What will Shawn Payton tell the union members?

Well guys, um, just because we paid our guys to end you career, well, you know I love you guys and that’s why I’m on the NFLPA Executive Committee. We’re here for you.

Should go over really well, eh?

---
Maybe you should move to North Korea. How can Sean Payton (you'd think after 1,000 articles you could spell his name correctly) be on the NFLPA Executive Committee when he isn't even in the NFLPA? He's a coach not a player!

The sad part is you still have more thumbs up than thumbs down because people come here just to hate on the Saints, regardless of logic and coherency.

Why, exactly, should the NFLPA have to physically travel to the NFL’s offices in order to see this information in this day and age?

Sounds like the commissioner's office is playing some kind of word game here, attempting to paint themselves in a "brighter light" than they deserve.

Raise your hand if you're surprised that De Smith wasn't entirely truthful. Wow. Always thought he was scum, now he confirmed it.

I'm not a union basher because I know it has its place in the workforce to protect their members from over-bearing and unfair labor practices. However, they've gone way beyond that (not just in the NFL) when they take the position that none of their members are ever guilty of anything, and in fact, are always victims.

Personally, I don't see any reason the NFLPA should be involved in recommending any punishment. After the punishments have been handed down, then it can get involved in appealing those punishments on behalf of the players. That's like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse.

In my opinion the NFLPA is an organization that defends illegal and unethical behavior. They have zero credibility in my mind. They’re a bunch of punks.

Yeah, that's right. A bunch of punks led by Executive Director DeMaurice Smith. Let's see what his accomplishments are.

United States Attorney Generals’ Award

John Evans Trial Advocacy Award from the United States Attorney’s Association

Smith chaired the Patton Boggs government investigations and white-collar practice group.

While at the Department of Justice, Smith was responsible for the development of business and strategic plans for prison construction.

Board of Governors of the D.C. Bar Association

Former president of the Assistant United States Attorney’s Association

Board of Directors of the Good Samaritan Foundation, which assists inner city youth in Washington D.C. in school and with job opportunities.

Yeah, you're right. He DOES sound like a punk. Now let's see what Goodell's accomplishments are.

He was a captain of his HS football team. From 1982 - 2001 he logged hours in middle management in the NFL.

Good thing you pointed out what punks those NFLPA folks are, because you couldn't tell by their credentials.

I've never seen an 'organization' run as poorly as the NFLPA. DeMaurice Smith single-handedly has turned into a farce. So poorly managed, considering how D.Smith entered into it, talking tough, standing tough against the NFL, etc. There's so much I could specifically point out, but it would take too long.

The folks crying foul about unions defending scumbags are preaching to the choir over here, but the most basic function of a union is to protect every paying member the same. Failure to do this results in a lawsuit. DeMo doesn't have a choice in this situation if he wants to avoid a blatant dereliction of duty and the litigation that would surely follow. The union is going to have to argue that the players were only following orders, and it will probably grant AT LEAST a reduction in sentence, if not reversal.

Unfortunately, that's one of the downsides of a union labor force. No matter how awesome you are (or aren't, as in this case), you're all treated the same, or someone gets sued.

Why, exactly, should the NFLPA have to physically travel to the NFL’s offices in order to see this information in this day and age?

In my opinion the NFLPA is an organization that defends illegal and unethical behavior. They have zero credibility in my mind. They’re a bunch of punks.

Well said! I am all for the athletes in most cases but it always seems the NFLPA is always trying to defend scumbags that shouldn't be defended. Don't get me wrong I know one of the most important jobs of a union is to protect its employees but when said employees are committing actual crimes they don't deserve to get preferential treatment and should have to man up and face the consequences!
