The Broncos kept another piece of their defense in place by re-signing defensive end Jason Hunter.
The team announced the signing on Thursday and Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post brings word that it is a one-year deal. Hunter was part of the team’s defensive line rotation in 2011 and figures to perform in the same role next season. Robert Ayers and Elvis Dumervil will be the starters again in 2012 with Hunter providing depth behind both men.
“I’ll be able to play both sides if needed, play in different packages,” Hunter said. “I’m like a utility guy. I can play wherever they need me.”
Hunter entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Packers in 2006. He also spent a year with the Lions before joining Denver in 2010, when he made 12 starts for the Broncos as an outside linebacker. The switch to a 4-3 look as well as Von Miller’s arrival moved Hunter, who has 11 career sacks, to defensive end and he’s also been a regular contributor on special teams.
The Broncos previously re-signed linebackers Joe Mays and Wesley Woodyard this offseason.
