For those of you that aren’t “up to date” on football knowledge. DeMeco Ryans is better suited for a 4-3 schemed defense and lost his job with the Texans because they switched to a 3-4 scheme. So what percentage he was on the field doesnt mean a damn thing. Go back and look at his triple digit tackles a few years ago in a 4-3 defense along with his prow bowls and Def ROY. Im not saying that hes gunna be Patrick Willis but he sure will better than any Mike backer in the NFC East.

I have critized Reid in the past but, hats off to him for this move. I can't help to see it as a steal for what he paid, which is virtually nothing. Considering last year's 4th rd pick produced Casey Matthews. We still need a powerful strong side LB. Bottom line ...it looks like the Pep Boys are turning into The Three Musketeers.

Man, people, stop looking at this as the Texans just getting rid of a Pro-Bowler just because they wanted to or wanted the draft picks. There are a lot of variables at play here. The primary one is the Texans are in cap hell this year and also face the prospect of 3 or 4 key guys (Schaub, Barwin, Brown, etc.) coming up for FA next year. Until this trade, they didn't even have enough cap space for their draft picks.

Why Ryans? 1) He really didn't fit the 3-4 scheme and bascially became a 2-down LB and was getting paid a lot of coin, 2) the Texans have a young LB (Sharpton) who played well and does fit the 3-4, 3) As I said, the Texans need cap space -most importantly NEXT year and trading a good commidty (Ryans) now frees up $10MM+ next year, 4) the Texans saw an opportunity and got picks instead of just cutting a great team guy, 5) they gave Ryans the utmost repsect and sent him to a good team that suits his playing style well.

For people to say the Texans are nuts for making this deal obviously know nothing about the Texans roster, cap situation, and how they and Ryans played last year on the field. Philly got a good player and leader, and the Texans got the cap relief they need, draft moves, and opened up a spot for a young up-and-coming LB.

talkintrashallday says:

Let's give Casey Matthews a break. Yes, he was horrible this year, but he was also a rookie 4th round pick playing a 4-3 with a wide 9 which is probably the hardest spot for a linebacker to play....and he had no real offseason to learn.

Hopefully, given a year to develop he can become a beast. I understand he was a focal point of losing last year but he wasn't a "for who for what" type guy.

This is an "ok" pick up! Good from the stand point that the Eagles had a major need at this position & Ryans is a decent player for the job. This is bad though because the Eagles STILL have a major need at that position as well as safety..and the Eagles problem is that they always try to permanently band aid their weaknesses. Ryans is good, but coming off an Achilles injury is no bueno! He will be a major upgrade to the position, but the Eagles know they are paying for damaged goods. They may have gave up nothing major, but since Trott & B. Dawk left..they have been doing this...see Marlin Jackson, Ernie Sims, Takeo Spikes, Sean Jones & their draft strategy..which is why this is a good move..on paper based the players accomplishments from at least two plus seasons ago

Im stoked about this trade.

Im not saying Super Bowl or anything.

But I do think this was a pretty even trade. The Texans want to dump salary and dont know how Ryans will play this year.

For the Eagles...a 75% Ryans is better than any of our starting LBs. So its win win either way.

And for the haters mentioning salary, the Eagles had 22.3 free before extending Cole. He got a bump this year of only a little. So add in Ryans 6 figure this year, and we still have at least 14 free.

I know he is every down lb, that is why he was sharing time at end of year. That is why he played only 58.3% of the snaps last season. And,of course, the Texans gave away Ryans for a fourth round pick because they thought he returned to pre-injury form.

Just like Steve Smith was a great pickup. The Eagles are experts at picking up washed up big names. Giants are experts at winning Super Bowlds.

Wow the Eagles make another splashy off-season move to have their fans salivating over Super Bowl possibilities. Meanwhile the team that ACTUALLY WON the Super Bowl (2nd one in 4 years) is in the same division and back healthy defensively themselves This should be another fun year of the Eagles still not winning a title since 1960

"alright eagle compadres.. dont get all flustered.. the fact of the matter is that this is only one of the 3 LBs we needed.. there was not a quality starter on the squad at all..

I personally believe Andy made this trade simply because he cringed at the thought of drafting an LB in round 1.. now we can go draft that OL that no one has ever heard of..

+ if this is anything like the last trade for an LB,, we will cut him after the season."

i dont understand why deadskins fans think that they've done anything relevant in recent history to enable them to say anything bad about a franchise that has continually finished 2-3 places ahead of them in the division, and kicks the sh*t out of them every year

You don’t cut a 2 time pro bowler/Def R.O.Y.
If you think Houston made out, your boss needs to give you a urinalysis, this fills a HUUUUGE void for us, helluva 4-3 LB……if you know Football, you know we made out here. You don’t call a guy with a torn achilles a “shell of himself”, at least give him time to recover, and once he did, he was great again.
----------------------------------------------------------
This is the problem with most people on this deal - all they see is the past and not the present.

Ryans absolutely was going to get cut. He's a 7 year veteran coming off 2 major injuries who plays a position that's no longer utilized in the Texans' defensive system. His contract was either going to be restructured again, which was doubtful, or he was going to have to be cut. The Texans found a trade partner which allowed them to get value back rather than watching him leave for nothing.

4th round picks are good value picks and often become starters. They not only got an additional 4th, they also moved up in the 3rd which means a better value pick in that round. They also got cap relief for next year so they can afford to resign other free agents like Schaub or Brown or Barwin.

It's the nature of the business.

GREAT JOB EAGLES!!!!!
Awesome addition!!!

Watch out Eagle haters!!
I know we have ZERO Superbowls, EVERYBODY does......so you don't have to bring it up like it's the fans fault. Most other cities would have given up on them years ago, but we stand strong!!!! It's only going to make the PARADE DOWN BROAD STREET THAT MUCH BETTER!!!!
