Broncos sign Jacob Tamme

Dhani Jones, Jacob Tamme AP

The Denver Broncos were widely expected to sign at least one former teammate of Peyton Manning, and now they have.

Jacob Tamme, a free agent former Colts tight end, has signed a three-year, $9 million contract with the Broncos, the team has announced.

Tamme’s entire four-year career has been with the Colts, and he had a breakout season in 2010, catching 67 passes for 631 yards and four touchdowns. In 2011, with Manning sidelined for the season, Tamme’s production declined significantly, to 19 catches for 177 yards and one touchdown.

The Broncos already signed one tight end today, Joel Dreessen, and now Tamme is the second. There’s been talk that they may be interested in another former Colts tight end, Dallas Clark.

With the Patriots having so much success with the Two-TE offense, the Broncos are going to try for the first ever six tight-end offense and take the league by storm.

LETS GO BRONCOS! PICK UP DALLAS TOO!

  5. thcnote says: Mar 23, 2012 3:39 PM

We are good on TE now. We got a CB. Now just need to take 7 DT in the draft.

  6. prosb4hos says: Mar 23, 2012 3:41 PM

Makes sense, Broncos going away from using fullback into primary Ace Formation (that’s 2 TEs @thankheavenfornumberseven) and 3 WR sets as Colts did with Peyton.

  7. osage44 says: Mar 23, 2012 3:41 PM

I guess they hope one of these TEs might work out.

  8. bspurloc says: Mar 23, 2012 3:43 PM

    Tamme is pretty good…
Just wondering if the rookie QB will bother passing to him after Peyton goes out for the season on the first sack

  9. babyhorsemorgan says: Mar 23, 2012 3:43 PM

This is not the same Jacob Tamme as the gentleman who led a wagon train of Mormon settlers through the Rockies in 1837.

  10. efriedo says: Mar 23, 2012 3:47 PM

I guess the Broncos were about 120 million under the cap… good for them

  11. CJ says: Mar 23, 2012 3:47 PM

The Broncos are well on their way to implementing the first Wide 9 offense: 1 Center, Peyton Manning, and 9 tight ends.

They’re only about 3 TEs short, and the draft has yet to come. Stay tuned.

In other news: Juan Castillo has been re-assigned to be the Eagles new OC and install the same system.

  12. jimmysee says: Mar 23, 2012 3:50 PM

Do we see heavy tight end formations in the offing because Peyton can’t heave the rock down the field anymore?

Or because he is not so mobile and they need the extra blocking.

    Or none of the above?

  13. mwcarolina says: Mar 23, 2012 3:52 PM

i dont see Clark being a Bronco now.

  14. savagenation2011 says: Mar 23, 2012 3:53 PM

Sign every player out there to try and make Melon Head Manning look good. God forbid they try and help Tebow last year, signed no one, even got rid of the best WR Lloyd

  15. jharmon64 says: Mar 23, 2012 3:55 PM

No way I see Clark coming over now. Nice job.

  16. trubroncfan07 says: Mar 23, 2012 3:55 PM

It’s a good thing because the Broncos are thin at tight end with Virgil Green being suspended for the first six games. Good job Elway!

Did Joel Dreessen just get Drew Stanton’ed?

  18. lollygagger8 says: Mar 23, 2012 3:58 PM

Omg, what are the Colts going to do for TE now??

  19. rockthered1286 says: Mar 23, 2012 4:00 PM

In response to the Tamme signing, Dreessen informs the media that the Broncos promised him the #1 TE spot and he demands a trade.

    Good pick up for Denver.
He’s only 26 yo and knows PM’s gyrations
    R. Wayne, A. Collie are the only two recievers the Colts have now.
Who’s the new kid gonna throw to?

What makes you think he’s done after one big hit? Because your a MD? I haven’t heard one doctor grandstanding on television that Manning is at anymore risk for permanent injury than any other player. And you know how MD’s hate grandstanding for the camera…

  23. gitchogameon says: Mar 23, 2012 4:15 PM

Dreesen is a nice pickup. The Donkos were around 50 Mil under the cap. Should be about square, assuming.

Anyway, look forward to having the chance to set up a trust fund for my Raiders on who takes out Manning w/a good clean put you into retirement vicious hit.

  24. thatguywhoisactuallyamiamisportsfan says: Mar 23, 2012 4:16 PM

Oh, and they need to draft a QB. When Peyton gets injured week 2, as of right now, it would be Weber starting… Why hasn’t anyone realized that? If Manning goes down, WEBER is going to be throwing to the new tight ends.

  25. jbaxt says: Mar 23, 2012 4:17 PM

Who? Can’t wait to see the donks finish the West in 3rd place. No WR’s, no RB, no TE. Manning can’t throw to himself. And even if he could tin foil holds up better. The faders trade 2 high picks for a worthless Palmer, now the donks take a geek necked/should’ve retired/not worth 20 million a year Manning.

  26. boltfansmith says: Mar 23, 2012 4:20 PM

Not sure why some of you are surprised. The Colts often used 2 TEs, especially earlier in Manning’s career, when they had fewer good WRs. I would bet that the Broncos will try to install an offense as close as possible to what Manning is used to using. If there are any OL concerns, they may use multiple TEs in passing formations and keep one or both in to block to keep Peyton upright.

I would be surprised if they signed Clark at this point, as they have 2 TEs, plus whatever might be left over in Denver.

    __________

What’s the problem? Weber is underrated and has a good future. A rookie QB isn’t going to lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl if Manning goes down.

Speaking of Manning’s former teamates, Im curious as to where Saturday is? I know on Mon or Tuesday I was expecting to hear about Saturday by Friday…Arent you at all curious as to where Saturday will spend his upcoming Sundays?

  31. andyreidisfat says: Mar 23, 2012 4:52 PM

Tamme is better than last years stats show. I think he can have a big year if manning can stay healthy

  32. yssupasigninnamnotyep says: Mar 23, 2012 4:57 PM

What I can’t believe is that MegaHead’s neck is strong enough after all those surgeries to actually keep that gigantic melon upright.

    LOL

It would have been a good bit if Saturday hadn’t signed with the Packers on Friday.

Good! TE’s are a QB’s best friend, especially one who’s inevitably going to have a little rust…

Lloyd asked to get out of Denver he even said it in a interview on the Herd. Know what you are talking about before you open your pie hole. I’m sure completely changing the offense to do what Tebow could do didn’t help him at all. How many coaches would have put in a college offense? But good point.

  38. rushmatic says: Mar 23, 2012 6:33 PM

Donk fans: You don’t want Dallas Clark. They guys is old, fragile and a wuss. Better off with Tamme.

  39. LoCoSu@%s says: Mar 23, 2012 6:34 PM

So we’ll have the Denver Colts? (appropriate that the head honcho is Elway)

  40. laxcoach37 says: Mar 23, 2012 7:36 PM

Wow! Must be nice to have all this crazy Cap Money to spend! These deep pockets almost always come back to haunt a team. Take a look at the Cowboys, Jets, Bucs, Dolphins, Panthers, Cards and Ravens. Poor and cant do a thing to improve. In comparison, look at the Eagles and Raiders… They spent a pot of gold and where did it get them? The Giants, Pats, Packers and Texans are all Playoff bound because they continue to find Value( not big FA names) and build through a savvy Draft. Sorry, Broncos you might get near the Playoffs because your Division is Lame, but the AFC North and East will gobble you up in January and that is IF Peyton even makes it that far. My guess is after he goes out hurt, the TEBOW chants wil restart.

With your wealth of football knowledge you still believe that Manning needs his WR to make him look good. Yup hes just an average QB who’s WRs have made him look good his whole career. Sounds to me Like you don’t know much about football at all. And no I don’t care that you played high school football.
