While the explanation makes sense, the original pontification doesn’t make sense. If Parcels told him not to chase this too long, why would he then talk him into unretiring? And in case the writer didn’t notice, the Saints have a very full backfield: Mark Ingram, Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas, and Chris Ivory.

Let’s break this down:

1) Ricky was drafted by the Saints.

2) Ricky is interested in returning to football.

3) Ricky has a relationship with Bill Parcells.

4) Bill Parcells may return to coach the Saints.

THUS – PFT is saying maybe it would make sense for Ricky to go there and play for a coach he has some sort of relationship with.
