Zack Bowman signs with Vikings

Bears cornerback Bowman is charged with holding against Packers wide receiver Jones in the second half during their NFL football game in Green Bay Reuters

The Vikings have been looking for help at cornerback since the start of free agency and they’ve finally landed someone at the position.

As it turns out, they didn’t have to look that far. ESPNChicago.com reports that the Vikings have signed Zack Bowman away from their NFC North rivals at Soldier Field. Per the report, it is a one-year deal.

Bowman isn’t likely to stop the drumbeat for help at corner in the Twin Cities. Bowman had a decent 2009 season as a starter for Chicago, but lost his starting job early in 2010 and never recovered it. Even with Chris Cook returning, the Vikings have enough needs at corner that Bowman will have a chance to win significant playing time, but he’s hardly the kind of no-doubt starter that many Vikings fans likely wanted to see the team acquire this offseason.

Those wishes aren’t going to come to fruition. General manager Rick Spielman made it clear this weekend that the Vikings aren’t looking for blockbusters via free agency. Useful players like Bowman who may have more upside than salary are the order of the day in Minnesota.

Spielman and his build for the future rhetoric keeps signing 1 yr deals. Wonder if the Wilf’s are going to try and sell the team since the idiot legislature in MN won ‘t approve a stadium.

If he’s ever been a starter on an NFL defense, it’s an upgrade.

I just hope this means the whole Claiborne smoke-and-mirrors thing is coming to a close and they are going to just do the right thing™ and draft Kalil.

Not a huge signing but i think he will work well with our defense.

Philly wants to trade Samuel, get him and the Vikes will have quality and depth. Something they had neither of in 2011

You read my mind vikesfansteve. If one or two of Spielman’s signings actually play at a high level, it’s going to cost the team more money to lock these guys into long term deals.

He was a quality nickel corner for the bears and will defiantly help! Hopefully melvin bullit comes in the fold at some point? Who wants to bet Speilman takes safety Harrison smith outta Notre Dame in the 2nd. “I’ll bet my house” skol baby

in bowman’s final audition for the bears last year, he promptly gave up three touchdowns.

looks like tarzan, plays like jane.

Let’s go after Yeremia Bell from Miami and then go get Kalil and wide outs in the 2nd and 3rd rounds in the draft – PLEASE!!

Just think about the Vikings opening day starting lineup once…

textexington, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I’ve thought that as well, but I honestly think that the “idiot legislature” will be voted out this fall and the environment will be more favorable to getting a deal done, and that’s what the Vikes are holding on to.

So with that in mind, I think Spielman is just temporarily filling in gaps while he tries to pull a GB and build almost entirely through the draft.

Mimicking PA and plagiarizing lines from movies is all you vikequeef toads are capable of. None of you are capable of an original thought. Did your boyfriend have to type it for you?

Is this the best Spielman can do? It sure looks like it. For a team trying desperately to land a new stadium, they certainly don’t appear very anxious to field a quality football team.

The Vikings are in dire need of an upgrade in the secondary. While Bowman may add something, it won’t be enough to crack the starting lineup with a secondary that is already sub-par. Meanwhile, we still don’t have one safety on this team worthy of being on an NFL roster, let alone starting. And what has Spielman done about? Nothing!

You know, you can actually find quality in free agency if you look hard enough. The Vikings did that a few years back with Antoine Winfield and Pat Williams. Big name, big money signings that contributed a great deal to the team’s success. Good GMs know this. Spielman apparently doesn’t.

As a Vikings fan, I am thrilled we have not over spent in free agency. No need to by a few big name players that won’t get us in the playoffs anyway. We are much better off building through the draft and bringing back EJ for one more year. The stadium deal will happen, it’s just a matter of time.

As. A Vikings fan in the know , the team is 80% gone. Saddens me to say it, but that is fact!

That is a good deal. These are type of moves that make you a better football team.

Sweet, now Brandon Marshall can make him look like a high schooler in the regular season, just like how he made Bowman look in the Pro Bowl. Hahahahaha

Oh, okay. Thanks for letting us in on that. How exactly are you “in the know”? Just this morning, the Minneapolis city council announced they have a majority supporting the stadium and a recent poll showed that 61% of the state approves of the proposed deal. Those are facts too.

Wow, Bowman was in the Pro Bowl? This guy is better than I thought!

  23. jamesnieman says: Mar 26, 2012 2:52 PM

I keep hearing about how bad the Vikings suck and no point in spending BIG$ on free agents Bc their is no shot at playoffs, u people are either ignorant Viking haters or just don’t watch many Viking games. The Vikings did go 3-13 but they did loose 9 games by 7 points or less and 1 game by 10 points, they were not as bad as their record implies (not saying they were good either) with a little help on defenestration’s and a little help on offense and they could have a shot ( key word shot) at they playoffs.

Cook, Carr, Bowman at CB and Winfield, Abdullah at Saftey and the secondary is better than last decade

Kalil, Johnson, Sullivan, Schwartz, Loadholt is a better line than last season

If they can get some one like A Jefferies in the 2nd round they would have a decent WR corps.

Not saying all that would happen but its possible!!!

Yeah pro bowler as a “special teams” guy, NOT for his defensive back skills that Marshall exposed. So that’s all you Vikes fans got is a special teams guy.

Bowman lost his job mid last season becuase of getting fool on plays besides his 2009 season he hasn’t done much if he proves he can start i see a bright future between these two.And this is coming from a vikings fan

First, special teams are a big part of the game. Signing a Pro Bowl special teams player would be a great acquisition. Unfortunately, Zack Bowman never made the Pro Bowl. Maybe you’re thinking of Corey Graham?
