it might look like the browns lost out but i would call it a win. both garcon and morgan got bloated contracts and wont play near their expected level.

Browns are smart for not overpaying for FA. That’s not how you build a winner.

Really? I thought you had to get good players to be a winner. You can do this via draft or free agency. The skins were guilty of obtaining older players who were on the down side of their careers. Also they were selecting players who based their careers on the Big Contract.

Look at the stats. Garcon played like a number 1 receiver last year, even with the scrubbs throwing to him. The skins could have gambled as the Browns did and low-balled Garcon. Would that be smart when you know you’ll need weapons for your new franchise qb.

By the way, the skins are building through the draft also- see 2010 and 2011.

So any decision, no matter how desperate or reckless is justified by the fact that you “take chances?”

Sounds like the guy who takes his paycheck to the casino to try to double his money. It may work once in awhile, but is not a sound strategy for retirement.

Horrible logic, and so far has not worked out well for the Skins (see Haynesworth).

I’ll take the steady, managed approach any day.

The Clowns just seem to not want to win. They Had Hillis but wouldn’t pay him last year and lost him. They had the same chance at FA players as everyone else but won’t pay. I wonder what their going to do when they have to meet the mandatory cap spending. Maybe pull Sapp out of retirement:-)

Why is this even news? The Browns have said the last two years they will build through the draft. They made an offer in case it worked out and you admit in the last paragraph that it may not have been a serious pursuit. You’re really stretching for story lines.

I might, and I stress might, be upset over not getting Josh Morgan at $7.5 million for 2 seasons. But the Redskins waaaay overpaid for Garcon and only time will tell if the RGIII deal was good or not. Let’s face it – at best, RGIII has a 50/50 chance of panning out to be a serviceable NFL QB. That’s a lot of your team’s future to gamble on one player.

As a Browns fan, I’m tempted to just say f*** it, let’s just understand right now up front that this year is not going to be a winner.

And let’s add Mo Claiborne and big time OLB to round out what’s already a top 10 defense.

Leave the offense to next year, and hope that McCoy and Little grow into some kind of chemistry.

We’ve lost so many offseason battles so far, it’s hard to stay optimistic about anything other than the D.

Why is it no matter what move the Skins make those who are not fans never think its a good move…Everyone has pretty much stated RGIII is a can’t miss and possibly and better prospect than Luck, but yet the haters still say the Skins will be no good, but yet if some other team had made these same moves they would be getting good responses to these moves…

As a Browns fan, I generally agree that the team is wise to not overpay for free agents, but at the same time, just look at our receiving corps. It’s probably the worst in the league. It needs help, and if that means overpaying a guy now and then, maybe they ought to consider it, especially since the alternative is to stick with a receiving corps comprised of Larry, Curly and Moe.

I’m so shocked that the Bengals didn’t even pursue any wideout to play across from AJ Green. Garcon would have been great playing across Green. And they have so much cap space they could have signed so many different targets.

But no, GM barely does anything in FA and says he’s “jacked”

The Browns haven’t signed any other free agent wide receivers since missing out on Garcon and Morgan, leaving them with Greg Little, Josh Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi as their top three wideouts.

redskins way overpaid for both those receivers so the browns probably did themselves a favor by not getting into a bidding war…i’m not sure they pass on richardson when they draft as he looks like he’ll be the next adrian peterson and they need a big time running back to replace hillis

You don’t ever need big name offensive skills players. You can coach to a precise offense.

Defense is another story, but offense doesnt require blue chippers. Just precise execution.
