Drew Stanton is coming off a whirlwind week in which he signed a contract with the Jets, was promised the backup quarterback job, asked to be traded after the Jets acquired Tim Tebow, and then got his request and was traded to the Colts. Now that it’s all over, Stanton says he has no hard feelings.

In fact, Stanton told 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis that Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said he was sorry when the Tebow trade made Stanton expendable. Stanton doesn’t think the Jets lied to him when they told him he was going to be the backup, he just thinks the Jets didn’t realize Tebow was going to become available.

They apologized profusely and said that this wasn’t their intent,” Stanton said, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. “And I understand circumstances change and whatnot, so it was time for me to move on and they did that very willingly and helped me get to a team that I’m very excited to be on.”

Stanton said he “didn’t like the whole situation” when the Jets acquired Tebow, whom Stanton referred to as “the biggest sports media darling out there right now.” But he credited the Jets for moving quickly to trade him to the Colts.

Now Stanton’s job is to serve as a backup to the first overall pick in the NFL draft, likely Andrew Luck. Stanton has done that before, with Matthew Stafford in Detroit, and he said that’s a role he’s comfortable with.

“I was a part of it with Matthew Stafford,” Stanton said. “I’ll help aid him in any way possible but also be prepared to play. We only get so many opportunities in this league to go out there and perform on Sundays.”

Stanton probably won’t have many opportunities to perform on Sundays behind Luck. But he’ll have more opportunities than he would have had behind both Sanchez and Tebow.
