Andy Reid on Peyton report: I have final say, and Vick is our guy

New York Jets v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

Shortly after we passed along the Los Angeles Times report that Eagles coach Andy Reid had been interested in signing Peyton Manning, the Eagles issued a statement from Reid stressing that Michael Vick is the man he wants quarterbacking his team.

“We look into everything, as all teams do,” Reid said. “And I have the highest regard for Peyton Manning. But as I said publicly last month, that wasn’t the direction we were heading in. Michael is our guy.”

The report from Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times also said Reid was ready to walk away from the Eagles if he didn’t get more personnel control, and that he now has the personnel control he wanted. In his response, Reid said he has final say on personnel matters and that is unchanged.

“As far as the personnel control, I have had final say on personnel matters for quite some time here and that’s never been an issue or a point of contention,” Reid said. “Our front office works very well together and that’s one of our strengths.”

Every free agent is going to the Eagles. Every one … every year. It’s their formula, and so far it’s worked to perfection.

Does PFT stand for Peyton Football talk?

Easy to say now that you lost out on Manning.

  4. shady4hof says: Mar 23, 2012 12:08 PM

Reid has made decent personnel decisions that have put the eagles in a position to be very competitive next year. Now the test is to see if they can reach said expectations.

I’ve never seen a head coach do less with more. With a real head coach that knows how to manage a clock and do other things this team should have won at least 1 Super Bowl over the last dozen years.

    And still NO SUPER BOWLS

  8. thejuddstir says: Mar 23, 2012 12:26 PM

LMAO…once that L.A. Times story broke, it didn’t take Mikey Vick long to call Reid and start whining that it was a dis at him and he needed Reid to say something to make him feel better cuz “his feelings were hurt”. NFL players love t talk tough but you ever notice how easily their feelings get hurt!!

  9. sirmixalotalotalot says: Mar 23, 2012 12:28 PM

No team QB’d by anyone other than Brady, Rogers, Stafford, Brees, or the other Manning wouldn’t look at Peyton Manning. If healthy, Peyton is still one of the top 5 QB’s in football even at 36 and that means that he is better than 27 other teams QB’s. Goal is to put the best team on the field.

  10. jimw81 says: Mar 23, 2012 12:28 PM

There has to be a power struggle btw Andy and Howie. This is the prime example of the ‘gold standard’ crap that comes out of the front office to deflect the real problem on this team. The problem with the team is that Andy is on a power trip that is most likely having him canned at the end of the season. Plus we have a front office is run by ego driven people. It explains why there popularity in the city has fallen to third behind the Phillies and Flyers.

You can have Vick. I’d rather have Eli who has two rings competing against you. Oh wait, you did beat the giants during the regular season…which means nothing…unless you haven’t won a SuperBowl in say…more than 50 years?

  12. jam3sxc says: Mar 23, 2012 12:34 PM

Are you serious… Vick is not a good quarterback at all. I don’t care about his stats at all. He is regressing slowly but steadily. He will do so bad this year that people will think it’s a whole new person.

  13. tombrookshire says: Mar 23, 2012 12:39 PM

You can tell that he has control of personnel the same way he has control of games. Horrible decision making in both regards.

  14. prrbrr says: Mar 23, 2012 12:39 PM

Its not Andy Reid the Coach that I get mad about, it’s been Andy Reid the VP of football operations that’s ticked me off. Recently, how many first and second round draft picks has his personnel department screwed up. Since ’06 1st: Bunkley, no pick, no pick, maclin, brandon graham, danny watkins. 2nd: Justice, kolb, Abiamiri, Trevor Laws, mccoy, allen, jarrett

I almost puked through my laughter compiling that list. Any other VP of football operations would have been fired with that list. Maclin and McCoy are the only two worth mentioning through 13 picks. UGLY Reid ain’t got no aliby. BTW, Reids kids were arrested in Jan 2007. 06 was his last decent draft.

  15. deathmonkey41 says: Mar 23, 2012 12:43 PM

it’s always nice when Andy Reid can take a few minutes away from eating to talk down to the press.

  16. meytonpanning says: Mar 23, 2012 12:44 PM

I think Andy Reid is just a huge Madden fan and just wanted to make an unbeatable team for Xbox Live. How else do you explain 3 starting caliber cornerbacks, Mike Vick, Vince Young and 3 deep threat receivers.

  17. dryzzt23 says: Mar 23, 2012 1:09 PM

Vick will be the reason why Reid ultimately gets fired.

Vick has just ONE season where he eclipsed 60% completion percentage.
    Vick has just 2 seasons with 20+ TD passes (20 in 2006 & 21 in 2010)

Vick is a mediocre QB who will never be elite ala Brady, Manning (s), Brees, Roethlisberger, Rivers.

If Philly was smart, they would go out and get a top tier backup QB or one that can at least threaten to take Vick’s starting job.

I am not “hating” on Vick, I’m just telling it like it is or for some of you out there I’m just “keeping it real”

  22. east96st says: Mar 23, 2012 1:31 PM

Do I blame Andy for sniffing around? No. He asked and he should have asked. But for all his flaws, Andy is not delusional. He HAD to know there was zero chance that Peyton was coming to the NFC East. Archie may be a bit too controlling, but he makes damn sure his boys are in position to succeed. He wasn’t going to let Peyton steal Eli’s thunder and he wasn’t going to let the Giants D line get a minimum of two shots each season at finishing Peyton’s career.

  23. bleedgreen11 says: Mar 23, 2012 1:31 PM

This is what has always scared me about Reid, he has way too much power in Phily.

  24. beauregard says: Mar 23, 2012 1:35 PM

Peyton Manning is like that very pretty girl wearing a skimpy dress that walks into a party. If your wife sees you looking at her you profusely claim “No dear, you’re the one I’ve always wanted”. Meanwhile you fantasize though the rest of the party…..

  25. myeaglescantwin says: Mar 23, 2012 2:07 PM

    @ fin72

you need to check you facts man.. Andy Reid is the cheif decision maker on personnel & THAT IS WHY EACH AND EVERY YEAR THERE IS AT LEAST ONE GLARING NEED ON THIS TEAM..

when we were stacked & ready to take the title, we never had WRs,, then it was the undersized defense, then it was the CB, now its LB..

he has made exactly one move to address the key position of need on our team.. there are still 2 more to go..

if Andy thinks that he has done us a service with his personnel selections,, he needs to get his head checked.

for the longest time the only WEAPONS on this squad was the Defense and the OL..
back when McNabb was pegging gophers with passes.

  28. ipk310 says: Mar 23, 2012 2:22 PM

For Reid its not about Vick or Peyton. Its about control. Like others have stated, he is butting heads with Howie. I truly believe the line about being ready to walk away…these last few years post JJ have been mediocre. plus with Peyton he would challenge the WCO and with Vick he can crush or build him up as he sees fit. Plus when the time comes for our new QB to come in noQ will question the move, thus making him appear to be the genius for pulling the flawed Vick

I love having BIG RED , here in Philly.

    It may be true ,
he hasn’t won the Super Bowl yet ,
but it will come sooner or later.

    but…
    1. we are mostly-always in the playoffs
    2. We can beat the snot out of the Cowboys and Redskins .. and usually split w the Giants.

So…that’s at least 1 good NFC East game.

which … is all we really like to see.

  31. myeaglescantwin says: Mar 23, 2012 2:57 PM

  35. wydok says: Mar 23, 2012 3:18 PM

Reid is VP of Football Operations. He’s had control of player personnel for years.

  36. andyreidisarrogantandfat says: Mar 23, 2012 3:20 PM

of course he went to denver. reid is stubborn and overbearing and would never let peyton control the offense. fox is a defensive coach and peyton essentially goes to denver and becomes the offensive coordinator, which is what he wanted all along.

  37. NoPayneNoGain51 says: Mar 23, 2012 3:25 PM

“No team QB’d by anyone other than Brady, Rogers, Stafford, Brees, or the other Manning wouldn’t look at Peyton Manning. ”

One of these things is not like the other. 5 SB MVPs and some guy who hasn’t won anything all mentioned in the same breath without a hint of sarcasm. Bravo.

  44. philliesphan says: Mar 24, 2012 2:31 AM

Roseman needs to go, a non football guy playing fantasy football just as Asante said. Not that I am a big fan of Asante, and I thought it was time both he and Andy left the building. As long as the Eagles have Howie Roseman as a GM, they will not succeed. Hire someone who knows something about football instead of looking at names and salaries.

  45. kevsright says: Mar 25, 2012 6:50 AM

Reid: I have final say, & Bad Newz is our guy..

That decision will FINALLY cause the Eagles to say “goodbye” to Andy, who should have been gone after the Super Bowl loss!!
