On the day that Tim Tebow was formally introduced as his backup before a huge media contingent, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez said he isn’t concerned about Tebow pushing him out of the No. 1 spot on the depth chart.
“I’m not worried about losing my spot,” Sanchez told Rod Boone of Newsday. “Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan have been firm on that, that I’m the starter.”
Of course, seven months ago John Elway and John Fox were stating firmly that Kyle Orton was the starter in Denver, and Tebow was the backup. When you’re a starting quarterback with a high-profile backup, it doesn’t matter how many times you’re told you’re the starter. The starting job can be taken away from you at any time.
But Sanchez says he’s glad Tebow is his teammate.
“I think guys will welcome him,” Sanchez said. “I’ll definitely welcome him.”
A lot of people are welcoming Tebow to New York right now. Not all of them believe they’re welcoming a backup.
