Tim Tebow greeted by anonymous griping from Jets teammates

tebow2 Getty Images

Mark Sanchez, you’re not alone anymore: Your new backup quarterback is being questioned by anonymous quotes from teammates, too.

Tim Tebow’s trade has just become official, and already unnamed Jets players are talking to reporters about why they don’t think it’s going to work. A New York Post story this morning is headlined “Some Jets wary of Tim circus,” and details that a number of players who will share the locker room with Tebow don’t think he belongs there. None of them, of course, were willing to put their names behind their opinions.

“Several current Jets, who spoke with The Post Saturday, asked not to be quoted but expressed disbelief at the team bringing Tebow in,” the story says. “The idea of a backup quarterback having a press conference is something they can’t wrap their heads around, and they know it’s just the beginning.”

The Jets have led the league in anonymous quotes since the season ended, with unnamed players opining to reporters about topics like Sanchez lacking the leadership the team needs and Santonio Holmes being a divisive presence in the locker room. That has led to a backlash, with Sanchez ripping anonymous sources as “gutless,” and Jets coach Rex Ryan saying anonymous sources don’t speak for the team.

But anonymous sources do speak for themselves. And some of the anonymous sources in the Jets’ locker room apparently don’t think highly of either Sanchez or Tebow.

THIS is the jests… poor management, attention seeking and back stabbing.

I hope you nj “fans” enjoyed those two fluke seasons. That’s as close as you’ll get to anything other than 4-12.

The Post is a rag and shouldn’t use anonymous sources. No quality newspaper does. Can’t get it on the record, don’t run the comment.

  10. CKL says: Mar 25, 2012 8:16 AM

So basically Joe Namath was right…again. This whole signing was a publicity stunt.Having a presser for a backup QB proves that.

  11. joetoronto says: Mar 25, 2012 8:16 AM

They’re both 3rd string QB’s, time to finally get a starter.

  12. jetslag44years says: Mar 25, 2012 8:16 AM

Somebody in the Jets organization better keep an eye on Santonio on April 20th

“And some of the anonymous sources in the Jets’ locker room apparently don’t think highly of either Sanchez or Tebow.”

And that would put them in the vast majority.

Im so glad for the arrival of Mr Tebow. Its just what the team needs to repair a fractured locker room….no way it would add to dividing it right? Lets go get a gosh darned snack!

Rex, Sparano, Sanchez, and Tebow. 4-12 would probably be a blessing for the jets . All of a sudden it doesn’t suck as bad to be a Miami dolphin fan. I wasn’t too thrilled about Garrard as our backup, however I’d take him over Tebow or Sanchez any day!

  21. ravensrooster94 says: Mar 25, 2012 8:25 AM

  22. TaiwanMike says: Mar 25, 2012 8:26 AM

I can see people who are playing 60-70 plays a game being upset that someone who plays 10 plays a game gets all the attention. It’s amazing how much press one person who is worth a 4th round pick gets.

  26. bluefan204 says: Mar 25, 2012 8:28 AM

What a bunch of chicken&$#@ cowards! Just like their loser coach, they’re all talk. They are now officially a travelling circus, and Rex will serve as the Big Top. BWAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!

Meanwhile, the “lesser” team in NY, according to Rex, just had another parade, and are awaiting their rings in August. Life.Is.Good.

  27. typicalprofootballtalkreader says: Mar 25, 2012 8:28 AM

The New York Jets are National Football League franchise which I mock. They make questionable football decisions, and therefore they appear foolish in the eyes of others. Rex Ryan is fat, therefore we must all state this fact clearly, as often as possible. Tebow, is a subpar National Football League quarterback as is Mark Sanchez, because of this, I am now laughing tears at prospect of both quarterbacks who are now teammates. I am also an insufferable douche, and you have read the words that I have typed.

  28. dionoil says: Mar 25, 2012 8:29 AM

  29. hmpennypacker says: Mar 25, 2012 8:30 AM

I feel sorry for Tebow. This can’t have been where he wanted to go, although he’ll get more playing time with the Jets, and as soon as it starts to go wrong and he starts turning the ball over the NY media will eat him alive. Like a christian in the lions den.

  30. dumplingsrbrown says: Mar 25, 2012 8:30 AM

  34. jnbnet says: Mar 25, 2012 8:33 AM

If this was going on in the Patriots locker room, the malecontents would be identified, and they would be gone. As a Patritos fan, I have no love for the Jets however, they have to take care of this problem in order to have any real chance of winning the AFC East.

  35. brianjoates says: Mar 25, 2012 8:34 AM

There is actually nothing wrong with the Jets holding a press conference, MLB teams does it for just about every “major” player a team bring in. The Jets organization is excited about their new player and they want to show him off, they think he is going to help their team.

Now, the question is how will Tebow answer questions.
Question number 1- Do you think you’re a better QB then Mark Sanchez and you should be the starter week one?
Question number 2 – Has anyone in the Jets organization told you that you will not have an opportunity to compete with Sanchez for the starter job?
Question number 3 – Now that the spotlight is even brighter by being in NYC, how will you not allow your off the field commitments/ obligations to get in the way of your team/player development?

  36. gmen1990 says: Mar 25, 2012 8:34 AM

It starts with the coach. Get a more humble but aggressive coach and they’ll have a much better team in and out of the locker room.

  37. jagwired32 says: Mar 25, 2012 8:35 AM

  38. stoney18 says: Mar 25, 2012 8:36 AM

If you can’t put your name to what you say about someone, do you really have the cojones to play team football? Cromarties ‘Ole’ on Timmy’s rushing TD last year says it all! (I’m from Jersey and I can’t believe all the cry-babies on this team! They must be from outta state.)

  41. mecheng04 says: Mar 25, 2012 8:40 AM

These are issues with the Jets organization, not Tebow, but it certainly does nothing to dispel the criticism that this is a publicity stunt.

Tebow most certainly didn’t charter his own jet to NY nor did he arrange his own press conference.

  42. joesphkerr says: Mar 25, 2012 8:41 AM

I have no axe to grind with Tebow. For these clowns that have to remain anonymous with there quotes, well that is a different story. Those bozos need to nut up or shut up. With that said, I think it is going to be fun watching this locker room implode.

  43. mecheng04 says: Mar 25, 2012 8:41 AM

  44. pastabelly says: Mar 25, 2012 8:42 AM

  47. suhisabeast90 says: Mar 25, 2012 8:49 AM

Maybe those “anonymous sources” should leave there and come to Pittsburgh. We would welcome you back Mr. Holmes. Would be nice to have a football thrown to you from a REAL quarterback, wouldn’t it? And bring the other unnamed source too. I’m sure Mr. Cromartie would love playing behind the Best Linebackers in the League. Not to mention he and Troy would have like……20-30 interceptions each…….

  48. geauxjay says: Mar 25, 2012 8:50 AM

The media still thinks Tim Tebow is the top story 5 days later.

And yet I’m the crazy conspiracy theorist to suggest that Roger Goodell made sure this was done simultaneously with the Saints punishments so that America could be distracted from the most outrageous and ridiculous punishment in the history of the NFL.

The people who are against this outrageous abuse of power have been silenced because all the media wants to talk about is how TIM TEBOW IS COMING TO NEW YORK CITY!

As long as New York City’s happy and in the spotlight, nobody cares that the Saints fans just had their team’s season stolen from them. Even though there’s evidence that other teams had bounties and nobody else has been punished yet.

But go ahead and keep talking about the league-orchestrated distraction instead. Smoke and mirrors, baby!

  49. legacybroken says: Mar 25, 2012 8:50 AM

  70. suhisabeast90 says: Mar 25, 2012 9:18 AM

Tebow is a good guy, I wish him all the luck. I just hope the Jets lose! It is hard to think of Tebow losing though…..the man just wins everywhere he goes. I really thought Jacksonville was a good place for him. He is from there, there QB situation is pretty much open and new ownership WANTED him there all along! Something tells me he could have been the face of that franchise for 10+ years! I think if a team could just wipe away all that they know about QB play and just let the young man play and learn and have fun, they would have a Good Quaterback that wins games. I really don’t get the knock on a guy that WILLS his team to victory. I seems like his team mates dig deep and want to win for him. How can I guy like that be hated so much? Is it because of religion? He just seems like such a great person, I really don’t know how he could be bad for any locker room. We all joke and laugh at him and put his skills down, but the truth is he is a winner and a better person than most of us will ever be! …..Please someone comment on why people want Tebow to Fail, cause I don’t get it……….

Dude, you are straight up delusional!

Why would Goodell want a distraction from the punishment that proves to the world and the courts that player safety is a top priority?

Tebow and the Jets have nothing to do with the Saints players and management lying to the NFL and covering up the bounty system they had. And it really doesn’t sound like New York is “happy” about Tebow or gives a flying flip about bountygate when they have their own issues. Go suck some crawfish.

it would serve him right to fail! and trust me, he will fail all on his own like he did in Denver because he didn’t win us ANY games and I’m so tired of hearing that. Tebow is so “humble” yet when those billboards went up did he back up Orton and say he’s our starter? nope he enjoyed every second of it. he’s humble and good yet he lies about not being allowed to make the decision on where to play next to try and stay in the good graces of the Jags so when he fails miserably and is ran out of NY he has somewhere to go. but he chose this place because he knows he will start because Sanchez is awful. but so is Tebow. he needs to go back to college and again there where professional skills aren’t needed because he has none.

What’s really funny though is all these jackass Jets fans ranting how they hate Tebow till in week 6 he takes over as starter and leads them to the playoffs.

This willl be what jets fans will be saying then oh Tebow is the best people should lay off Tebow he isn’t as bad as they say how else could he win all those games.

  94. kingjoe1 says: Mar 25, 2012 10:01 AM

Overall this is not a Tebow or Sanchez problem. The problem is that there a Jet player who believe a little bit too much in themselves. It appears these unichs think with a different QB they would have gotten past the AFC championship game two of the last three years.

My belief is that the Jets needs to evolve the culture and slowly bring in examples of effort and teamwork. Tebow is not just a guy to back up sanchez; his work effort hopefully will embarrass those lazy jags that think they made it and can just watch the cash pile up.

  95. mateoelgatto says: Mar 25, 2012 10:01 AM

  96. pinball123 says: Mar 25, 2012 10:05 AM

I am wondering how many reporters asked the Broncos about their opinion on Caleb Haney being their backup? (all jokes aside!). None – because Tim Tebow is catnip to the media – including this site. It’s not about football, it’s about their desire to compete with the likes of kim kardashian – and it’s sad.

Tebow might be a good fit as a wildcat if the Jets run that. He’s a young QB who needs to work on some things. He’s a wonderful and charitable human being…someday as fans we might get a reporter who writes something like this and then moves on…but for now we get annonymous quotes printed about a backup quaterback – and Jets have the problem? Please media look for a mirror somewhere!

Duh, the locker room is divided and dysfunctional. The leader of the team isn’t even there yet. He’ll be there at noon on Monday. It’s Tebow time, like it or not!!!!!!

Geeze, this just started and it’s already pathetic–we need Rex to start yapping and get this bi-plane production off the ground. Heh, at least you helped start a New York football team begin their run to the Bowl last year–just wasn’t the nyets.

Ive been a Jets and Sanchez fan for a while now and this Tebow thing is disturbing. Its one thing hate the Jets because our HC asks for it but lay off Mark Sanchez if you look at the numbers Mark is on par if not better than QBs around his age. I still do not understand why ownership would want to take away playing time from any of these 2 kids(cant have 2 QBs). Rather than just letting Sanchez learn the ins n outs of football. No disrepect to Tebow I appreciate his winning ways but this has the potential to be a house divided come this season

    Really?

Ever hear of a “rag” called the Washington Post?

Brought down a sitting President of the United States, over a little thing called “Watergate”?

Used an anonymous source called “Deep Throat” ….. maybe you’ve heard of the whole thing?

    Read much, Yets fan?

Why dont you print something useful like a updated salary cap or whos left in free agency. People bitch at their jobs everyday but doesnt prevent them from doing it so to say people had something to say doesnt mean much

Poor Tebow. Elway actually managed to send him to a worse situatuion. Can you hear the circus music playing in the background. And don’t blame Tebow this team has been a joke since the end of last year and no one in the organization has done anything to rectify the problem. Instead they decided to make it worse. So here is what is guaranteed to happen. You can book it: Ignorant jet fans will spend the next 5 months trying to make themselves feel better by calling anyone with a negative opinon “haters.” Then the team will procede to collapse horribly on the field. Then those same ignorant jet fans will blame it on Tebow when in fact the problem existed long before he arrived. Then Rex Ryan will guarantee a super bowl in 2013.

  115. j0esixpack says: Mar 25, 2012 11:14 AM

  116. mick5430 says: Mar 25, 2012 11:20 AM

    I don’t buy it.

This site is starting to publish articles that are simply written to get a response. To me, if you are quoting anonymous sources, you might just be writing B.S. based on your own opinion to see how riled up you can get Jet’s Fans.

If you don’t have a source you can quote, don’t write it. Otherwise you are just adding to the problem. Articles like this don’t give any credibility to this site. Is this place turning into a Tabloid or what? We get the same anonymous sources in the National Enquirer. What a bunch of crap.

Why don’t you leave the poor kid alone. Tebow is still just a kid and can’t catch a break, simply because of what he represents. With all the straight up idiots in the NFL like Deshaun Jackson and Cromartie, Brandon Marshall, etc.; you are going to give an honest, hard working guy like Tebow a hard time? What has happened to this country?

  117. moagecu says: Mar 25, 2012 11:23 AM

Yes the Jets shouldn’t have called a press conference for this trade, but Tebow, being the good guy everyone says he is, should know there shouldn’t be a press conference and requested not to do it. But then again all he cares about is having his name in the paper.

  118. voiceofsweetness says: Mar 25, 2012 11:23 AM

I’m 100% serious if I were a GM of another team I would have a tough time trading a 7th for either of these QB’s the Jets will throw out their this year. Between Sanchez’s head and Tebow’s “real” qb skill and distraction, it would be tough to part with. I probabably would for Tebow and get the circus over with now and move him to h-back/fullback.

  119. suhisabeast90 says: Mar 25, 2012 11:24 AM

He still gets paid well, but it has to really mess with your head. If they can’t get behind him, maybe they sould trade him. Don’t get me wrong I WANT to see the Jets lose, but thier Managment is really messed.

I live in NY but I am not a JETS fan. Its hard not to follow the goings on though cuz they are in the news all the time. Being an avid sports fan the one glaring thing I can identify as being wrong with the Jets is that they do not play or act as a team in a team sport. They are a bunch of spoiled me first players all grouped together and when one doesn’t get his way he pouts and whines about it. When something goes wrong its always the other guys fault after all, look at me I am great! Plus there is no true leader amongst the players like most other teams have. So in iconic NY style you can say in one word their Superbowl chances- Foragetaboutit!!!

  123. emma333 says: Mar 25, 2012 11:30 AM

I keeping seeing those that say none of this is Tebow’s fault…Well, it kind of is.. He has been self-promoting since high school. Now, he had the chance to return to his roots and be the home town hero, it’s not good enough. He must have the bright lights of the big media market. Make no mistake, the Jaguars gave a very similar offer to the Broncos, and Timmy chose.

  124. davidcl77 says: Mar 25, 2012 11:31 AM

Not living in NY, I might be missing something, but from afar, it seems like Stanton and Greg McElroy are the classiest and most “team first” of the bunch.

Serr8d, I just want to let you know that the Civil War ended hundreds of years ago. You can let go your hate for the North and put away your gun. It’s safe.

Wow, is this the crowd Tim is bringing to NY? Oh my.

BTW PFT, where is Sanchez’s stats and accomplishments as a 4 year QB. You seem to have no problem ignoring the facts and trouncing all over his ego while promoting your “choir-boy image” wannabe QB at ever turn. You have no problem repeat those “unnamed sources” negative comments against Sanchez because it suits your agenda. But here’s the truth, for as bad as you’re making Sanchez out to be, he never back into any of the play-offs like Tim did last season.

Sanchez helped carried the Jets into the play offs two seasons in the row and almost took them into the play-offs only to missing out his third full season as a Jet. Something tells me if Tim had accomplished all that Sanchez had you would be promoting them endlessly like you are his well aided 7 wins in 8 games hype. It took Eli Manning 4 years to make it to the SB, his brother 8. Yet Sanchez is already being told he’s not good enough just because he failed to take the Jets to the play-offs. Well if you treat him like you do Peyton and all your more “preferred” QBs maybe he will succeed.

But it seems you folks in the media, not only impose your biases unto the NFL fans but you seem to have forgoten what integrity means, and your selective memory reigns supreme when you want to have your own ego diven way.

NFL is now owned by the MEDIA. Money does talk.

If your team did better than that, than you can say your team is better than the Jets.
If your team didn’t, than you must say your team is not as good as the Jets.

A person who fails at most everything he or she does, then tries to compensate by pointing the finger of blame on everyone else.

The Jets are full of Losers. The Haters on this blog are also Losers.

Tim Tebow has accomplished more with less skills than any person on the Jets team and probably any person commenting on this site. He’s 100% heart and that is why he has a loyal following.

For his own sake, Tebow should have tried to push for a trade to the Packers since they allegedly showed interest. That team has coaches that are known for being able to help young QB’s with mechanical issues and they probably would have enjoyed the challenge. There would be no QB controversy because Rodgers is a stud. And you know the Packers fans would shank anyone trying to chant “Tebow” at training camp. 155. northsidesteel says: Mar 25, 2012 3:16 PM

Tim Tebow is an fine young man. He has tried to do the best he can with what skills he has for whatever organization he has been a part of. That said, I can’t imagine this stint with the Jets working out for him. The front office must be having seances to contact Al Davis on how to take a valid franchise and run it into the ground. Tim doesn’t have the skills to be an everyday quarterback in the NFL, and while his christian fan base would like to make this fiction become reality only because they wish it so, it won’t happen. Much like the bible, it’s not reality.

I wish Tim well, and hope that he succeeds in whatever endeavor he pursues. I just don’t think this is the one.

Why do you Dolphin fans always troll on Jets stories? Dude, worry about your own team! You guys have not WON ONE FREAKIN PLAYOFF GAME IN OVER A DECADE! It must be an envy thing, especially with no playoff wins to speak of.

In that regard, Garrard is actually a pretty good fit. He has 1 playoff career win over the first decade of his career, something the Dolphins organization aspires to. In essence, Mark Sanchez has accomplished four times what Garrad has in a decade in his first three seasons in the league!

Well, actually more than that. Garrard has a 3-3 TD-INT ratio with a career playoff QB rating of a 76. Hey at least he has a QB rating in the playoffs. Thats another quality the fins organization looks for.

Now compare that to Sanchez, with a 9TD-3 INT ratio, and a 94+ qb rating ranking 7th all time in NFL playoff history. Yea, you can do the math. Not to mention he was the best player on the field in a lot of those 6 playoff games he played in, including outplaying Carson Palmer, Philip Rivers, Tom Brady, and Ben Roethlisberger.

But yea, I could see how you feel better now. Call me when you win your first playoff game since beating the Colts in 2000!
