The NFL really tried to let the Saints off with a warning; the NFL did all they could to try to avoid punishing the Saints. Don’t you people get it? By their continued disregard for the rules, the Saints FORCED the NFL to punish them. They deserved everything they got.

@djjasonpaul, I’ll put the words out there that everyone reading your post is thinking…shut up and get back to your pipe. IF Shockey told, he did the right thing, so he shouldn’t be villified for letting people know about this disgusting program. That being said, Warren Sapp is a loudmouth jackass and always has been. I take his statements with less than a grain of salt. It amazes me how “fans” of the Saints can get so upset over a deserved ounishment. Then again, most people NOT upset about a bounty program likely never set foot on a field of play. It’s one thing to hit hard, quite another to chase money for the act of intentionally injuring someone. When you put money above people in the same organization as you (NFL/NFLPA), you’re beyond worthless. Vilma, the same guy, doung the same thing in college, should be banned for life due to his proven track record. Payton deserves his year, he knew about an illegal program, paying to injure players (proving what was already obvious, they had the dirtiest defense on tge planet), then purposely lied to the man in charge about it, he’s lucky he just got a year. Makes me proud of Steve Smith fighting back when they attacked him in the end zone.

Wow, so you agree with everything Goodell has done but disagree with anyone who actually speaks about it? The only things you hear about from the players are either 20 years out of the league or current/former Saints. Of course they’re going to defend the team, just as you do despite claiming to “agree with Goodell”. But just know that by following up with “I’m saying they are not the only team to do this.” is EXACTLY the talk of an apologist, clear and center. You can’t have it both ways. No other team in the league has been mentioned as a possible target of a bounty hunt and when there is one, as Costas said, hopefully they too feel the full brunt of the commissioner’s office. Until then, quit talking out of your ass and look at the facts. Like it or not, if you say they are guilty but everyone does it you are an APOLOGIST. Take your cheap Super Bowl and shove it up your ass, we have a more current one than your douche bag team!!!

Interesting to think you have a better grasp of what goes on in the league than Costas or
anyone else for that matter. The actions taken by the Saints were not only unethical but illegal
AND felonious. Call Goodell and those supporting his decision any name you want but the
self-righteous ones are playing in New Orleans and it’s not out of the realm of possibility
prosecutorial actions could be coming down the road for those that sanctioned injuries beyond the rules of the game. Thus far I have yet to hear anyone from an opposing team speak
out against the ruling and seriously doubt there will be as it’s their livelihood at stake. Good
luck protecting Brees from the knee rattling hits he’s bound to sustain after handing the ball
off this season. Reap what you sow and quit being a myopic apologist for the pathetic actions

The saints weren’t the only ones to do it, probably. Perhaps, there were other teams that the NFL sniffed and they stopped before it got out to the press. But the Saints were too stupid to keep doing it, after they got caught by the NFL. The NFL claimed to not have enough evidence to officially levy the hammer, or so they claim. Really, the NFL is worried about lawsuits from players who claim the NFL did not do enough to protect them. That’s it. That’s why they came down hard. They’re more concerned about the lawsuits than a player bounty, but they have to set an example, and the Saints were too stupid to be the example chosen.

The NFL is doing this for their own reasons, but the Saints shouldn’t be doing something illegal, anyway.

As a Steelers fan, I love James Harrison and have rarely agreed with anything Goodell has done. But James sounded like a raving lunatic in that interview (a “puppet” and a “dictator”?). For once, Goodell got it right. Payton took money from a convicted felon to bypass the salary cap and run an illegal bounty program aimed at injuring players. Enough with the whining from Saints and former Saints.

Goodell is doing what needs to be done. In todays NFL player safety has to be job one. This is not the 70′s NFL, LB’s in todays league are 260, 27- and even 280 lbs and run 4.5 40′s. Linemen on both sides of the ball are 325-360lbs and they run sub 5.0 40′s.
Jack lambert one of the NFLs best ever was 220 lbs, Dick Butkis was 245, Jack Ham was 225, Jim Marshall was 248, Carl Eller was 247, Alan Page was 245, Mike Webster on the the great centers ever was 255lbs.
Point is the players in the league nowdays are much bigger and faster which results in more violent hits more concussions and injuries. If the Commisioner does not take a stand to help player safety you will see players careers drastically shortened.
I just slam my head against the wall trying to figure out why none of the players coaches and fans in Saints nation can figure out why these punishments are so harsh.
Lets put it this way for you brain dead Saints. Remember Tonya Harding ? She paid a guy to injure her competition ( Nacy Kerrigan) to make it easier for her to win. She was found GUILTY of a crime and was banned from her sport for life, which is what I think Payton and Loomis and Williams should get and every player involved should get the one year. How is what Harding did any different than what the Saints did. They paid team members to injure opponents to make it easier for them to win.

Payton gave a twice convicted felon access to the team, who gave money to injure players. While Goodell isn’t making a big deal about this aspect publicly, I’m sure it’s a big reason the league came down so hard; and particularly on Payton.

Goodall did the proper thing and maybe it isn’t harsh enough, bad enough the bounties but lying about them and putting it down on paper these guys are just STUPID. Think about this rationally for a second. Goodell has let the NFL become run by lawyers. Coming down hard on players for head shots is strictly a preventative action for future lawsuits. Past players are now suing the cash cow that is the NFL more and more, so the NFL has to show they are taking strict action or they leave themselves open to a tort lawsuit. Attorneys/ agents are salivating over the potential tort lawsuit currently.

Likewise, with the bounties, the NFL has to again to strict action to prevent lawsuits from players injured going forward.
