"At a time when the NFL is making such a big deal about the failure of the Redskins and Cowboys to comply with the “spirit” of the salary cap, it’s hard to reconcile this loophole with the “spirit” of the Rooney Rule."

It's not a loophole. They're fulfilling the requirement of interviewing a minority coach for the position. I understand why this is worthy of reporting, but I don't understand why you feel compelled to make a bigger issue out of it than it really is.

I agree, but not so much on the future health of the rule. What do you think about the way the spirit of the rule is being disregarded so that the Saints don't have to exactly follow it, like I'm thinking any other team right now that's looking for a head coach, interim or otherwise, would?

I think they just installed a neatly packaged, subtle change, (ala Goodell's looking the other way), and the Rooney Rule will be much more open to shenanigans going forward, with everyone looking the other way.

You should all go back and read, carefully, the postings by "clintonportisheadd" and "11inthebox." They speak the truth.

As a caucasian man who was raised in the deep south in the late 50's and early 60's, and who lives here still, I know a racist when I see one. Hell, David Duke, the former head of the Klan almost won the governship of my home state, and he's only a moderate republican. Due to 400 years of repression based on bigotry and hate, some rules have been put in place to try, inch by inch, to act as a counterbalance. The Rooney Rule is one of them.

Now what we have is a fundamental talking point from sources like Faux News that goes like this: if you are a racist and are confronted with rules that restrict your racism, then scream that the rules themselves are racist.

Are you kidding? The Rooney rule is not “affirmative action.” It’s designed to at least give minorities a look, and then the team hires the best fit for their team.

It sure worked properly in Pittsburgh, Tampa, Indy, Chicago, K.C., etc.

Stop it!
______
Your examples are baseless, as Tomlin, Morris, Dungy/Caldwell, Smith, Crennel, and 2010 Singletary were all first choices with their respective teams. The question is whether they were required to interview a white coach as well. The Rooney rule claims to promote diversity, but if it does not require a minority candidate and a non-minority (white) candidate to be interviewed, then the only segment of the population that stands to benefit from the rule is minorities, thus making it most definitely "affirmative action".

Obviously it would be silly to force teams to interview white coaches under the Rooney rule, but that just shows that the rule absolutely is "Affirmative Action", as it has no benefit or bearing for a large segment of the population.

What about a Rooney Rule for players?

-----------------------------------

There is a Rooney rule for Players it's called college football and the draft. Teams watch film, put players through physical tests, and determine who to pick. The very nature of the NFL forces every team to put ALL players through this to figure out who they think the best are.

If the teams had a process like this for every assistant coach, then the Rooney rule wouldn't exist.

Mike, your incessant sniping and sniveling about the Saints' coaching search is getting tiresome. First, as the vast majority of these comments have asserted, the "Rooney Rule" is ridiculous to begin with. Any major non-governmental organization with a similar "rule" would be sued into oblivion in this country. Second, Sean Peyton is the head coach of the team. He has said publicly that it's 100% that he will return following the suspension. The Saints are looking to fill an INTERIM job that wil last only 10 MONTHS. What competent candidate, whether minority or otherwise would seek or accept a job under those circumstances? The potential Parcells hire is a once-in-a-lifetime special case to which the laughable Rooney Rule should not apply.

woodyg says: Mar 30, 2012 10:57 AM

Will it ever end?

This goes to once again prove that the punishment for ‘bountygate’ should have been a complete dismantling of the New Orleans franchise. A player/coach dispersal draft would have exiled the guilty to a defunct career ending. The SuperDome would have been torn down. All written mention of a team named the Saints would have been removed from NFL history. Any conversation of a Saint’s football team in public would be deemed illegal by Congress. It would be like the Saints never existed.

Instead of “Who Dat”, it would be “Where Dat.”

This is just the sort of comment that fans of losing franchises would make (Vikings, anyone?).

I've said it before, but MF deemed the comment delete-able, so I'll try it again because people like woodyg need to read over and over again how stupid their thinking is.

Don't stop with putting people in jail for speaking the name of the franchise. Light torches, carry pitch forks and drag each and every Saint from their beds. Lynch 'em.

Wait, wait. While you're in New Orleans torch the city too (probably not before you enjoy our hospitality, culture and stuff your face with our outstanding food). Then, mow down all the fans and insist upon the dividing up of the Louisiana Territory with your poor losing team's states. (I'm talking to you MN.)

Come on man.

As a Lions fan I don't have too much sympathy for the Saints. But the Rooney rule should not apply in this instance. Parcells is not taking over the team for good, he's just filling in while the head coach is on suspension. He's babysitting the team not taking Payton's job. Is that about right?

Dude. Really? A rule in which a minority candidate INTERVIEWS for a job he’s not going to get bothers you that much? You do understand the rule is not a mandate for organizations to hire a black coach. It’s not for tenure or anything. It’s an INTERVIEW.

But let’s go back to the real issue here: so why DO you hate black people so much?

Nothing like a "Rooney Rule" story to bring the racists out of the woodwork. You see the same tone when a story about a black player going bankrupt hits the site.

The "Rooney Rule" was put into effect to give minority's an opportunity to meet ownership and for ownership to open their horizons beyond the privileged white world they live in and most likely grew up in. Without a "Rooney Rule" there is no Tomlin in Pittsburgh. You would have Whisenhunt-and most likely no Super Bowl wins in the last 5 years.

The number of blacks playing college football is about the same as pro ball. Yet Division I schools (which have no requirement to interview minorities as the NFL does) have only a handful of black head coaches. Do the math folks-whats 5 out of 120? 3 percent? The NFL has been about 20% black head coaches at any given time ONLY BECAUSE of this rule. ONLY BECAUSE of this rule did they get a shot. ONLY BECAUSE of this rule are we spared the recycling of the Dave Wannstadt's and Steve Mariucci's of the world.

And thats a good thing......

To sum it up-the Rooney Rule is and was a great idea and should in fact be expanded to college football as well. The Rooney Rule will be needed as long as a story like this gets so many hate speech radio Fox News watching yahoos exist. It will be needed until the murder of a black kid armed with Skittles is met with universal outrage instead of resentment that his killer be arrested.

Don't bother with the "thumbs down". I could care less.

So now the NFL is complicit in possibly "fine tuning" their own rule, so that they can look the other way while the Saints (with the aid of their aforementioned partner in crime) prove that the Rooney Rule is a sham.

Us "dumb as hell" folks understand the spirit of the rule. But the real question here is, has it provided tangible results for the league. The league, not college, the CFL, arena or any obscure HC outside of the league.
If the "rule" isn't being skirted here, then why is say, Tomlin the only relevant and successful coach in the league right now....emphasis on relevant and successful.
Yes, all visible and noteworthy organizations need rule and positive PR, I get that.
Yep, all teams make a mockery of the "rule".
In one form or another so do thousands of proud members of private industry.
So, in turn, if the League is concerned about its image, maybe they should add a clause in the clause, underlyifng the clause that would protect a franchise from further scrutiny should they eggriously break a rule in order to bring in a burned out hall of fame coach who can keep the seat warm for the rule breaker. What a predicament.

This is clearly a unique situation; the Rooney Rule should not apply.
When a coach is fired mid-season, the Rule doesn’t apply when an interim coach is named to finish out the year.

=============================

It absolutely would apply in those situations - IF they went outside the organization. It's already been stated that they don't need to comply with the rule if they went internal to name an interim coach.

You can argue that the rule itself is outdated and stupid (it is), but it is being applied uniformly to both situations.
