Everette Brown signs with the Lions

Peyton Hillis, Everette Brown AP

Everette Brown is heading to Detroit.

Brown, a free agent defensive end who played for the Chargers last year, has signed a one-year deal with the Lions, Adam Caplan of Sirius/XM reports.

The 24-year-old Brown is a talented player but has been something of a disappointment since he was taken by the Panthers with the 43rd overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft. He totaled six sacks in two seasons with the Panthers, then was released after training camp in 2011. He caught on with the Chargers but played in only three games last year.

If the Lions can get do what the Panthers and Chargers didn’t and get Brown to play up to his potential, they’ve just added a promising young player at a position where they were already strong. If they can’t get Brown to play up to his potential, they’ll likely be the third team to release him.

A win-win proposition for the Lions. Plus, now they can really think about moving Avril.

If they can get out of him what they got out of Seattle “bust” Lawrence LoJack Jackson when they brought him in, they got a bargain and Avril can go somewhere else!!

Congratulations Detroit, you just signed a human Dreidel. A nice guy, but just a one-trick pony.

BTW, the 49ers thank Mr. Hurney for the 2010 1st round pick they gave up in exchange for the right to draft this bust. Mike Iupati is working out just fine thank you very much!

Whatever they are stacked at D end and like the other guy said they worked wonders with LoJack they just need Brown to be a one trick pony line up wide 9 and get to the qb

Could be a great move for the Lions and Brown. At 6’1″ and about 255lbs Brown is the prototypical DE for the wide-9 defense. He could be the next Jason Babin, a guy who underachieves until he gets into the wide-9, then flourishes.

    PURE GARBAGE!!

Saw him flame out in Carolina…waste of a 2nd round pick (traded our future 1st for him)

Things can’t be this bad in Detroit to where people are actually optimistic about Everette Brown? You people must be taking any kind of news as good news. Good luck to ya lol.

You do understand he’s the fifth defensive end in the rotation right? It’s a one year boom or bust signing. If it works out, that’s cool, if it doesn’t, no one cares.

Also resigned Will Heller, and numbers are in on Tulloch deal: 5yrs/$25.5M; $11.25M guaranteed. Great deal for us to hang onto him!
Sorry a little off-topic, it was more Lions signing news and there was no other place it would go.

Quite the contrary! We’re so deep with quality D-linemen that we can afford to take flyers on guys like this!!

Plays a lot like Cam Wake. Look for this guy to have 11 this year, 17 next if healthy, he’s a straight up beast.

Hopefully this will be the next Lawrence Jackson.

If you have those DTs inside of you and you can’t get consistent pressure you shouldnt be in the NFL

  18. rockbottom37 says: Mar 22, 2012 7:18 PM

Underachiever but to say that he can replace Avril just stupid!

I like the signing but come on bro….we aren’t getting rid of Avril because we signed Everette Brown….

Great sign, boom we win, bust gone next year. Speed on the edge in the wide 9 is dangerous. Made Cliff a star.

    WAT?

Detroit is coming off a 10-6 and a playoff appearance. We just signed a 24yo DE who fits our scheme for nothing. Oh, and we have Calvin Johnson and Matt Stafford locked up for the next 5 years. What’s your team doing?

  22. krakyahead says: Mar 22, 2012 9:36 PM

Lions cellar dwellers no more a healthy Stafford Best and LE Shoure Calvin Pettigrew plus a much improved defense under Gunther Cunningham you dont want to come to ford field anymore for your yearly bye week matchup detroit use to serve up we have a real team now .

@pcline25 so he’s got a spin move? sounds good to me.

  24. metzgerf says: Mar 23, 2012 8:03 AM

I would put money on the fact that the Lions will get more productivity out of Brown than the Panthers and Chargers did. The Lions — particularly Martin Mayhew — pride themselves on getting high-value acquisitions that are still bargains, and this is one. Brown has a lot of the intangibles and that defensive-line-minded coaching staff in Detroit will really show hom how to do things. Not to mention the fact that Brown will have Vanden Bosch, Suh, Avril, Williams, Sammie Hill and Lawrence Jackson to learn from. Good pick-up for Detroit.

  25. tjjivehour says: Mar 23, 2012 8:30 AM

Great guy, puts in great effort, but needs to learn something other than his patented spin move lol Well at least Detroit is as good a spot as any for him to improve his craft (if you can’t get pressure with that interior, there’s something wrong with ya)!
