Ricky Williams would consider unretiring for the Chargers

When Ricky Williams retired earlier this year, few believed it would stick.  And stick it may not.

Earlier this week, Williams told 103.1 FM in Austin (via ESPN.com) that the 1998 Heisman winner would consider playing for the Chargers.

Williams, who played in 2011 with the Ravens, ranks 26th on the all-time rushing list with 10,009 yards.

Actually, given that Bill Parcells talked Ricky into retiring in the first place, it would make more sense for Ricky to finish his career where it started, if Parcells ends up coaching the Saints in 2012.

This guy really is amazing, he wasted so many years yet still gained so many yards. You wonder what might have been.

  2. pdxbolt says: Mar 30, 2012 1:54 PM

Parcells isnt coaching the Chargers…..we’re stuck with Norv.

  3. joetoronto says: Mar 30, 2012 1:57 PM

Not if he wants a Super Bowl.

With all that nice weather in San Diego, they must grow some nice herb.

    Come Home Ricky!

  7. skinspop102 says: Mar 30, 2012 2:04 PM

Yeah bra! San Diego! Smoke some weed on the beach bra!

  8. whack4flacco says: Mar 30, 2012 2:06 PM

First of all, I believe Ricky signed a 2-yr deal so the Ravens still own his rights if he unretires. They would need to trade or release him for him to go somewhere else.

Second, I don’t understand this quote.
“Given that Bill Parcells talked Ricky into retiring in the first place, it would be fitting for Ricky to finish his career where it started, if Parcells ends up coaching the Saints in 2012.”

What does that have to do with Ricky wanting to play for the Chargers as the blog title suggests? Am I missing something?

  9. yinzer7 says: Mar 30, 2012 2:07 PM

Didn’t Ricky sign a two year deal with the Ravens last summer? He doesn’t have the option of going to Chargers

  10. rickastleydancemoves says: Mar 30, 2012 2:09 PM

Not a bad idea playing behind someone made of glass.

  11. raiderinva says: Mar 30, 2012 2:09 PM

Someone herbal medicated before writing this.

What does Parcells have to do with the Chargers and the beginning to Ricky’s career?

I am so confused, the better more fitting picture would have been of Ricky in the wedding dress.

  12. nineroutsider says: Mar 30, 2012 2:12 PM

I think he just wants a “club card” (medical marijuana card) so that he can smoke Cali’s finest and tell the league to go fly one…it’s strictly for medical purposes.

  13. buzzjunior42 says: Mar 30, 2012 2:14 PM

Did I miss something?? Is Ricky thinkin about the Chargers or the Saints?? Or is Parcells gonna coach the Chargers or Saints??

  14. lowender75 says: Mar 30, 2012 2:15 PM

Proximity to Tijuana is apparently a selling point…

  15. sdakota says: Mar 30, 2012 2:18 PM

he signed 2 year deal w/Ravens last year, they still own his rights

  16. RavenzGunnerz says: Mar 30, 2012 2:20 PM

Ricky was the best Ravens RB in the playoffs last year.

  17. icanspeel says: Mar 30, 2012 2:23 PM

I’m sure it has to do with the fact he grew up in San Diego and went to Patrick Henry HS down there.

  18. kowboydmac says: Mar 30, 2012 2:25 PM

Ganja jokes aside, I’m with the first comment.

He missed nearly, what 3-4? seasons. I think he can get 13K career yards before he’s done. Dude’s a beast.

  19. babyhorsemorgan says: Mar 30, 2012 2:38 PM

Parcells dispensing retirement advice. That’s rich.

  20. brenenostler says: Mar 30, 2012 2:42 PM

For the confused people on here….Ricky started his career in New Orleans. Parcells talked Ricky into retiring. The writer of this article is saying it would make sense for Ricky to join the Saints. But as of right now, Ricky is only considering the Chargers.

  21. drunkenagitator says: Mar 30, 2012 2:49 PM

Everyone seems to believe that Ricky “walked away” so he could wander around getting baked, but that’s not what really happened. He did it because Dave Wannstedt was intent on killing him by having him carry the ball 400 times a year. His entire offense consisted of “run Ricky twice then incomplete play-action pass on 3rd down”. Ricky was just too nice to ever say it, though.

  22. erod22 says: Mar 30, 2012 2:49 PM

Charger fans say “NO!” in fear he might smoke up their whole supply.

  23. psousa1 says: Mar 30, 2012 2:49 PM

Imagine if football was important to him? The two greatest college RB’s I ever saw were Billy Sims and Ricky Williams (Sims and Williams probably both would be top 5 all time in the NFL if is it wasn’t for injury/suspensions). After seeing that ESPN documentary and how reprehensible his father was it’s tough not to cut him some slack in the court of public opinion.

  24. humb0lt says: Mar 30, 2012 2:59 PM

Ricky wants to be a Charger so he can get on the Super Bowl Express in San Diego this year. I’m not opposed to seeing what he can do in training camp auditioning for Mathews’ back up.

“Actually, given that Bill Parcells talked Ricky into retiring in the first place, it would make more sense for Ricky to finish his career where it started, if Parcells ends up coaching the Saints in 2012.”

Yes Mike, you are stupid!! None of the above makes any sense at all!!

    CHARGERS NOT ‘AINTS dimwit!!!

  26. metalschaf67 says: Mar 30, 2012 3:06 PM

Parcells convinced ricky to unretire and he’s from san Diego so that would be him ending his career where he came from.

  27. helinhater says: Mar 30, 2012 3:07 PM

Tombradyswig – sorry man, you’re clearly ignorant as can.

As are everyone else on this thread who can’t understand the point the writer was making. Maybe all of you are just weak, uninformed fans of football…

But as one astute reader pointed out, the last sentence makes perfect sense.

    Let’s break this down:

    1) Ricky was drafted by the Saints.

    2) Ricky is interested in returning to football.

    3) Ricky has a relationship with Bill Parcells.

    4) Bill Parcells may return to coach the Saints.

THUS – PFT is saying maybe it would make sense for Ricky to go there and play for a coach he has some sort of relationship with.

The fact this was so hard for some of you to understand truly makes me depressed. It’s shocking how many unintelligent people surround us on a daily basis.

  28. blue22ro says: Mar 30, 2012 3:13 PM

Ironically, san diego is one of the few cities in California that hasn’t decriminalized weed

  29. miamisaint3255 says: Mar 30, 2012 3:15 PM

@helinhater – besides the important point that Ricky signed 2 year deal with Ravens, the Saints could not possibly have room for him in their crowded backfield – Thomas, Ingram, Sproles, Ivory. Where is Ricky going to fit in? He would not be active on most weeks on Saints, while on just about any other team he would get 10+ carries a game.

  30. ravensworknotsteel says: Mar 30, 2012 3:23 PM

yea w4flacco is dead on we the ravens own him so thats where that stops we’ll take a 6th round pick in this yeears draft or no dice.

  31. brenenostler says: Mar 30, 2012 3:25 PM

Guys, San Diego has nothing to do with Bill Parcells or the beginning of Ricky’s career. Ricky wants to play there for some other reason. Maybe he feels like they need a RB and he likes Philip Rivers or something.

The writer is saying it would make more sense for Ricky to play in New Orleans if he unretires because he was drafted there. It remains to be seen if Ricky has interest in going to New Orleans.

  32. rajbais says: Mar 30, 2012 3:25 PM

Maybe, the Ravens should trade Ricky’s rights for a 7th Rounder.

  33. ravensworknotsteel says: Mar 30, 2012 3:26 PM

saints are good at rb so it would be stupid they have m ingram who is the same type minus blocking on pass plays either way ravens own him we submitted the paperwork when he retired

  34. stonecld33 says: Mar 30, 2012 3:34 PM

You guys are writing so many dimwitted stories you can’t even keep the headline strait. Are you sure he doesn’t want to go to the jets and run the wishbone with Tebow? Just sayin

You think it makes sense for Ricky Williams try to join a coach who thinks Williams should be in retirement? lol

  36. cowboycjn says: Mar 30, 2012 3:43 PM

Why not let him make up his mind and see what all is involved with his Raven contract. Why do we keep getting more stories of speculation and guess this or guess that might happen on here?
You must lead a very lonely life to just print what you are thinking all the time.

  37. jeziyo247 says: Mar 30, 2012 3:55 PM

You would think he’ll consider going to a team that gives him a best chance at a ring, chargers are nowhere near with manning in that division. The saints would be better being that he started with them and they are more superbowl ready than the chargers.

  38. franktherat96 says: Mar 30, 2012 3:57 PM

why would it make more sense to go to new Orleans with parcells. we have mark ingram, Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles and Chris ivory? it makes no sense to come here

  39. jjackwagon says: Mar 30, 2012 4:00 PM

“Ricky wants to be a Charger so he can get on the Super Bowl Express in San Diego this year.”
    ————————————————–

    @ Humbolt
The only way there is a “Super Bowl Express” in San Diego is if Amtrak decides to run a special train to New Orleans.

  40. mding729 says: Mar 30, 2012 4:02 PM

i hope we don’t have another favre on our hands – retiring – unretiring – retiring a million times.

  41. cantonbound13 says: Mar 30, 2012 4:02 PM

You never hear someone wanting to play for Norv. Ricky must be smokin’.

  42. mrgroovesd says: Mar 30, 2012 4:07 PM

Hometown boy wants to play for the home team…why not? I say do it AJ! Let him, you never know how that will play out unless Mathews picks up smoking…LOL J/k

  43. blkdmon says: Mar 30, 2012 4:36 PM

Sorry Ricky…..isn’t happening unless the Ravens trade or release you. Like several have said, and most are ignoring, is the FACT that the Ravens hold his rights this year. He signed a two year deal and walked after one year.
If the Ravens don’t trade or release him, he has ONLY two options:
    1. Play for the Ravens, or
    2. Sit out this season.

  44. matthewcarlson1 says: Mar 30, 2012 4:38 PM

If Ricky goes to the Saints I will lose all the misplaced respect I have for him.

  45. mlmeier says: Mar 30, 2012 4:48 PM

He should play in Tampa Bay with LeGarrette BLOUNT

…sorry, it was just too easy a pun.

    ====

While the explanation makes sense, the original pontification doesn’t make sense. If Parcels told him not to chase this too long, why would he then talk him into unretiring? And in case the writer didn’t notice, the Saints have a very full backfield: Mark Ingram, Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas, and Chris Ivory.

  47. besdayz says: Mar 30, 2012 7:44 PM

You realize the saints are stacked at RB with ingram, ivory, thomas, sproles?

But then again you wouldn’t be the troll you are without posting stuff like this.

Only difference b/t you and a troll on any forum is you have your own forum…..

  48. 69firebird says: Mar 30, 2012 8:01 PM

What the writer meant to say is that he should go back to the ravens, be traded to the aints, who would then be coached by parcels who would get consulting by Sean peyton, who would then have a bounty out on him by his own coach who would then have him get knocked out of the game and go to San Diego and sign up for a medical marijuana card, get some relief and then play for the chargers where parcels would then be the coach of the chargers and will talk Williams into retirement again. Sheesh, everyone should know what the writer was talking about.

  49. greevz52 says: Mar 30, 2012 9:06 PM

Why would you retire from the Ravens to join the Chargers? Maybe Ricky has moved on to drugs other than weed…

  50. humb0lt says: Mar 31, 2012 1:11 AM

Ricky Williams wants to join the team in So Cal that beat his old team in Maryland by three touchdowns a few months ago.

  51. westcoastbolt702 says: Apr 3, 2012 10:01 AM

Would love to see ricky as a charger. This guy is a beast. But mcclain would be a more likely favor in front of williams. 3rd string god… come to beautiful SD ricky! Or jackie battle! Bring em all
