Sanchez welcomes Tebow: “I’m not worried about losing my spot”

tim-tebow-mark-sanchez-jets Getty Images

On the day that Tim Tebow was formally introduced as his backup before a huge media contingent, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez said he isn’t concerned about Tebow pushing him out of the No. 1 spot on the depth chart.

“I’m not worried about losing my spot,” Sanchez told Rod Boone of Newsday. “Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan have been firm on that, that I’m the starter.”

Of course, seven months ago John Elway and John Fox were stating firmly that Kyle Orton was the starter in Denver, and Tebow was the backup. When you’re a starting quarterback with a high-profile backup, it doesn’t matter how many times you’re told you’re the starter. The starting job can be taken away from you at any time.

But Sanchez says he’s glad Tebow is his teammate.

“I think guys will welcome him,” Sanchez said. “I’ll definitely welcome him.”

A lot of people are welcoming Tebow to New York right now. Not all of them believe they’re welcoming a backup.

he should be worried, tebow is more popular than sanchez is in ny already!!!

  2. dv5454 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:02 PM

No need to be worried about something that is already lost.

Teams only hold press conferences for players who play, and coaches who coach. Last time I checked, Tebow is on the active 45.

    SI ya Sanchez

  4. fitzmagic1212 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:03 PM

well you’re losing at least 33% of your teams offensive snaps..say what you want but your days are numbered mark.

Translation: I still got paid and I’m banging Kate Upton. I win.

And we all know NFL executives/coaches never lie…….

You know that feeling, when you’re all alone, and the hair stands up on the back your neck?

    IT’S TEBOW

  7. InFact says: Mar 26, 2012 6:04 PM

Can you spell N-A-I-V-E, Mr. Sanchez?

When my wife saw the new hot secretary I hired, do you think she said “I’ll definitely welcome her.”

  8. bucforever says: Mar 26, 2012 6:05 PM

Seems simple to me. As long as the Jets are winning Sanchez will be the starter. When they start a losing streak af say 3 games look for the fans to start hollering for TEBOW !

  9. snikerbotloot says: Mar 26, 2012 6:06 PM

Brilliant move by the NYJ to bring in Tebow. Sanchez needs to step it up this year, bottom line.

  12. andrejohnsonforpresident says: Mar 26, 2012 6:07 PM

Sanchez has competition for Mark Brunells daughter. Let’s get this team back on Hard Knocks.

  13. chawk12thman says: Mar 26, 2012 6:07 PM

What; no press conference for this announcement?

  14. ebbycalvinlaloosh says: Mar 26, 2012 6:08 PM

As bad as Sanchez is at times, he is still much, much better than Tebow. Jets’ fans will see it soon enough. Not only does Tebow have HUGE accuracy issues, he also appears incapable of reading defenses and mentally processing more than one pass route on any given play. I don’t believe he has the mental capacity to improve in these areas. And no, this isn’t Merrill Hoge.

So if you’re hoping for a QB to rescue you from the Mark Sanchez era, you are looking in the wrong direction.

  15. mendenhallfumblemachine says: Mar 26, 2012 6:08 PM

    Yeah sure.

  16. jenniferxxx says: Mar 26, 2012 6:08 PM

  17. zlmillerkazz says: Mar 26, 2012 6:10 PM

Two terribly mediocre 1st round QB’s battling it out on the same team in New York. Awesome.

    - So done with the Tebow coverage, it’ll be a good day when he is irrelevant in the NFL.

  18. gmen4trophies says: Mar 26, 2012 6:10 PM

  21. shinook777 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:13 PM

Sanchez will lose his girlfriend, job and future to Tim Tebow!

Tebow is much better than Sanchez.

I got a Sanchez jersey as a gift, who wants it? Otherwise, I will give it to my dog.

Can’t wait to get my NIKE Tebow jersey!

  22. thereisalwaysnextyear says: Mar 26, 2012 6:14 PM

“I’m not worried about losing my spot”

and THAT is the problem you moron(sanchez)! The BEST practice and play like they’re scared to death of losing their spot. No one owes you anything except your momma. The more Sanchez opens his mouth the more convinced I am that he’s just not going to cut it. He’s got a questionable arm(at best) down field, just like Lienhart) and all he does is talk about how secure his job is. As an anti-rex ryan guy this is going to be fun to watch.

  23. sportsmediacritic says: Mar 26, 2012 6:14 PM

Tebow to NY is going to be a fiasco of epic proportions. I thought with the retirement of Favre, no one person would monopolize sports media ink. I was wrong.

And one month ago, John Elway and John Fox were stating firmly that Tim Tebow was the starter in Denver.

  28. rodgers419 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:18 PM

The Jets are going to have a quarterback problem regardless of who starts between Sanchez and Tebow. They’re both liabilities. It’s kind of like Montanna vs Young, except with garbage QB’s.

  29. pfii63 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:18 PM

First he pointed to his contract extension as proof he is a leader.

Now he is pointing at Tannenbaum and Ryan as proof that he is the starter.

You know, because coaches and general managers have never changed their minds before.

This guy REALLY IS that clueless.

  30. jakek2 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:19 PM

This trade will set the Jets back another 10 years. Dumb, dumb trade by a bumbling organization.

  31. 808raiderinparadise says: Mar 26, 2012 6:20 PM

Until the crowd starst chanting …

“Teeee bow!, Teee bow!” after your 3 of 12 with 2 picks and a fumble.

Then Tebow will come in and go 5 0f 17 a pick and 32 rushing yards and somehow win when the other teams fumbles a snap while tyring to center a game winning field goal.

At least Marion Barber retired, he can’t fumble for Tebow anymore.

  32. IainRWB says: Mar 26, 2012 6:20 PM

    a GREAT QB would say:

“Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan have been firm on that, that the best player will be the starter.”

  38. rdrs68 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:22 PM

Maybe Rex brought in the underwear model to divert attention away from toe sucking and big mouth disease. Woody may have told Rex to tone it down but you still have to feed the beast and Timmy Turnover fits the bill.

  39. thereisalwaysnextyear says: Mar 26, 2012 6:22 PM

  40. peytonsneck18 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:23 PM

ive never seen a press conference for any back up #2 on depth chart QB, EVER!!!, i would be worried mr Sanchez

  41. vondoom92 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:23 PM

He shouldnt be worried about Tebow TAKING the job, he should be worried about LOSING it. Him and Tebow both are probably around 42% in the accruacy dept

  42. lostsok says: Mar 26, 2012 6:24 PM

    He should be worried.

They Jets just got two 6ths and two 7ths in the compensatory picks. They could draft four QBs with those picks and EVERY ONE of them would probably be better than Sanchez (and Tebow!).

  43. ampats says: Mar 26, 2012 6:25 PM

And everyone knows that Mark Sanchez is the leader of the ringless circus called the Jets as his contract extension shows (according to Mark).

The sad part is the only true QB on that roster is Greg McElroy.

35 minute press conference for a back up QB, only the Jets.

Tebow was heard saying that he heard the anniversary celebration for the past 43 years is cool and he is looking forward to becoming part of the annual event.

  44. bucks12965 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:27 PM

Seems like much of his problems stem from him not worrying about a whole lot.

  45. brutus9448 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:27 PM

well he’ll be the most expensive backup in the nfl soon enough. Tim Tebow is ryan’s kinda QB and sparano is ryan’s type of OC.
Just get 3 points and don’t lose the game.

  46. zinn22 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:29 PM

Sanchez should be celebrating that Tebow is the back-up. Tebow is one of the few QBs even worse than Sanchez.

Ryan has said they plan to use Tebow on about 20% of the snaps. This will mean defenses will be forced to prepare for Tebow and Sanchez possibly making it easier on Sanchez.

Either way its a pretty terrible looking QB depth chart.

  47. tone360 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:31 PM

  48. theghostofjackkentcooke says: Mar 26, 2012 6:31 PM

    and your point is…?

  56. j0esixpack says: Mar 26, 2012 6:43 PM

Rex Ryan was firm about Sanchez as the starter?

He was also firm about guaranteeing two Super Bowls… and right after he was “firm” about Sanchez as the starter he tried to court Manning… and probably not as a backup.

I’d have to think that Rex Ryan may have a bit of a credibility problem with his players these days.

  57. bullcharger says: Mar 26, 2012 6:47 PM

Even Peyton would be worried if Tebow had stayed in Denver. That’s why part of the deal was to ship him out. You don’t what the most popular player in the game as your back-up.

  58. randygnyc says: Mar 26, 2012 6:52 PM

Lmao @ Sanchez. You’ve ALREADY lost your job. You’ve been listening to too many yes men, Mark. They’re the only ones who believe in you. Your coaches and fans have already abandoned you. You’re all alone. This is Tim’s team, now.

  59. nepo784 says: Mar 26, 2012 6:58 PM

  60. andyreiddoublecheeseburger says: Mar 26, 2012 7:01 PM

  68. rams1999 says: Mar 26, 2012 7:29 PM

About time the Jets realize that Sanchez straight out sucks and has been at best 4th round QB even before the Jets drafted him in 1st round. One of the most over rated to come out of college. The USC QB title is what got him drafted at all if anything. Even John Booty would be a better starting QB.

  69. gdeli says: Mar 26, 2012 7:32 PM

I don’t believe he has the mental capacity to improve in these areas. And no, this isn’t Merrill Hoge.

    ————————————————————-

I am not sure hwo this is any different than Sanchez. Except Sanchez is additionally immobile with horrible pocket presence and collapses under pressure. The difference is Tebow is even more inaccurate than Sanchez but Tebow offers something positive in that he can scramble and run with the ball.

Most likely Tebow will be a bit better than he was in Denver and Sanchez will still be terrible regardless. Neither QB should be playing in the NFL except Tebow in the Wildcat.

Both of these QBs just make me a bigger fan of McElroy.

  74. rangenius says: Mar 26, 2012 8:08 PM

Peyton was dissed for Andrew Luck. Tebow was dissed for Peyton Manning. But everyone is crying for Sanchez. WTF

  75. buffalo110 says: Mar 26, 2012 8:15 PM

I don’t get Sanchez, or anyone like him. It is a team sport and HE isn’t worried about HIS spot? What about the team winning? What about the team doing well? What about trying to improve, which he hasn’t done since he has been there? Sanchez needs this more than he knows. A little dose of reality and forced work ethic might make him into the QB his salary says he should be. Just a thought.

  76. dellis07 says: Mar 26, 2012 8:37 PM

  77. voiceofsweetness says: Mar 26, 2012 8:45 PM

Sanchez’s only shot to be full time starter on this team may be to get Tebow laid.

  78. whatswiththehate says: Mar 26, 2012 8:51 PM

Actually, judging by the many sports sites, I’ve read, outside of other team fans, many folks including those in the media don’t feel what the Jets did was a smart move.

Yeah, go get a QB who is way more inaccurate and incapable of reading defense than the one you already have because he’s made popular thanks to the media and his rabid fans, makes a lot of sense. Sanches may be bad but Tebow is worst. Let’s not kid ourselves.

This Jet fan would have preferred and respected a QB who was a shade better than Sanchez but instead we got one 3 shades worst and is treate like a rock star for everything else but his talent on the field.

Can we say bad PR move. Sanchez’s job should be safe no matter what the media and folks at PFT(Petty For Tebow) have to say.

Here’s a little something from a Raiders fan living in Denver: I was in hell. Not anymore.

I somehow survived the absolute nonsense that was Tebowmania. Literally & figuratively two types of fans existed here: there were the Broncos fans, who know their football and I respect. Besides, they buy me beers when I show up in my Lyle Alzado jersey (the Raiders one) to the one Raiders game I hit every year and we talk the usual smack, but all in all I have fun with those folks. Then, we had Tebowfreakinmaniacs: the ones that know nada about football and worship the tissue he used to blow his schnoz.

The Tebowmaniacs have mysteriously disappeared along with the out-of-control media calliope (that’s broken and a tad out of tune btw) here locally anyway. I think Greyhound is running a special from Denver to out East – I don’t know. All I know is peace has returned to the valley and I see a lot of Denver Tebow jerseys at garage sales these days – dirt cheap.

I’ve only been to New York once way back in the 80s – I’ll always remember the visit. Great city, great people. I really don’t wish what’s about to happen to the fine folks of NY/NJ, but sadly it will. Your media is flat out brutal, and at times it’s humorous. And they will play this whole Tebow nonsense to no end until ears bleed and flat screens are being tossed out of 5th story apartments. It’s only just started people, and it only gets crazier from here.

  90. sliverandhack says: Mar 27, 2012 2:58 AM

  91. cluelessdufus says: Mar 27, 2012 4:28 AM

  93. ltjgmn says: Mar 30, 2012 11:16 PM

I love the Raider fan who thinks Tebow sucks. All Teens did against the Raiders this past season is dismantle them, , passing for 2 TD’s (including a 60 yarder) and rushing for 117 yards. The year before, in his first start, he burned them on a 50 yard TD run!

    Priceless.

  94. ltjgmn says: Mar 30, 2012 11:22 PM

Lol, I meant “Teebs”. In any case, Tebow is the best thing to come down the pike in a long time. He and Cam Newton are going to redefine the QB position.
