McCoy. The Birds have desperately needed this since Trotter's first tour in Philly.
I would still like to see another block-eating interior DL... make teams run inside the wide-9 where Ryans can scrape over-top to make 140 tackles a year for the next 5 years.
Well done Eagles... well done.

Ryan's only played on 1st and 2nd downs. He was a liability in pass coverage. He thrived in the 4-3 though. Sharpton, who the Texans drafted from Miami was a beast until he got hurt. He will take over for Demeco. Great guy and will be missed but he is better suited for a 4-3 IF he can get that nagging arm healed. That injury has seemed to last forever.

good move by both squads…..

texans needing to free up crazy salary cap space for barwin, duane brown, cushing, ect… in the next couple years.

ryans not as vital to texans new defense, but dont get me wrong…. great football player and even better guy.

Go Texans!
_____________________________
I agree completely. As long as Ryans is healthy, this is a great move for both teams. When the Texans switched to a 3-4, they lowered the value that Ryans has for them. He's ok in the 3-4, but clearly much more suited to the 4-3. The Eagles get the MLB they badly needed, and the Texans clear cap space and acquire a draft pick (and improve another) to help them in their switch to the 3-4. The only thing that surprises me is that the Texans couldn't work out a deal to get a 3rd round pick instead, although I am aware that teams tend to overvalue picks relative to players for some reason.

Oh, and to the person who wished they had traded Asante for him instead, are you out of your mind? The Eagles got Ryans for a 4th round pick. Even with his high salary, the need around the league for CBs means the Eagles could get a 2nd round pick for him...or they could keep him and be better prepared to deal with an injury at the position or to play teams that air the ball out to a wide variety of receivers. Let's face it, if you take a look at the acquisitions the Eagles made last year, it was less about competing within the division and more about competing against teams like the Packers. then again, they went 5-1 within the division last year, so it worked for that too.

Everyone keeps saying "after losing williams"...If the Texans had resigned him that contract would have crippled them for years. I don't really follow the Texans much and I wonder how they will replace these guys.

Who is left to play LB? Is Conner Barwin playing like the stud we all thought he was in college?

Not a Texans fan, but I'm guessing they got rid of Ryans and didn't make an effort to resign Mario because neither one played much last season. Mario was hurt and Ryans seemed to give way to Sharpton (not sure, but I think that's the dude I'm thinking of) until he got hurt.

I think this is still a monster D. And that's kind of scary, seeing as how they subtracted two pretty decent players.

As a Diehard Texans fan, whose favorite player on defense was DeMeco Ryans, I honestly do understand this move by the Texans.

In Wade Phillips 3-4 defense the Mike LB can be interchanged. Darrell Sharpton was actually on the field more on 3rd downs than DeMeco, before Sharpton got placed on I.R.

The on field production will clearly be replaced, HOWEVER, the Leadership Captain Meco' brings on and off-the field will be missed.

If Peyton can get cut, anyone can get cut/traded.

The Eagles are getting one heck of a player and team leader. As a big DeMeco Ryans fan, I'm just glad he is going to a good team. I wish him the best. The Eagles are my new 2nd fav. team just b.c DeMeco.

Eagles and Texans in Superbowl.

Lastly, the Texans Defense was #2 in league without Mario Williams for 11 games, and DeMeco Ryans not 100% and not on the field much on 3rd downs. Texans defense is NOT taking as big step back as it seems on paper.

Congrats to all Eagles fans on getting one of the good guys of the NFL.

DeMeco is a great linebacker and team leader. Guy never has issues off the field and always brings it on Sunday's.

His only downside is his salary. He is paid as one of the elite of the game and that brings a big price tag.

My belief is the Texans did this because they didn't want to pay the price for a LB that was only playing 1st and 2nd down in the current 3-4 system.

Texans fans are going to miss a great one. Congrats Eagles! You got a winner.

He must be more damaged than the Texans originally thought to only take a mid round pick for him. He was great before he got hurt.

Looks like Dream Team 2.0 is beginning to build for another steamrolling of the NFL!!1!
____________________
It wasn't just the injury. The team went from a 4-3 to a 3-4. Ryans was great in the 4-3, but not so much in the 3-4. Luckily, the Eagles run the 4-3. Not just that, but Ryans also has experience playing behind a wide 9 like the Eagles started using last season.
