Redskins won’t request private workout with Griffin

628x471-3 AP

On Tuesday morning, Colts owner Jim Irsay disclosed that quarterback Robert Griffin III declined an invitation to conduct a private workout for the team that holds the first pick in the draft.

Griffin won’t get a chance to apply the same treatment to the Redskins, because the Redskins won’t be asking.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Redskins decided against a private workout with Griffin because they saw everything they needed to see on March 21, at his Pro Day workout.

The next question is whether the Redskins will conduct a private workout with Andrew Luck.

Griffin shouldn’t have turned down the Colts…. he had an opportunity to back up what hes been raving about being a contender for the 1st pick…

by doing a whole bunch of talking about how great he is then not stepping up when asked…. makes you wonder, just a slight bit, what is he so worried about that hes unwilling to even try for the spot?

There’s really no point in a private workout with either Griffin or Luck when you’ve already dealt a ton of picks to go up and get a Qb and the choice of which one they get won’t be up to them. It’s not like they’re going to see something that makes them say “Oh, I guess we’ll draft an offensive lineman.” Whichever Qb falls to #2 they’ll take, and they’ll do so gladly and without a 2nd thought.

RG Leaf . Guys all talk and about the fame and money. Doesn’t really love football

If you were a QB whom would you like to teach you, a colts coach that’s never been heard of or Shanny who Steve Young named his best offensive coach ever????

  5. dreamofkristen says: Apr 3, 2012 1:19 PM

The Colts are classless. Bravo to RGIII for saying no to their charade.

He already stepped up at his Pro Day and proved he has more talent and skill than Luck.

Everybody saw it. Everybody knows it.

  6. jcmeyer10 says: Apr 3, 2012 1:21 PM

What he was saying by turning down a private workout with the Colts is that:

‘I appreciate how much the Skins had to give up to get me, and I am their quarterback now’.

Trying to start off his tenure as a Skin with as much fan support as possible.

  7. thraiderskin says: Apr 3, 2012 1:22 PM

I think Griffin is saying he would prefer to go to the Redskins and the Skins have made is abundantly clear that they want him. I’m not saying he wouldn’t prosper in Indy, I think he just wants to be a Redskin at this point.

  8. crapboys says: Apr 3, 2012 1:22 PM

No random guy. Keep your random thoughts to yourself. RG3 knows the Colts wont take him no matter what. So why go through the show. Is he worried? That what you think? Colts have their minds made up. He could run to the moon and the colts will still take luck.

  9. tennesseeoilers says: Apr 3, 2012 1:22 PM

RGIII, what were you thinking blowing off the Colts?!? Didn’t you see what happened to John Elway and Eli Manning after they avoided teams with dysfunctional front offices? Oh … my bad.

  10. brohamma says: Apr 3, 2012 1:22 PM

They are afraid of getting diss’d too! ROFL!

  11. steely185 says: Apr 3, 2012 1:23 PM

He’s not doing private workouts for any team. He had his pro day to show his stuff and wanted to help focus some attention on his teammates.

Also why work out now when he can only hurt his draft stock or risk a random injury before the draft.

  12. awdlmd says: Apr 3, 2012 1:24 PM

I don’t understand why the Redskins wouldn’t bring in RG3. They could spend a full day with him going over the playbook and watching film then send him away with a backpack full of study material. Seems like a wasted opportunity.

  13. thatdudewiththemarauder says: Apr 3, 2012 1:24 PM

Why does he need a private workout? He already has his playbook, parking spot, and clothes and pictures in his locker at Redskins Park. No Need. HTTR!!!!

  14. dreamofkristen says: Apr 3, 2012 1:25 PM

redskins have already proved that they want RGIII.
The Colts are still playing A-hole games, just like they did with Manning.

No wonder RGIII doesnt want any part of that classless organization

  15. fijabbersman345 says: Apr 3, 2012 1:25 PM

    @dreamofkristen

More talent and skill than Luck? Alright. I’ll take Luck. You take RGIII. We’ll see who has more Super Bowls in a decade.

  16. skinsshark23 says: Apr 3, 2012 1:25 PM

There are a million reasons why he could have turned this down, or was advised to turn this down.

I know this though, his draft stock has nowhere else to go but down after his Pro Day. Why go work out for a team that have basiscally admitted that they wont be taking him, when they already know what they are going to get from him.

Sounds like he feels he is already a Skin to me…

  17. sb50 says: Apr 3, 2012 1:26 PM

Idk why everyone thinks private workout arent important.

Private workouts will tell you if he is understands the type of offense they want him to run.

A pro day i what RG3 wants to do and the private workout is what the REDSKINS want him to do
Idk why they wouldnt want him to do a private workout

  18. whatnojets says: Apr 3, 2012 1:26 PM

Years ago, St.John’s University was forced to change their name from “Redmen” to “Red Storm”!

I think that the Indian Nation should demand that the “Redskins” change their name immedtaly.

    Agree or disagree?

“Shanny” couldn’t win a Super Bowl with John Elway until he got Terrell Davis to carry the load. Now there’s a great offensive mind.

  20. baddegg says: Apr 3, 2012 1:29 PM

This makes sense. Whoever Colts take — Luck or Griffin — the Redskins are taking the other one. It doesn’t matter what they would do in a workout.

The Colts are the ones with the incentives to see both players. As for the Redskins, the decision is going to be straightforward. I mean, once the Colts make their pick, the Redskins should be on the clock like 3 seconds…

  21. jackm79 says: Apr 3, 2012 1:32 PM

RG3 is a very humble guy. Where do you guys get this crap? He is not Ryan Leaf. I feel bad for all the RG3 nay sayers. Starting to believe you are just hating due to the color of his skin! Shame……

What? Please give an example of how RGIII has been like that at all, because he has been the exact opposite of that and you both just sound really retarded right now

  23. Stupid Raiders Fan says: Apr 3, 2012 1:32 PM

I have no reason to think RG will fail but I think the Redskins are making it a little to easy for him.

Play hard to get a little bit maybe he’ll work a little harder for you.

  24. blacknole08 says: Apr 3, 2012 1:32 PM

That’s because he’s going to the Redskins.

  25. lukelesourd says: Apr 3, 2012 1:32 PM

RGIII has said he would not work out privately for any team because he wanted teams to come to his pro day so other Baylor players like Kendall Wright could improve their draft stock. He made this known to teams before his pro day so this really shouldn’t come as a surprise to Irsay and it’s why the Redskins won’t ask for a workout.

  26. Stupid Raiders Fan says: Apr 3, 2012 1:33 PM

Oh and if I was the Redskins I would request a workout just to shove it in the Colts face when he said yes.

  27. braven4evr says: Apr 3, 2012 1:33 PM

    @randomguy & doreb

He has nothing to prove until he steps on the field for his first nfl game. As much as I don’t like saying this, the Skins would be the best team to be drafted by between the Colts and them. Not only do teams play games in the draft, players and agents do also!

  29. wdcskins says: Apr 3, 2012 1:37 PM

Yeah, the ‘Skins aren’t requesting the “private workout” because Snyder doesn’t have the same need to be the story that Irsay does.

Whining about Griffin’s “big mouth” is getting kind of old. I sincerely hope everyone understands that he does not hold his own press conferences and make these pronouncements.

Everything he says is in the context of Griffin being interviewed by some variety of sports journalist looking for a story. Would you rather he refused to talk to reporters. Then they would certainly have a story: “Baylor quarterback Griffin creepy and reclusive. Experts question his leadership ability.”

And for those who are offended by him discussing, or as randomguy puts it “raving”, whether he’s worthy of being the first pick, what do you want him to say? “No, I’m a dramatically inferior prospect to Andrew Luck. I truly don’t deserve any consideration from Indianapolis and will be forfeiting my Heisman trophy to Luck as soon as possible.”

Given the questions he’s asked and the position he’s in, it’s silly to think that Griffin has given anything but the most reasonable and PR friendly responses he could over the past few months. To say he’s done anything other than exactly what’s expected of him is inaccurate and unfair.

Jeez, dude…did Jim Irsay steal your girlfriend? you really have a dislikin’ for the Colts…

  32. ubummer says: Apr 3, 2012 1:40 PM

Well Shanahan, that’s sure showing him who is the boss, right from the start. During practice are you going to call him RG3, Mr Griffin, or sir?

  33. geniusesq says: Apr 3, 2012 1:43 PM

    That’s because we’ve seen enough. We’ll take RG3 now.

Hey Colts, “good Luck” with that.

  34. chipwade says: Apr 3, 2012 1:45 PM

Luck and RG3 had such good pro days that they have nothing more to prove. The only thing a private workout could do is hurt their stock if they have a bad day.

  35. effedinLA says: Apr 3, 2012 1:48 PM

when his rookie contract is up I’m sure the Skins would come up with a much better offer than the Colts. Keep thinking ahead RG. There isn’t much difference between #1 and #2 $ anymore. It gets better with your next contract. Much better chance at a good beginning with Shanny and the Skins.

  36. nflfollower says: Apr 3, 2012 1:51 PM

Snyder or irsay? Who would u rather play for? Honestly, as a neutral party, that’s tough, but I would take Snyder because he doesn’t tweet (becoming a new way to measure a man) and he’s not afraid to overpay. So yea, Snyder I guess.

  37. tonyugoh says: Apr 3, 2012 1:55 PM

Hmm CAA represents not only represents RG3 but Peyton Manning as well, so maybe there’s a rift between the two sides that is making Griffin sour on the Colts? Idk just a thought

I like this move by the Skins. There doing everything they can to show Griffin is wanted. When reports were declaring A. Luck a Colt already. The Redskins were thinking of the Masterplan to get the 2nd spot from the Rams. The Skins gave up alot to get in position to get RG3 and I know he respects that. So this is just what RG3 wants to hear.

You nailed it JC! That is exactly what he is saying without saying it. Plus, lets face it, the NFC East has a lot more prestige and history than the AFC South which is comprised of mostly expansion teams.

  41. mallyredskins says: Apr 3, 2012 3:10 PM

Ha! the skins didnt plan on doing private workouts with him because we seen what he could do during his proday. He knows he wants to come to DC and we will gladly welcome him. No private workout needed, we know what we’re getting. Unlike some teams.

  42. kronix7 says: Apr 4, 2012 4:54 AM

I think if I was a player of RG3 calibur I would do a private workout for whatever team that asked. There is never to much exposure. Will he still be picked at number 2? Yes he will.

  43. kronix7 says: Apr 4, 2012 5:01 AM

I’ve never once seen aanybody post anything about anyone’s skin color. Idiot. Irsay did manage to put together a winning franchise I don’t be Snyder has. He only bought the just to throw money at it. That team hasn’t been revelant under his ownership. Irsay is a wacko for sure but he isn’t stupid. Kraft seems to be the only owner that has any sense.
