Cowboys at Giants on NBC to open 2012 NFL season

The first game of the 2012 NFL regular season will be the same matchup as the last game of the 2011 NFL regular season: Cowboys at Giants.

The NFL announced today that the Giants, in the traditional role of the Super Bowl champions, will host the first game of the season at MetLife Stadium, and they’ll do it against the Cowboys on Wednesday, September 5, on NBC.

It’s the third consecutive Cowboys-Giants game to air on NBC in prime time; both of last season’s games between the two NFC East rivals were also NBC Sunday night games.

It’s the ninth consecutive year that the defending Super Bowl champions have hosted the regular-season opener, with the Super Bowl winners going 8-0 so far. It’s also the first time that the game has been on a Wednesday, as the game was moved a day earlier this year to accommodate President Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.

  1. Ahhh Romo in prime time. As always, he should just have his best game.

  2. As a Giant’s fan, I’m a bit disappointed. I thought a Packers match up would have been the better game. Then again…I wouldn’t mind seeing Jurrah’s no me gusta face again to start off the season.

  3. Nothing better than dusting off the Lombardi at home in front of Jerry and a few Cowboy fans!

  4. AWESOME!! Wrinkle head will be the sacrificial lamb for the Giants coronation game and will have his usual dumbstruck mug-on for the whole world to see!! Giants 1-0, Dallas 0-1 !

  5. Obama’s ratings would have been pummeled by this game or any NFL game, for that matter.

  6. I think moving the game for the convention speech is inappropriate.

This is NOT Obama making a speech to the nation as President- this a political candidate speaking to members of his own political party.

If this were the State of the Union Address or a speech to the nation addressing some issues affecting the country, it would be different.

But it’s not. It’s a campaign speech and it has no business bumping anything else off the schedule.

Given that Mara is trying to screw the Redskins I may just have to root for the Co…no, I can’t do it. I think I will watch something else that night.
    ————
No you won’t. Don’t even lie. You will watch every second of the game and will pray that your nemesis beat the Giants to give your overhyped, soon-to-be bust QB, a prayer at, laugh…winning the division.

  8. I wonder what Republican could have given a speech on opening night of the NFL and scored big rating? The Obama references, please!!!!

  9. Here I thought the league would want a competitive game. Giants are going to mop the floor with these guys.

  10. I’m so tired of seeing NFC East games on prime time. Giants-Packers would have been much better.

  11. Awesome. What’s the over/under on how many of Eli’s passes Carr picks off in his Cowboys’ debut?

The Cowboys have gotten better this offseason with a few good signings (Oline, FB, CB) while the Giants have lost several key offensive players.

    Should be an interesting/good game.

  12. Thought for sure it would be Packers/ Giants. Typically the NFL doesn’t schedule division rivals as the opening game.

  13. Can’t wait for Romo to choke on primetime again. This is gonna suck, I can’t wait to be up by 12 in the 4th quarter and watch it all go away again. (sarcasm)

  14. Any idea why the Cowboys are on prime time tv at all this season ?

Mediocre team, mediocre season. Giants v Packers, yes; Giants v Saints, yes; Giants v niners yes; but Giants v Cowboys ??????

It must be to shut Jones up and avoid embarrassing litigation with the salary cap mess.

  15. At least the Giants won’t have to play the Cowboys twice in four games at the end of the season.

I bet that the Eagles will get that honor.

Obama’s ratings would have been pummeled by this game or any NFL game, for that matter.

Any speech by any president would be pummeled by sports. One is exciting to watch, while for the other you can just read the highlights in tomorrow’s news (if you care at all).

  17. cowboys will own the giants… after all they are the regular season champs… you can bet them to win till late nov…

  18. Always politics…any of you malcontents realize that football would beat any politician opposite it: Dem or Rep. Which is actually a sad commentary on our society.

  19. It’s all good, the NFL and NBC both know this game is one if the better games for week one. And this leaves the Steelers, Packers, and Niners among other teams the NY Giants play to appear in other prime time slots throughout the rest of the season.

Let’s hear it Giant fans, thumbs up.

  20. The Obama angle is just a smokescreen. The 2012 season kickoff is really being bumped up a day so that it does not conflict with the Madonna concert at Yankee Stadium. I’m guessing Rog is a huge Material Girl fan and just doesn’t want to admit it. 🙂

  21. This goes over like a baby ruth floating in the punch bowl to us west of the Meadowlands.

  22. Snore… Boring… there was really no other team to put against the Giants for the first game of the year? come on NFL and NBC, guess going outside the box is too crazy for you. Just another worthless game on NBC. I’d rather watch Obama’s presser the next night.

  23. Great way for the Cowboys to kick of their Super Bowl run, this will be a big win over the Giants!

  24. It feels like the media spends more time on the NFC East and half of the AFC East than the rest of the NFL divisions combined. I am so sick of hearing about the Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, and Redskins.

When they aren’t talking about the NFC East, the media is talking about the Jets and some about the Patriots. I would rather watch the Bengals and Chiefs on national tv because they are not completely overexposed.

  25. Eagles vs. Giants would have been better. The Eagles would have at least given them a challenge after all the Eagles have beaten the Giants five straight times in the Meadowlands.

Way to put into words what the entire DMV is thinking. Thank you.

  27. If Giants and Cowboy fans can agree on one thing it would be they are happy Joe Buck isn’t calling the game

  28. Cowboys-Giants yet again. NBC thinks fans outside these two cities are dying to see it, but they don’t realize the NFC East is an overrated division. We’re sick of America’s Team. Eagles and Skins aren’t attractive either.

  29. Will TEBOW get a few snap somehow lol, he should get a few snaps for both teams in the NEW MEADOWLAND DUMP Built on the LANDFILL of New York TRASH!

  30. The Cowboys added a lot of tallent this offseason?!?! This could be bad for the Giants . . . let me . . . just check . . . yup Romo is still the QB. Same ol’ sucky Cowboys. You would think a team that got punked by the Giants as hard as the Cowboys did wouldn’t be thumping their chest so hard.

And you Cowboys fans should ask Eagles fans how winning the offseason worked for them last year.

  31. divisional games should only be played in the second half of the year and the last the 3-4 when they really matter.

the first game is a dumb time to have this.

  32. Bunch of whiners. I don’t care for either team but Cowboys/Giants is always close and a solid game on D and O.

  33. After the BS Mara pulled on the salary cap penalty, Jerry’s probably already put up a $50K bounty on Eli Manning.

I kid, Mr. Goodell, I kid.

  34. Brings back memories of how the Bucs got screwed and had to open the season after they won the superbowl, in phillys new stadium of all places. Luckily, same result as the nfc championship, both W’s… So we closed the vet and opened the linc in style. Man those were the days….

Really because all I remember was the league drooling when the Packers were 15-1 last year and you can’t blame the league for covering the NFC East so much those are some of the biggest markets in the US

  36. Nice to see that even @ PFT there is no escape from the life sucking force that is right wing political punditry. Even though it’s often said that professional sports are a microcosm of life, they are meant to be an escape for fans from the doldrums of day to day life. I’d pretty much have to say I loathe the NYG and I’m no particular fan of DAL either, however I can pretty much guarantee I’ll have one a yard long to see FOOTBALL WITH A FOOTBALL ON A FOOTBALL FIELD, Sept. 5

  37. as a giants fan, i could honestly say that id be excited for that first game of the season if it were the bucs vs the rams…its the beginning of FOOTBALL SEASON.

to all those saying that the game will be boring, that they wont watch it, yada, yada, yada…..you guys cant honestly be actual fans of the sport.

  38. c’mon man…. we want vengeance!
Giants whooped us at home and you’re telling us we have to wait ?!?!?!?
smh… c’mon goodell, Packers-Giants are tied at the hip, both teams eliminate each other and go on to win superbowls 42, 45 and 46

  39. They’re doing this to make Eli look like he should be a SB MVP.

Matched up against any of the other NFL starting QB’s be looks pretty weak.

  40. I’d rather watch the Vikqueens vs. the Brownies.. gets tiring listening to the same conversations about the Cowgirls and the Midgets. Jerry Jones this, Tom Coughlin that.. Eli and Romo yada yada yada… Puke.

  41. Nothing like an NFC East post to dredge out all the failures from flyover country. 1) Ratings rule and nobody cares about your cornfed team from central Misery, er Missouri. 2) Which division has the most Lombardis by a mile? That is why they are featured. Keep hating on where the money comes from. We’ll keep you from becoming a 3rd world country unto their own if our east coast dollars weren’t involved.

PS – you’ll all watch this game too and love it because you’re all drones.

  42. .
jerry jones is a 1%’er buying his way into the first game

the cowboys shouldnt be playing in this game

  43. Don’t you guys know the defending Super Bowl Champs have their choice of who they play in the season opener? They got to pick from any of their divisional opponents and the teams they were scheduled to host this season (Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, New Orleans and Cleveland). In the end it was their choice to open up the season with Dallas, It had nothing to do with NBC and the NFL pairing them up.

  44. As a Giants fan I rather we play the Eagles if it is going to be another NFC East team. I like other fans am sick and tired of Dallas. But I did get interested when the idiot media homers on espn once again picked Dallas. So here’s to beating Dallas.

  45. Seriously!! We have to suffer through the most over hyped division in sports… Wast coast media bs!!! The first game shld always be afc vs nfc… Id rather watch browns vs she-hawks

    Cowboys 24 Giants 21

    ……and then you woke up

  47. The Cowboys!? Really? They are an average team at best. Who wants to watch that garbage matchup besides cowboy fans? Even the giants fans would rather watch a better first game than that.

  48. Cool. Another chance to see the most over-rated QB in recent memory do yet ANOTHER 4th quarter collapse! Here comes another 8-8 season in Jerry World!

HAS ANYONE AT THE NFL BEEN INFORMED THAT THIS LOSER FRANCHISE HAS WON 1 SINGLE PLAYOFF GAME IN THE LAST 16 YEARS?????????? ANYONE?????????????

  52. Wednesday opener…. because of politics????? The league should have went head to head against the politicians and see who would win the ratings war!

  53. With what Mara is doing to the Skins & Cowboys salary cap, the NYG will be lucky to win a game against either team.

The Skins already swept them last year. Keep it up.

    NFC>AFC

Well you can Thank the NFL for parity (which is really an effort to give all you sucky organizations a chance to compete).

  58. As a Packer fan, I would’ve loved to play the Giants on Opening Day. I have enough respect for the Giants to not predict anything, but it would have been fun (we play them later anyway.)

Now, having said that, as a Cowboys hater, I would like to see the Gaints kick their butts and get them off to a very slow start.

  59. I smell political pay-off.

“Jerry, we’ll let you open on prime-time, if you don’t shut up about the whole salary cap thing. Sorry Daniel Snyder. We could only bribe one team, but we’ll give you a Thursday game down the road. That should help your falling revenue streams.. right?”

  60. Dang..

    Mistyped. Should have read as…

“Jerry, we’ll let you be part of the season opener if you keep quiet about the whole salary cap thing.”

  61. Given the fact that the SB winner is 12-0 in Week 1 since 2000, including 9-0 since the NFL began the seasons this way in 2004, and Uncle Tony’s Week 1 game last season in MetLife was a classic Romo game (great stats and killer mistakes that gave the opposing team the W Cowboys fans choose to ignore in lieu of his stats), it should be a good start!

  62. Oh, so they chose the weaker link? Whatever, that’s BS, that’s not how it works pal. But then, who wouldn’t want to play the Cowboys, that’s a win-win.

  63. Why is it that the NY Giants are the only Super Bowl Champion to have a division game in the kickoff sacrificial offering game? Every other champion has had a non-division game, but Goodell’s best buddy Mara gets the added advantage of a gimmie division game. At least it isn’t my Redskins this time. Tell me, is my anger misplaced?

  64. I’m hungry, I think I’ll open a can of TUNA or whoop ass…. Eat your heart out haters……..Who Dat

  65. I guess I’m not gonna see any Dallas love on this thread… Dallas wins, 28-14, with 1 defensive TD. Eli is injured in the 3rd quarter and out 4 weeks. John Mara is taking his tie off in preparation of a jones family beat down, and Brandon Jacobs is in a hall somewhere banging his head on a wall repeating “NO, No, No,No etc..” and Victor Cruz suddenly shows what he really is.. Overhyped.

  66. I was wondering if anyone with the Giants has been questioned or fined for intentionally trying to injure Kyle Williams during the NFC Championship Game?

Two players have admitted to it?

    Crickets from the NFL…….

Oh wait, the NFL Headquarters is in New York City.

    Nevermind.

  67. WEDNESDAY NIGHT – Cowboys @ NY Giants

    SUNDAY NIGHT – Seahawks @ 49ers

    MONDAY NIGHT DOUBLEHEADER –

    NY Jets @ Patriots
    Chargers @ Broncos.

Romo’s hand was basically broken, the Falcons were not a playoff team, the Philbins son died and was a complete distraction for GB, 49ers had that joke muff the punt while Ginn was injured…Bradshaw did fumble, etc…give us a break Little Giant Fans…the have the Pats number and were lucky to play them in both SBs, seriously….everything fell the giants way. Btw one more thing, if the saints beat the 49ers the little giants had NO SHOT….

  72. Let’s see, VAGIANTS wee last in rush offense almost dead last in pass defense but still win the superbowl… I think John Mara the cheater rigged that bs too…. Cheaters

  73. Great were all in for another season of Dallas Cowboy Football and their 8 nationally televised games. They are the best team not to win anything in a decade. Can’t wait for the half a dozen shot of Jerry Jones in his box. What football fan would want to miss that!!

If you really think about Eagles vs Giants games have been most entertaining games inside of the division. Both of these teams have tons of moments that define an season when they play each other. Plus both teams fight for the division title. As an eagles fan, i thought the first game last year in philly was giants turning point and showcase Victor Cruz inwhich created a national story that no one knew about and turned him into a star. As for the Cowboys, they find ways to embarrass themselves continuously every time they go on the national stage.

The “american’s team’ stick is over.

  75. I do like the predictions! Including the one’s from Eagles fans claiming a NY vs. Philly game would be better.

I think, historically, the Cowboys, or the Eagles for that matter, will probably take the game. Then, either miss the playoffs or make it and do a “one and done”.

Go ahead guys, claim the Lombardi trophy again, right even before a game is played. People never learn!!!

Yah, you and whoever team you root for have ALL the class. Wow, talk about casting stones!!! IF I had a penny for every time someone mentions the word IF (the saints beat the 49ers, the giants had NO SHOT…) I WOULD BE A MILLIONAIRE. Dude, stick to the fact, the GIANTS won, you and your team did NOT!!! ACCEPT it and LIVE with it. There is no second or third place in football just champions. Never in the history of the sport did the word “IF” make a damn difference to change who one or who lost.

You bring a new meaning to the term “SORE LOSER.” Hey, how about this, try basketball, maybe the Miami Heat?

  77. When is the last time that the defending champs lost the opener? The NFL always selects an opponent that they can hype up for ratings, but also an easy win for the champs.
