Jeff Fisher will meet the media at 3:30 p.m. ET

With defensive coordinator Gregg Williams suspended indefinitely, the Rams suddenly don’t have a defensive coordinator.  Head coach Jeff Fisher will meet with the media at 3:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, presumably to discuss the team’s plans.

Previously, the Rams had remained silent on the issue of Williams’ status, deferring to the league’s disciplinary procedure.  It has been reported that Dave McGinnis or Chuck Cecil could be asked to replace Williams.

The question becomes whether Williams will remain employed by the Rams at all.  Technically, his status will be reviewed at the end of the 2012 season, and the Commissioner at that time will decide whether to reinstate Williams.  The decision will be based in part on whether and to what extent Williams cooperates with the NFL in “any further proceedings.”

From the league’s perspective, it’s a smart move.  If banned for life, Williams would have no incentive to testify in any arbitration proceedings that may be pursued by players who eventually will be disciplined.  Now, with his career hanging in the balance, Williams will show up for any and every hearing that may occur.

Williams also could be involved in other investigations regarding bounties or pay-for-performance programs maintained in other cities where he coached.

Still, for the Rams the right move probably would be to essentially annul his employment and move on with McGinnis or Cecil.  Then, if he’s reinstated, he can try to get an NFL job in the future — even though most owners surely will regard him as radioactive.

Did you by chance catch any of Cecil’s work as DC for the Titans? I’d sooner hire Matt Millen as my GM.

Jeff Fisher is going to be playing the role of The Donald.

    “You’re fired.”

The NFL Network showed a replay of the Rams/Titans Super Bowl a few days ago. Gregg Williams was with the Titans, and I noticed that the Titans were hitting Kurt Warner pretty hard. Just thought that was interesting.

Every NFL owner just became Paulie from Goodfellas…

Paul Cicero: I don’t want any more of that.
Henry Hill: What? What are you talking about?
Paul Cicero: Just stay away from the garbage, you know what I mean.
Henry Hill: Paulie, why would I want to get into that…
Paul Cicero: Don’t make a jerk out of me, just don’t do it…

Beating the Rams this year just went from easy to very easy.

Of course I still expect a Jeff Fisher team to play dirty. It’s the only way he knows how to coach!

Wow, they have Williams by the balls. If he ever wants the chance to provide for his family again, he’ll cooperate. But still, if he does, will NFL teams ever want this toxic guy (and canary) in their organization. He’s SCREWED.

    Character matters.

    Jeff seemed surprisingly upbeat.

“The guy wasn’t all that great, any way. Plus he had this horrible gas in the coaches meetings. Just awful. No one will miss that, I tell you. But speaking on behalf of Gregg, I think any suspension longer than 10 years is excessive.”.

Any interesting DC candidates available, perhaps at the college level, that Fisher might tap for the job?

My poor Rams. 1st screwed over by the patriots cheating their way to super bowl 36 victory and now they get screwed with their D coach getting suspended by Bountygate…..The NFL need to reimburse the Rams for these things that they had nothing to do with!!!

Did you really just compare Jeff Fisher to the Adolf Hitler of financial assault, Bernie Madolff?

  20. chawk12thman says: Mar 21, 2012 3:51 PM

No one will be opposed to your moving on……You can’t lose a whole season and have interim coordinator. The coordinator needs to have longevity and the players need to know his system will be there into the next season.

Tell us your sorry for the situation that the Rams have had thrust against them but your organization doesn’t participate in anything like this and you have no choice but to annul his contract.

It is okay to be nice so, go ahead and tell him you wish him all the best for his future and hopefully, reinstatement down the road.

Did you really just compare a person of Madoff’s ancestry (which apparently can’t be mentioned directly in here) to Hitler? Not defending him, but in principle it seems kinda messed up…

Did you really just compare Bernie Madoff to Adolf Hitler? Irregardless of the merits of the Jeff Fisher=Bernie Madoff comparison it is inconceivable to compare almost anyone in history to Hitler.
As if the absurd claim wasn’t enough you, in essence, end up complaining about an egregious comparison between two men by ironically making one yourself that is exponentially more absurd.
