Freddie Mitchell jailed for failing to pay child support

NFC Championship Atlanta Falcons v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

Former Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell hasn’t caught a pass since 2004, but he keeps finding ways to get his name in the news.

Unfortunately for Mitchell, his name keeps coming up because he’s breaking the law. A couple of weeks after news of Mitchell’s problems with the IRS comes word that he’s currently in jail for failing to pay back child support. The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Mitchell is in an Orange County, Florida jail because of an Indiana warrant.

When Mitchell surrendered to authorities on the tax charges, he was released on his own recognizance until his arraignment on the condition that he rectify the child support issue. Mitchell was arraigned on the tax charges on Thursday and he’s in jail, so it would seem that he did not satisfy his end of that bargain. His court-appointed attorney on the tax charges knew nothing about the child support issue.

Mitchell was arrested on charges of failing to pay child support back in 2009. It is not known if his current predicament is a result of the same charges.

After years of avoiding capture for impersonating a WR, it was failure to pay child support that did him in.

No, he’s not the only one. It is absurd. Placing Freddie in a cage is a horrendous methodology for trying to get Freddie to pay money in the form of child support. The reason being is because now its physically impossible for him to obtain enough money to do just that. Not to mention now he’s being taken care of by taxpayers.

“Am I the only one that finds it absurd you can be jailed for failure to pay child support?”

No. It’s going to be hard for him to make payment arrangements from jail.

This happens to athletes all the time. They don’t pay close enough attention to their finances, and run around spawning new versions of themselves all over the place. Their child support monthly payment amounts are base on what they make, so when you make 3.5 mil per year, your payments are massive. Fast forward five years later, and that same now retired player is making 50 grand, but still paying like he’s making millions.

The NFLPA does a lot to try to ensure that young players are given resources to help them manage their money, but very few avail themselves to them. I know, I used to work for the NFLPA, and was part of that process. Clearly Fred didn’t get the memo, but putting someone in jail in these circumstances seems counterproductive.

“He’s terrible. You can print that.”

  32. dsims7 says: Mar 23, 2012 11:04 AM

OK, After I posted I read some more post. Here is why I dont feel for this idiot. Of the 3 cases I personally know about, they get you between 9AM – 10AM and you get to see a judge that day. They normally get you after you ignored 3 – 4 warnings. When you get the warning, all you have to do is call, make arrangements for current payment AND also add a few $$$ to make up for the behind payments. If you ignore all the warnings and do not call, they come to your house/job and get you. When you see the judge you must at least have current payment to get out of jail and make arrangements for back payments. If you don’t have current payment, you sit!!

In either case, you know the police are coming to get you, when all you had to do was call. So like my brother, he’s an idiot! (and my brother was $130.00 a month? Should have let him sit until he signed agreement to make my $945.00 a month go away!)

  33. TheWizard says: Mar 23, 2012 11:14 AM

He can thank something other than his hands for this predicament.

  34. yevrag3535 says: Mar 23, 2012 11:16 AM

severs28 – failure to pay child support is a crime and is a major problem with society today. The more money made the more excuses men and women have NOT to do there duty for there children. It is a scam that the players pull, TO a couple of months ago. They think they are above the rest of us, so throw him in jail. He isn’t ever going to pay anyway. Any money this crud makes in the future will have a lean and it will be attached so he will have to pay. With that being said, this bum won’t work ever again.

  35. TheWizard says: Mar 23, 2012 11:17 AM

It’s going to be hard for him to make payment arrangements from jail

I’m sure he was given ample opportunity to do just that before they put him in a box.

And you can bet it will be one of the conditions for his release.

    @spinmasta,

I don’t necessarily disagree with what you’re saying, except that they probably already gave the guy multiple chances to make arrangements that would have avoided jail (ie, garnishing a percentage of his wages each month–if fredex actually has wages at this point–or something like that) and it’s still not working.

I highly doubt he just missed a payment for a month or two and they locked him up. I don’t claim to be an expert on this stuff, but usually they just want their money and are willing to work with you before they suspend your drivers license or lock you up.

  37. mnlittle says: Mar 23, 2012 11:50 AM

Those of you who haven’t gotten caught up in the child support system have no idea what really goes on within it. They create an impossible situation with all of the “extras” that they put on you and then threaten you with a gun and jail when you can’t pay everything. The reason those of you who are under informed on this issue is because you are too lazy to look into it or it simply hasn’t gotten you or a family member, yet. Don’t worry they will get someone close to you sooner or later and you’ll know what a fool you have been to throw around the “d” word.

He got “Fred-Exed” to the slammer!!!

    Nice!!!

  39. billsfan1 says: Mar 23, 2012 12:34 PM

i am curious as to how he never got another chance to play… i know he wasnt very good but everybody not named Rae Carruth seems to have gotten at least a second chance, like JP LOsman or half the Bills O-Line this decade

Anyways, the child support system is a sure fire failure because in many cases, this money hardly goes to the needs and wants of the child. I understand that it is based of income percentages but the fact is that it does not take 15,000 a month to raise a child. Many times women use this is a way to get a job, so that they dont have to get a job.
The problem arises because at one time, men paid nothing and got away with it, so there is an overcompensation in regards to this…
anyways, anybody know the real reason Fred x never got another shot. he was only in 4 years so he was young

  44. rtk23 says: Mar 23, 2012 2:58 PM

What a clown, just like his daddy and pappy.

On another note, child support is a joke. It hardly ever goes for the needs of the child, but to support the lazy, welfare, section 8 living hussies of the world. The problem is the courts. So in addition to Fred being a clown, so is the system.
