Reebok making one last push with Tebow jerseys

Reuters

On April 3, Nike will unveil its new line of NFL jerseys.  Until then, Reebok retains the exclusive apparel contract.

And so, with Tim Tebow being traded to the Jets, Reebok gets one last shot to move some merchandise.

At NFLShop.com, Reebok-manufactured Tebow jerseys can be purchased.  Only nine days before the flip gets switched to Nike.  (Curiously, the Peyton Manning jerseys currently available at NFLShop.com are manufactured neither by Reebok nor by Nike.)

With all due respect to the folks at Reebok, fans should wait for the Nike jerseys.  Even if, as expected, there are no changes to the appearance of the Jets jerseys, there apparently will be differences in the way they are made.

And, obviously, the Jets jerseys Tebow actually wears will have a Nike, not Reebok, logo on the sleeves.

It’s hard to fault Reebok for trying to cash in on Tebowmania.  Still, smart consumers will delay any jersey purchases, for any player, until April 3.

Unless you are a truly smart customer and refuse to purchase anything from Nike.

Nike, Microsoft, there’s a few companies out there that anyone with even the most modest cranium should avoid like used CDs from the Spice Girls. And sorry to say it Mike, you ain’t one of them.

Like many feel that Vick crossed a line that cannot be apologized away, Nike did too, and did for many many MANY years before asking forgiveness.

  2. Reebok jerseys are great. Nike makes terrible stuff in comparison. I have some Nike college jerseys and they fit terrible. Hope they don’t mess up the nfl jerseys.

The flip gets switched? Did you mean the switch gets flipped? You flip a switch, you don’t switch a flip.

  4. Why should consumers wait?????

Obviously you either will have some financial gain by advocating this approach or you have friends at Nike who have convinced you to make this ridiculous proposal. (post)

Please leave football fans out the the corporate BS. We just wanna enjoy the game.

  5. First of all, Nike sucks for all it has portrayed itself as…I don’t own anything with a stupid swoosh on it and never will.

Second of all…people who buy sports jerseys of any kind are mindless sheep who have no identity of their own.

  6. Just saw some Nike NFL shorts for the bears….only 40 bucks and about 800 times more stylish than reeboks versions.

Can’t wait for the new era hats either!!!

  7. The only difference is the completely oversized swoosh instead of a small reebok symbol. Everyone knows theyre reebok jerseys, but they need to be about football first and foremost. Reeboks were. Nikes are about marketing.

The consumers don’t need to be smart. They just need to be aware of the switch.

  9. “It’s hard to fault Reebok for trying to cash in on Tebowmania. Still, smart consumers will delay any jersey purchases, for any player, until April 3.”

Smarter Jets fans will not waste their money on any Tebow jersey until they are assured this is not a 1 year experiment and Tebow is actually a legit NFL starting QB.

  10. And some people, and by some I mean 10’s of millions, couldn’t care less about Nike’s labor practices. They’ll sell out every tebow Jersey that is made now, before the change. Heck, they may even be collectible, as they are verifiably the first tebow jets jerseys and the last run before the change in manufacturers.

  11. Fascinating that the Manning jersey available is the super cheesy one with the team logos on the sleeve while the Tebow one is the replica of the field worn one not the logos on sleeves one. I agree that waiting is smart there is no connection between author and Nike just that the point of buying a jersey is to replicate what the players wear. Even if the colors and striping do not change the way the jerseys will be made is. Also with the Swoosh replacing the Vector purchased Tebow jerseys will not replicate what he wears this fall.

  12. I am not a fan of having these logos on uniforms, period. It invites the possibility of “well, there’s already one logo on the uniforms. what’s another?” – said the executive of ___ oil company/fast food company/tech company/toy company.

I would be disappointed if 10 years from now, NFL and NBA jerseys looked like FIFA and NASCAR.

  13. Slow day huh Mike? I think I speak for most of us when I say that maybe in the future you could refrain from dispensing the consumer advice. Most of us are smart enough to figure these things out on our own. Thanks though.

  14. smart consumers will delay any jersey purchases, for any player, until April 3

actually, truly smart customers won’t buy an NFL jersey, ever … NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL jerseys are about the worst bang-for-the-buck purchase available.

  15. Does anyone else feel like the writers for this blog know nothing about sports and rely on stupid “Tebowmania” for articles. I read a sports blog to get an interesting opinion on facts related to sports….not fashion and/or religious advice.

  16. This must be one of the most pointless articles from PFT in at least the past 24 hours.

The jersey is still the jersey no matter who makes it.
I own some team affiliated T-shirts and I don’t recall being overly worried if the tag says hanes, fruit of the loom on it

  17. Can’t wait for Nike to take over. There stuff is brighter and stylish.
Why would anyone want a jersey of a back up? Did Reebok produce any Drew Stanton jerseys?
Jets fans keep the faith Sanchez is out guy.

  18. Nike and the Federal Govt. have all those websites and manufacturers shut down and locked up tighter than a drum. Feds are going into collectible shops looking for knockoff uni’s and pulling them.

  19. As with anything in limited supply, collectors will find more value in the Reebok version.

  20. tebow or any player barely sees anything from jerseys. AP wanted to change numbers and it would have cost him a million but they will make a jersey that is obsolete in a matter of days because reebok will make a killing. the structure is messed up. this proves the point, that people buy jerseys for the player and all the money goes to the corps and the nfl.

  21. what about the consumer who is simply unwilling to wait until April 3rd? We are talking about a tebow jersey here for crying out loud, I want mine YESTERDAY!!!

Yet you are on here commenting on it moron. Speaking of no identity..what the hell does your postname mean??

No!…SMART consumers will SAVE MONEY with the CURRENT official jerseys made by Reebok that are/will cost LESS than the Nike ones.

DUMB consumers (or those who simply like throwing away money on the “shinier new toy”) will SKIP on the CHEAPER official jerseys and PAY MORE for the nearly same official jersey April 3rd!
