Never understood why the NFL doesn’t have a DL like baseball. You see it too often that players are thrown onto IR and thus ending their season.

Should be a few DL spots (out 4-6 week slot), (out 6-8 week slot), and a (out 8-10 week slot) so teams can have thsese players for the stretch run or playoffs.

Can be done.. The NHL would be a good example. You put people on reserve and get a credit on per game basis towards cap until injured player returns.. or use the Long Term Injured Reserve credit similar to NHL for guys out extended periods of time..

Would have to watch teams abusing the IR to save cap space.. i.e. putting players on IR who aren’t injured. They already lie about injuries as it is. (See Pats – everyone questionable)

To stop people from dumping salary or teams from loading up on players jsut before the season is over.. Week 12 you would see teams out of it dumping salary to teams in the playoffs.. would upset the competitive balance thing.

For instance, Dwight Freeney is in the last year of his contract. If the Colts are 4-6 and know they aren’t making the playoffs and know he isn’t coming back next year so they trade him for a 5th round pick to a contender that is lacking a pass rush, that isn’t really “fair”. Most teams aren’t eliminated from the playoffs after week 6 or 8, but by week 10-12 many are out of any realistic shot at the playoffs.

I hate the baseball “rent a player” idea. Go home with the girl you brought to the dance.

Regardless of how long they have been on IR, everyone should be eligible to come off IR for the playoffs.

The NFL does a few things wrong.
1.Trade deadline is too soon.
2.There is no NFL network or NFL sunday ticket on Time Warner Cable.
3.There is no DL in football as described by me earlier. 4.Thursday games are a joke with teams wore out or not having enough time to put a full weeks gameplan in. Only one road team won on the short week.
