The Jets have dominated the headlines in New York this month by “passing” on Peyton Manning, signing Mark Sanchez to a contract extension and trading for Tim Tebow. Giants coach Tom Coughlin is fine with that.
At the league meeting, Coughlin offered up what, for him, passes as trash talk toward the Jets, noting that it’s fine for the other New York team to get all the attention because the Giants are the ones holding the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
“You know who won the Super Bowl even if we’re not on front page. New Yorkers know,” Coughlin said.
Asked about the Jets’ quarterback situation, Coughlin took another little stab at the Jets, noting that he’s been satisfied with Eli Manning for years and hasn’t needed to worry about things like flirting with Eli’s brother, giving Sanchez a vote of confidence or putting a Wildcat quarterback on the field for 20 snaps a game.
“I don’t have a lot of experience with that,” Coughlin said. “Once you start to develop your guy, you like him to have the ball in his hand.”
Asked if Coughlin would ever consider removing Manning for 20 snaps a game to run the Wildcat, Coughlin scoffed, “With our guy?”
New Yorkers know which quarterback in town would never get pulled for a Wildcat gimmick, and it’s the one who won the Super Bowl MVP.
