William Gay tweets that he’s joining the Cardinals

Twitter has become the preferred avenue for athletes to announce their plans this offseason and William Gay is not averse to hopping on board the trend.

Early Sunday morning, Gay tweeted that “O yeah by the way I’m #Birdgang now west coast,” which, when translated out of Twitterspeak, means that he’s decided to play for the Cardinals in 2012. There’s been no official confirmation from the Cardinals, but they were one of several teams pursuing the free agent cornerback in recent days.

Gay started 15 games for the Steelers last season, but he projects to be a replacement for Richard Marshall in the nickel for the Cardinals. Patrick Peterson and A.J. Jefferson have the starting spots well in hand and Gay gave up a fairly high completion percentage to the receivers he covered in 2011. He could also see some time at safety, especially if Greg Toler returns from a torn ACL with his game totally intact.

The move to Arizona reunites Gay with Ray Horton. The Cardinals defensive coordinator was his position coach in Pittsburgh before moving to Arizona to work with Ken Whisenhunt, another former Steelers assistant/

Why is this news? he’s a pretty terrible corner.

  2. Kyle Orton's Hangover says: Mar 25, 2012 11:42 AM

Couldn’t #birdgang west coast also translate to the seahawks?

  3. meglasdad says: Mar 25, 2012 11:43 AM

Every AFC North quarterback just shed a little tear.

  4. jaggedmark says: Mar 25, 2012 11:44 AM

Why couldn’t #birdgang west coast mean Seahawks?

  5. zoidenflak says: Mar 25, 2012 11:50 AM

    …no more gay-bashing in the Burgh…

  6. fsf7 says: Mar 25, 2012 11:56 AM

    Steelers West continues.

  7. eyeh8goodell says: Mar 25, 2012 11:58 AM

Word of advice, Arizona. Put him on the other team’s weakest receiver when it comes to man coverage.

  8. thehighhat says: Mar 25, 2012 11:59 AM

Whisenhunt’s continued formula for success: Sign as many ex-Steeler’s as he can and try to develop a young QB. Too bad bad he can’t develop a QB to save his life!

  9. ravenator says: Mar 25, 2012 12:05 PM

Gay truly represents the stupidity that is Steeler nation. Arizona is not the west coast, they just wish they were.

  10. idontliveinmymomsbasement says: Mar 25, 2012 12:12 PM

A former Steeler going to Arizona? That’s odd!!!

  11. johntonioholmes says: Mar 25, 2012 12:13 PM

Of course. He actually had a relatively decent season, though. He definitely had some bad games.

He got torched in man a few times too, but so did Nnamdi and Revis.

Overall, though, he was a one of the reasons why that pass defense was tops in the league.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s hardly better than average. But he made made plays to break up some important passes.

  12. jobotjones says: Mar 25, 2012 12:17 PM

The only sad part of this is that despite not being very good, Gay is the second best CB on our roster…

  13. Mr. Wright 212 says: Mar 25, 2012 12:24 PM

As a couple of people mentioned, couldn’t this also mean Seattle? Not that he matters or anything, you know, not being a good player and all.

  14. bigredjbird says: Mar 25, 2012 12:32 PM

Good sign for Az. Starting corners will still be Peterson, Jefferson and Toler (who played better than DRC in my opinion). Hopefully he can step in and replace Marshall.

  15. steelersdad says: Mar 25, 2012 12:33 PM

    he sucks anyway.

  16. expertop says: Mar 25, 2012 12:36 PM

My favorite William Gay moment was when Adrian Peterson knocked him over like a car hitting one of those orange traffic cones.

  17. steelcurtainn says: Mar 25, 2012 12:41 PM

Finally, I been waiting to here this news for years.

  18. suckmyhawk says: Mar 25, 2012 12:49 PM

Thank goodness his parents didn’t name him Richard.

  19. jacksaysfu says: Mar 25, 2012 12:54 PM

I think gay belongs in Arizona . Gay can be all over his man pretty good , but sometimes he can get burnt . But hey , the cards knew what they were getting when they got Gay . Arizona needs Gay to cover them deep balls , but Gay bites alot and teammates won’t like that

  20. 95glloyd says: Mar 25, 2012 1:00 PM

Looks like Lewis, Allen and the dude they drafted from Texas last year will be competing for the starting left corner and nickel positions and that’s not bad. I’d like to see CB Kirkpatrick from Alabama fall to 24 in the draft, though.

  21. jprcox says: Mar 25, 2012 1:04 PM

I read that as he is gong to Seattle – what are you guys talking about Arizona for?? Last I checked they are not on the West “Coast”.

  22. yojoemama says: Mar 25, 2012 1:07 PM

Great news! Good bye and good riddance. This fool of a CB gave up big play after big play. Even I could complete a pass against him and I can’t throw the ball more than 20 yards.

  23. lincspop says: Mar 25, 2012 1:24 PM

type in #birdgang on twitter and the cardinals come up… for the seahawks its typically #seahawks, #12thman, or #chickenhawks. Mr. Gay may be confused on the westcoast aspect of it… We consider ourselves in the southwest here in AZ. But then again I think most of the country thinks we are actually in Mexico, so Ill take west coast as a step in the right direction.

Local guy here just confirmed that its a 2 year deal for Gay.

  24. slammer69 says: Mar 25, 2012 1:50 PM

    Bye!!!!!

  25. quittsburghstoolers says: Mar 25, 2012 2:04 PM

I guess that means there’s one less Gay in Pittsburgh.

I doubt it will be noticeable, though…

  26. upyoursnfu says: Mar 25, 2012 2:09 PM

    Ravenator,

Nobody said AZ was on the west COAST. However, AZ is in the Western part of the United States. I can see reading comprehension wasn’t your best subject in school. Maybe Geography wasn’t either.

  27. sasattack says: Mar 25, 2012 2:12 PM

Best news of day for Steeler Nation. I wish him the best though.

  28. prmartincek says: Mar 25, 2012 2:18 PM

As a Steelers fan, all I can say is Thank God.

    Gay sucked.

  29. pizzon says: Mar 25, 2012 2:19 PM

A lot of people have said that Gay was the Steelers 2nd best cover corner. lol pardon me but that should be more than enough of a reason to send him packing, sure he had his moments but overall the guy couldnt cover Tom Brady coming out of the backfield. I would rather take my chances with Keenan Lewis and let Whisenhunt have our leftover rejects.

  30. mexminoroty says: Mar 25, 2012 2:31 PM

Please take with you Taylor and Clark. Those 2 along with Gay are the worst set of corners and safety a team could have.

Gay played in 2011 better than all his seasons in Pittsburgh. The fact that Ryan Mundy and Keenan Lewis were playing with him along with Polamalu gave another dimension and level to the Steelers secondary.

For some reason when Clark and Taylor were in, he looked bad and the Steeler secondary was really bad.

GET RID OF TAYLOR AND CLARK, THOSE ARE USELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. polamalufan57 says: Mar 25, 2012 2:53 PM

Best move by the Steelers this spring. lol

  32. scoob766 says: Mar 25, 2012 3:16 PM

Cut polamalu too, he’s been horrible in the playoffs and SB. He gives up too many plays, send him to the raiders for a 1st rounder.

  33. agc99 says: Mar 25, 2012 3:20 PM

    Addition by subtraction. He SUCKS!!!

  34. ravenator says: Mar 25, 2012 3:30 PM

    @upyoursnfu

Look in the mirror. Another steeler fan who can’t read. Gay, said AZ was on the west coast. Wow, drink less beer, seriously.

  35. woski767 says: Mar 25, 2012 4:21 PM

Oh, look ravenator is trolling yet another Steelers article. I think he’s a closet Steeler fan.

    ravenator-

No where did William Gay say “Arizona is on the West Coast.”

He simply Twatted that he was going to AZ and that, in the hip-hop world, generally means “West Coast” versus “East Coast”.

But you, craventator, are so desperate to try to insult anything related to the Steelers that you display willful ignorance and wanton dipshattery.

Please- wait until you win more than a couple playoff games before you try to insult a superior football program, team, and fanbase.

But i bet you look pretty in purple :-)!

It’s not Pittsburgh West Coast” it’s “Pittsburgh West”. And if you could read a map, Arizona actually is west of Pittsburgh.

Sheesh! If you guys have to hate…at least hate with a little intelligence!

  39. cup1981 says: Mar 25, 2012 5:57 PM

All of Steeler Nation just breathed a sigh of relief and Tweeted offers to pack Will’s bags for him. Good luck with your passing D, Card fans. This guy’s gonna make you pull your hair out.

I assume this means one of the two DBs they drafted last year is ready to step in, likely Curtis Brown. Ike Teezy needs some help on that other side, then maybe he can get a little over-the-top help once in a while.

  40. ravenator says: Mar 25, 2012 6:38 PM

Still bitter from that 92 yard drive.

  41. steelcurtainn says: Mar 25, 2012 11:36 PM

zoidenflak that was great….lol…….no come back for that one…..

  42. hsbox27 says: Mar 26, 2012 12:19 AM

Still living off that 2000 SB and all those reg season SB’s you Gayvens keep “winning”. Somebody wake me when the gayvens actually do something in a SB this decade or the next 5. Shhh little birdie shhhhhhhhhhhh.

  43. dwoofer says: Mar 26, 2012 11:45 AM

WOW !!! This Arizona free-agency off-season is so stupendous, it’s making my head spin !! What activity !! What strategy !! Re-sign Feely; re-sign Levi Brown; whiff on Manning; re-sign Doucet; start Kolb over Skelton and re-create the wonders of 2011.
Yes, Cards fans, adding Gay is the icing on this Bidwill Super Bowl cake!

  44. sixburghsteelers says: Apr 1, 2012 7:28 AM

    This is AWESOME news!!!!

Now PLEASE draft a decent CB…pretty please!
