LaDainian Tomlinson is one of the better running backs left on the free agent market, but that says more about the caliber of unsigned backs than what’s left in Tomlinson’s tank.

In a recent interview with XX 1090 San Diego, Tomlinson said his preference is to keep playing, but that he hasn’t ruled out calling it a career.

“Obviously, I’m a free agent and I’m still open to playing,” he said. “I’m just taking my time through this free agency stuff, just continuing to explore my options and make a decision here on my future depending on my options.

“So I’m excited about the future either way it goes, if I continue to play or if I don’t.”

Turning 33 in June, Tomlinson has generated little to no interest around the league. Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith has already publicly confirmed Tomlinson won’t be returning to San Diego.

If Tomlinson is truly intent on continuing his career, he may have to wait until a training-camp injury creates an opening on some team’s backfield depth chart. Especially with a draft chock full of young running backs looming, no clubs are rushing to sign up Tomlinson.
