Cowboys at Giants on NBC to open 2012 NFL season

Dallas Cowboys v New York Giants Getty Images

The first game of the 2012 NFL regular season will be the same matchup as the last game of the 2011 NFL regular season: Cowboys at Giants.

The NFL announced today that the Giants, in the traditional role of the Super Bowl champions, will host the first game of the season at MetLife Stadium, and they’ll do it against the Cowboys on Wednesday, September 5, on NBC.

It’s the third consecutive Cowboys-Giants game to air on NBC in prime time; both of last season’s games between the two NFC East rivals were also NBC Sunday night games.

It’s the ninth consecutive year that the defending Super Bowl champions have hosted the regular-season opener, with the Super Bowl winners going 8-0 so far. It’s also the first time that the game has been on a Wednesday, as the game was moved a day earlier this year to accommodate President Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.

As a Giant’s fan, I’m a bit disappointed. I thought a Packers match up would have been the better game. Then again…I wouldn’t mind seeing Jurrah’s no me gusta face again to start off the season.

No you won’t. Don’t even lie. You will watch every second of the game and will pray that your nemesis beat the Giants to give your overhyped, soon-to-be bust QB, a prayer at, laugh…winning the division.

  29. rockthered1286 says: Mar 27, 2012 4:08 PM

NFC East matchup, and yet there will still be about 50 Tebow references throughout the game since they’ll be in NY.

  30. jason1980 says: Mar 27, 2012 4:08 PM

  34. sterilizecromartie says: Mar 27, 2012 4:12 PM

I’m so tired of seeing NFC East games on prime time. Giants-Packers would have been much better.

  35. jakek2 says: Mar 27, 2012 4:12 PM

Being in the presence of the Lombardi on September 5 is as close as the Cowboys will ever get to it again.

  36. mcjon22 says: Mar 27, 2012 4:13 PM

YAWN! Packers or Saints would of been much more interesting then 2 teams that play twice a year, every year.

  37. bhindenemylines says: Mar 27, 2012 4:14 PM

Awesome. What’s the over/under on how many of Eli’s passes Carr picks off in his Cowboys’ debut?

The Cowboys have gotten better this offseason with a few good signings (Oline, FB, CB) while the Giants have lost several key offensive players.

    Should be an interesting/good game.

  38. mvp43 says: Mar 27, 2012 4:14 PM

Thought for sure it would be Packers/ Giants. Typically the NFL doesn’t schedule division rivals as the opening game.

  39. drunkenjunk says: Mar 27, 2012 4:14 PM

Can’t wait for Romo to choke on primetime again. This is gonna suck, I can’t wait to be up by 12 in the 4th quarter and watch it all go away again. (sarcasm)

  40. londonbengal says: Mar 27, 2012 4:14 PM

Any idea why the Cowboys are on prime time tv at all this season ?

Mediocre team, mediocre season. Giants v Packers, yes; Giants v Saints, yes; Giants v niners yes; but Giants v Cowboys ??????

It must be to shut Jones up and avoid embarrassing litigation with the salary cap mess.

  41. sdelmonte says: Mar 27, 2012 4:15 PM

  45. cooklynn17 says: Mar 27, 2012 4:17 PM

It’s all good, the NFL and NBC both know this game is one if the better games for week one. And this leaves the Steelers, Packers, and Niners among other teams the NY Giants play to appear in other prime time slots throughout the rest of the season.

Let’s hear it Giant fans, thumbs up.

  46. largent80 says: Mar 27, 2012 4:19 PM

The Obama angle is just a smokescreen. The 2012 season kickoff is really being bumped up a day so that it does not conflict with the Madonna concert at Yankee Stadium. I’m guessing Rog is a huge Material Girl fan and just doesn’t want to admit it. :)

It feels like the media spends more time on the NFC East and half of the AFC East than the rest of the NFL divisions combined. I am so sick of hearing about the Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, and Redskins.

When they aren’t talking about the NFC East, the media is talking about the Jets and some about the Patriots. I would rather watch the Bengals and Chiefs on national tv because they are not completely overexposed.

I’d pretty much have to say I loathe the NYG and I’m no particular fan of DAL either, however I can pretty much guarantee I’ll have one a yard long to see FOOTBALL WITH A FOOTBALL ON A FOOTBALL FIELD, Sept. 5

They got to pick from any of their divisional opponents and the teams they were scheduled to host this season (Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, New Orleans and Cleveland). “Giants are the worst team in history to win a SB”

Well you can Thank the NFL for parity (which is really an effort to give all you sucky organizations a chance to compete).
Otherwise The great Teams would dominate…Ohh that’s right the Great teams still dominate and win Super Bowls, LMAO!

Eagles vs. Giants would have been better. The Eagles would have at least given them a challenge after all the Eagles have beaten the Giants five straight times in the Meadowlands.

This comment is priceless! Another Eagles fan that thinks they hand out Lombardi Trophies for regular season wins.

As a Packer fan, I would’ve loved to play the Giants on Opening Day. I have enough respect for the Giants to not predict anything, but it would have been fun (we play them later anyway.)

Now, having said that, as a Cowboys hater, I would like to see the Gaints kick their butts and get them off to a very slow start.

  115. ronin36 says: Mar 27, 2012 5:49 PM

    I smell political pay-off.

“Jerry, we’ll let you open on prime-time, if you don’t shut up about the whole salary cap thing. Sorry Daniel Snyder. We could only bribe one team, but we’ll give you a Thursday game down the road. That should help your falling revenue streams.. right?”

  116. ronin36 says: Mar 27, 2012 5:51 PM

    Dang..

    Mistyped. Should have read as…

“Jerry, we’ll let you be part of the season opener if you keep quiet about the whole salary cap thing.”

Given the fact that the SB winner is 12-0 in Week 1 since 2000, including 9-0 since the NFL began the seasons this way in 2004, and Uncle Tony’s Week 1 game last season in MetLife was a classic Romo game (great stats and killer mistakes that gave the opposing team the W Cowboys fans choose to ignore in lieu of his stats), it should be a good start!

Why is it that the NY Giants are the only Super Bowl Champion to have a division game in the kickoff sacrificial offering game? Every other champion has had a non-division game, but Goodell’s best buddy Mara gets the added advantage of a gimmie division game. At least it isn’t my Redskins this time. Tell me, is my anger misplaced?

I guess I’m not gonna see any Dallas love on this thread… Dallas wins, 28-14, with 1 defensive TD. Eli is injured in the 3rd quarter and out 4 weeks. John Mara is taking his tie off in preparation of a jones family beat down, and Brandon Jacobs is in a hall somewhere banging his head on a wall repeating “NO, No, No,No etc..” and Victor Cruz suddenly shows what he really is.. Overhyped.

Two players have admitted to it?

    Crickets from the NFL…….

Really, what a dumb statement, Giants weren’t trying to hurt anyone. If anyone was trying to someone, it was the 9ers trying to knock Eli out of the game. Typical 9ers fan crying as usual, wah, wah.

I’m so sick of the media saying the giants have “class”…they compare them to those bumbling fools on the other side of town…both Mara and Tichsh are jokes and always open their ridiculous mouths with idiot comments…giants ARE the worst team to win a SB…no question about it…do ppl watch these games or pay attention? Romo’s hand was basically broken, the Falcons were not a playoff team, the Philbins son died and was a complete distraction for GB, 49ers had that joke muff the punt while Ginn was injured…Bradshaw did fumble, etc…give us a break Little Giant Fans…the have the Pats number and were lucky to play them in both SBs, seriously….everything fell the giants way. Btw one more thing, if the saints beat the 49ers the little giants had NO SHOT….

Great were all in for another season of Dallas Cowboy Football and their 8 nationally televised games. They are the best team not to win anything in a decade. Can’t wait for the half a dozen shot of Jerry Jones in his box. What football fan would want to miss that!!

If you really think about Eagles vs Giants games have been most entertaining games inside of the division. Both of these teams have tons of moments that define an season when they play each other. Plus both teams fight for the division title. As an eagles fan, i thought the first game last year in philly was giants turning point and showcase Victor Cruz inwhich created a national story that no one knew about and turned him into a star. As for the Cowboys, they find ways to embarrass themselves continuously every time they go on the national stage.

The “american’s team’ stick is over.

  141. blu4l1fe says: Mar 28, 2012 10:04 AM

I do like the predictions! Including the one’s from Eagles fans claiming a NY vs. Philly game would be better.

I think, historically, the Cowboys, or the Eagles for that matter, will probably take the game. Then, either miss the playoffs or make it and do a “one and done”.

Go ahead guys, claim the Lombardi trophy again, right even before a game is played. People never learn!!!

Yah, you and whoever team you root for have ALL the class. Wow, talk about casting stones!!! IF I had a penny for every time someone mentions the word IF (the saints beat the 49ers, the giants had NO SHOT…) I WOULD BE A MILLIONAIRE. Dude, stick to the fact, the GIANTS won, you and your team did NOT!!! ACCEPT it and LIVE with it. There is no second or third place in football just champions. Never in the history of the sport did the word “IF” make a damn difference to change who one or who lost.

You bring a new meaning to the term “SORE LOSER.” Hey, how about this, try basketball, maybe the Miami Heat?

When is the last time that the defending champs lost the opener? The NFL always selects an opponent that they can hype up for ratings, but also an easy win for the champs.
