I hunk Mara really made his bed with this comment. HE ADMITTED THAT THEY BROKE NO ACTUAL RULES! He said they violated “the spirit of the salary cap”.

Let’s take the first part of that statement; THERE WAS NO SALARY CAP YOU MORON! And show me in the rules the part that lays out punishment for “violating spirit”! Much less violating thevspirit of something thwt doesn’t exist. Hahaha!!! How stupid does that sound?

Being that Mara stood to gain an obvious competitive advantage by punishing those two teams specifically for breaking no rules, even by his own admission, I think, quite frankly, he’ll be lucky if if his team doesn’t lose draft picks.

That would be sweet justice for his obvious attempt at screwing over division rivals, clear collusion and mob-style back room deals.

But he is not, of course. And in more ways than one, he is very much in the wrong.

Mara is wrong because the only thing of which the Redskins and Cowboys are guilty is failing to honor a shady gentleman’s agreement between 32 billionaires who don’t want to pay their employees any more than they have to. What the NFL, Mara and the other owners did, effectively imposing a salary cap when none had been agreed to by the other party (i.e., the players) in their collective bargaining agreement, was patently wrong. To punish the teams that didn’t go along with the wrong, and to so strenuously defend the punishment as though it were right, is the height of arrogance.

Mara is wrong because, by effectively admitting collusion, he’s giving the NFLPA ammunition for a new fight the league does not want. The union had to drop all pending litigation against the league as part of the Brady settlement last year when the lockout ended. That included the collusion charges they filed against the league for the suspicions they had about this kind of 2010 activity. Mara’s admission could well qualify as new evidence that could allow the union to file new charges. And because the NFLPA is named in the Redskins’ and Cowboys’ complaint, it has the option of obtaining discovery on collusion should it wish to pursue action against the league. The union is upset that the league backed it into a corner here, effectively forcing it to agree to the penalties against the Cowboys and Redskins under the threat of a reduction in this year’s salary cap, and would love an opening from which to attack on this.

Mara is wrong because he’s the chairman of the NFL Management Council, which is the group that imposed these penalties, and he’s the owner of a team that plays the Cowboys and Redskins twice each year and competes with them for the same division title. That’s not to say Mara did this on purpose to get one over on two division rivals. But one of the first things we’re taught in any journalism class is to avoid even the appearance of impropriety — to steer clear of any activity that could ever allow anyone to accuse us of engaging in a

People are defending these jerks, because the biggest jerk, Goodell is trying to make rules on the fly and you cannot do that. There are 2 parties, owners and players. They cant reach an agreement to a new CBA so we get an uncapped year. Now the owners make and UNWRITTEN rule not to overspend in uncapped year (fyi unwritten usually means borderline criminal – otherwise why wasn’t it just documented?) Now which party do you think is hurt by an agreement not to spend? thats right the players, and what do you think NFLPA would do if owner publicly said they agreed not to spend money? They’d be pretty pissed wouldnt they?

The only reason why NFLPA isn’t supporting this is because DeMaurice Smith was too concerned about his own job security.

This has nothing to do with the Giants, it has to do with the administration of the NFL. Besides talk is talk. Why don’t you ask Eli what it’s like to play against (or should I say againest?)Washington’s Defense?
Facts are facts. Washington swept New York this year, the DC’s defense totaling eight sacks in two games, New York’s totaling five. Look it up.

What he and Jerry did was stab the other owners in the back by exploiting the uncapped year. I’m quite sure both of these guys have used loopholes to get rich in other lines of business as well. The owners probably hate and resent these guys for using “shady” tactics and they would love to see both punish for their dirty deeds. SHADY TACTICS AND DIRTY DEEDS does not mean illegal. DannyBoy and Jerry did nothing illegal. In fact, if 20 or 30 teams exploited the uncapped rule the same way, this would be a mute topic. The fact that these 2 rich guys COULD freely spend their money probably adds to the animosity.

If the punishment is struck down, the Giants should lose draft picks to “maintain competitive balance.”

Washington, Dallas, and a bunch of teams who underspent only did what was legal.

I remember in the NBA the Cleveland Cavaliers had a gentlemen’s agreement on a contract with Carlos Boozer. Boozer signed with the Jazz. “The Spirit of the Salary Cap” or “gentleman’s agreement” has no ground legally.

Does the CBA govern how much Goodell is paid? How many owners need to vote for a new team to come into existence? Exactly. The CBA is not law for everything in the NFL. Only in regards to players. When it only involves teams or the front offices the CBA means absolutely dick.

Just the cheating giants trying to gain competitive advantage in the East because they know dallas is on the rise and with the Skins bringing in RGIII and new receivers will be dominating the division in the next few years. Crazy how one of the guys putting out the fine is a owner of the Giants.

Wow….. I can’t believe all the haters of the giants and their owner – not only has the mara family – along with the rooney family in pittsburgh been 2 of the oldest family-run franchises in the nfl – but also probably the 2 most well-respected franchises and owners …… i don’t get where all of the hate and anger comes from – oh – that’s right – i forgot….. too many super bowl trophies.
And i also think we will be waiting a loooong time for the skins or cowboys to “dominate the division for years”……. that’s actually REALLY funny – all of the losing and jealousy really makes for some pretty stupid comments from people.

Nothing can be further from the truth. The league CANNOT just change the rules whenever it can. The league agreed to the CBA with the NFLPA, and it also approved ALL CONTRACTS that the Skins and Cowboys had that year. You can’t just undo that. What the league has done is create out of thin air a penalty when no rules were broken. The league isn’t changing the rules, the league is IGNORING the rules, and creating a punishment for breaking no written rules.

When you understand as a fan of football that the Cowboys and Redskins broke ZERO rules, then you understand the situation (regardless of your hate for either team, which is fueling a lot of your statements about them cheating or lying, which neither is accurate. This is easy platform for hate talk for most of you who agree with the punishment by the NFLPA and the League.
