You do realize it’s the responsibility of the criminal justice system to punish people guilty of breaking laws, right? No one in the league found guilty in a court of law of those crimes has been just excused of punishment and sent back onto the field. The commissioner has no right to punish people simply for being accused of a crime with no evidence of wrongdoing–although that hasn’t stopped him from doing it.

They paid players and didn’t report it. How much is irrelivant. They took money from a 3rd party to pay the players, another obvious violation, that puts anything the league does in doubt. If a 3rd party can pay player, how long before a guy singns a contract for 1 million a year, but gets paid another 4 on the side?

Eddie DeBartolo did that. $400K to Brent Jones. Cost the 49ers a 3rd and a 5th. And they self-reported the crime instead of trying to cover it up.

At least Belichick came clean right away when confronted by the league, otherwise I believe he would have been suspended too.

A guy who commits a murder can get a plea bargain if he admits to it but it’s not a given.

Fact is Belicheat got off much easier. It should have been stiffer penalty. He should have served a 4 game suspension.

Also, about five years ago they put in place a new by-law that said coaches, front-office and ownership had to cooperate with NFL investigations. That’s why the Saints got so hammered. They lied about it for three years instead of coming clean and stopping.
