Eagles unlikely to find a starting tackle in the draft

AP

When they confirmed that starting left tackle Jason Peters suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, the Eagles issued a statement saying they would “continue to scan the free-agent market, also knowing the draft is less than a month away.” Of those two options for finding Peters’ replacement, the free-agent market is going to be a better bet than the draft.

On the free agent market, the Eagles were lucky — if you can ever say you were lucky after losing your Pro Bowl left tackle to a devastating injury — that two good offensive tackles, Demetrius Bell and Marcus McNeill, are still available. Bell is visiting Philadelphia this weekend and the Eagles have reached out to McNeill’s agent.

But in the draft, there’s only one player this year who looks like he’s going to be ready to step in and be a starting NFL offensive tackle in Week One: USC’s Matt Kalil, who will be gone long before the Eagles’ first-round pick, No. 15 overall. The other offensive tackles in this year’s draft would be reaches at No. 15, NFL Network’s Mike Mayock told the Philadelphia Daily News. Iowa’s Riley Reiff, Stanford’s Jonathan Martin and Ohio State’s Mike Adams are the next-best tackles on the board, but there’s a big drop-off from Kalil to any of them.

“Reiff, Martin and Adams, all three of those guys should be drafted in the 20s, not 15,”’ Mayock said. “I would struggle drafting any of them at 15.”

If the Eagles can’t land either Bell or McNeill in free agency, they may try to land Reiff, Martin or Adams in the draft. But if they do that, they may find that the recently re-signed King Dunlap remains their best option to fill Peters’ big shoes as the Week One starter at left tackle.

  1. Whoever they sign … one thing will be certain … that player will immediately become the best in the NFL.

  2. Am so sorry for the eagles hope their fans suffer the little prick who held the sign hey jojo wheres your son after one of the Bucs player lost his son is the reason behind the almost hate for u f#@&gkad your women are ugly as the words on tbat sign you all desevre the worst

  3. I think they are missing that Todd Herremans has filled in very often at left tackle and makes alot of sense there. Makes way more sense to go with him and sign a right tackle.

  4. Every time PFT publishes an article relating to the Eagles, you can be certain that jenniferxxx is the first to post with a remark trashing the Eagles…closet Eagles’ fan…

Yeah, lets blame an entire fan base and organization for one idiot’s sign. Better yet, let’s put all our thoughts in one large run-on sentence! That’ll show ’em

Dude you’re a moron. TB blows and yes let’s sign VJ and overpay him in a a heavy run offense, that makes a lot of sense. Saints, falcons and panthers will be better than TB.

I agree. That chick is always dogging the eagles. These people don’t realize that eagles fans are real, passionate fans. #bleedgreenforlife

  8. Wow, what a mistake that would be to draft someone at 15 instead of 20. Like 5 spots is that big of a reach. Drafting a 4th round prospect at 15 is a reach. All this over analyzing has gone too far. If you pick at 15 then get the best tackle available if you want or trade out if able.

  9. I don’t understand why draftniks and the media are claiming there is some HUGE drop in OT talent after Kalil. Reilly Reiff, while nowhere near the physical freak that Kalil is, is actually a technically more sound player. Kalil plays too upright, which he got away with against weak college opponents, but in the NFL playing too upright is going to get you beat. Plus his run blocking is suspect. Reiff on the other hand, plays flawlessly. So while Reiff may not be as physically gifted, he’s probably more pro-ready than Kalil.

In other words, I disagree that there is a major drop off in talent after Kalil.

  10. If Reiff isn’t top 20 talent, then how come I’ve only seen one mock draft with him going below 13 (Dane Brugler) and most with him in the top 10?

  11. The bengals have a starting tackle in Anthony Collins, I’m sure we’d let him go for one of those 2nd rounders philly has 2 of. Good trade for both parties, collins gets to start, because obviously he isnt beating out Andrew Whitworth or Andre Smith on the bengals, and the bengals get another pick to pick up a playmaker or sure up the guard position in round 2. Win win!

  12. Maybe somehow they’ll trade a fourth round pick to a Pro Bowl LT who no one thought was available…

Well I see the Tampa public education system is doing a wonderful job…

  14. Convert Brandon Graham. Lord knows he can’t play on the Defensive side of the ball.
