Eagles sign Demetress Bell

The Eagles have landed a possible replacement for injured left tackle Jason Peters and it’s probably not the guy you were expecting.

Well, not exactly the guy you were expecting. The team announced that they have signed Demetress Bell to a five-year deal on Wednesday. Until the point of his signing, you probably knew him as Demetrius Bell, but it seems that he is celebrating his arrival in the City of Brotherly Love by changing the spelling of his first name.

“Demetress is a guy we’ve followed since he joined the league,” general manager Howie Roseman said in a statement from the team. “He’s a big, athletic left tackle and he has quite a few games of experience under his belt with Buffalo. He’ll excel with our style of play on the offensive line.”

Bell took several visits around the league since the start of free agency, but the Eagles quickly became the frontrunner for his services when news of Peters’ Achilles injury broke over the weekend. The key now will be for Bell to stay healthy and make good on the flashes of talent he’s shown with the Bills over the past few years.

Hope this guy can stay healthy for the one season we need him.

How do the eagles still have cap space, lets be real here…

In other Eagles news, Andy Reid has discovered a meal between dinner and breakfast the next day.

  4. thagreatone24 says: Apr 4, 2012 11:48 AM

He needs to stay healthy and show he is worth it…hopefully Mudd can bring out the best in him..,also now Andy doesn’t need to target a ot early n the draft, now one in the later rounds for depth

    good move

  6. notoriousbri says: Apr 4, 2012 11:50 AM

I dont care how he spells his first name as long as he can stay healthy…

isnt he also the guy that replaced Peters in Buffalo after the Eagles got Peters in a trade?

    Kinda fitting..

  7. marshawnlynchlookslikepredator says: Apr 4, 2012 11:51 AM

And the Eagles continue their recent tradition of letting the Bills draft left tackles for them.

  8. stubbyjones says: Apr 4, 2012 11:51 AM

    Maybe he should spell it D I V A ?

  9. bobloblaw3 says: Apr 4, 2012 11:51 AM

He fits Howard Mudd’s style better than any of the other FA offensive tackles…good signing. Way too many years though.

  10. tyjack09 says: Apr 4, 2012 11:51 AM

Good Pick up here with Peters being out for the year. If he can stay healthy, this is a solid addition to our O-Line…

Now they need to focus on the draft and start adding some solid depth to the team…

I am changing my name to “Max Power”.

  12. duraco20 says: Apr 4, 2012 11:52 AM

I’m impressed they actually addressed the LT need so quickly. Now just draft a couple of defensive studs in the early rounds & sign Lesean McCoy to an extension and this has been a very succesful offseason for Philly!

  13. turk2875 says: Apr 4, 2012 11:54 AM

Great signing, although I would be more confident going into the season with him if he wasn’t as fragile as he is. But I still think the Eagles will address LT early in this months draft.

Anybody know who Demetress Bell is?

  17. stanklepoot says: Apr 4, 2012 11:56 AM

Eagles definitely needed a decent replacement with the injury to Peters. As an Eagles fan, I really don’t care how he spells his first name. As long as the words dream and team never appear in the same sentence in any of his comments, it’s all good. Oh, and to those in the media that have said Vick lost his blind side protection when Peters went down, Vick is left-handed. For him, his blind side protector is actually the Right Tackle.

  18. deathtoromo says: Apr 4, 2012 11:57 AM

Good signing. Now they can have two injured left tackles.

  19. seatownballers says: Apr 4, 2012 11:57 AM

    *********************************************************

Please ,, stop worrying about money.

The Eagles Front Office is one of the best in the business on contracts.

the deal is almost certainly front-loaded, with little money guaranteed beyond 2012.

  30. andyreidisarrogantandfat says: Apr 4, 2012 12:05 PM

I love how every homer eagle fan is like –what a great signing our line is the best in the nfl again. you know zip about this guy except what was fed to you by the eagles and of course this guy is the best to them. they r never wrong. he traveled around half the league and no one signed him. come on eagle nation use your own mind and don’t be spoon fed. this guy is fair to poor and mikey will still be on the run.

  31. deathmonkey41 says: Apr 4, 2012 12:06 PM

Why is everyone so hung up on the 5 yr thing? This is the NFL, not MLB- all that matters is guaranteed money. If they cut him next year, they’re only responsible for whatever guaranteed money is left- not the remainder of the contract.

Yes, instead of signing a competent free agent with all the spare cap money they still have laying around, how about they just draft an unproven rookie and hope he turns out ok. Maybe bring up someone from the practice squad to protect a notoriously fragile quarterback that they owe a lot of money to this year.

I don’t agree with all the moves the Eagles FA makes, but I can at least be thankful that someone as dumb as you isn’t in charge.

  33. alaricsrevenge says: Apr 4, 2012 12:09 PM

Don’t read into the contract years or money wise. I think we all know enough as football fans that both numbers mean absolutly nothing. He’ll be here for this year (as long as he can stay healthy) and that’s all we can count on. He could sign for 10 years and 150 million and it still doesn’t mean he’s going to get it. This isn’t basketball.

Lets be honest. You are an idiot.

    Seantownballers:
    Ditto.

one free agent signing and a trade doesn’t constitute “buying all the NFL free agents”

Just because Philly’s front office is better than yours doesn’t give you an excuse to be butt hurt. Well, then again, I guess it does…

  40. mvp43 says: Apr 4, 2012 12:17 PM

Its a good signing in the fact that there’s really no one else available and if he can stay healthy, he’s a decent player. I’m sure they overpaid a bit, but timing is everthing.

  41. phillywantstheirbowl says: Apr 4, 2012 12:17 PM

Great move by BigRed and Co. Loving what they have done so far this offseason. Now lets go have a great draft, training camp, and stay healthy. And get the city that damn Lombardi trophy.

  42. eagles92 says: Apr 4, 2012 12:17 PM

For all the people that are saying “5 years is way too many”. Well it’s probably a front loaded deal w/ nothing guaranteed after this year . On another note great signing now it lets us take the best player available in the draft.

  43. flyersfan19 says: Apr 4, 2012 12:20 PM

To all the people complaining about the length of the deal, the length of the deal doesn’t matter. All that matters is how much guaranteed money he is getting and how the money is spread out. For all we know he gets the guaranteed money up front and the final 4 years of the contract are all non-guaranteed and it could basically be a 1 year deal then cut. So until the contract details are released, settle down about the 5 years.

  44. cannonballdookie says: Apr 4, 2012 12:20 PM

Well the terms are the only thing that struck me as surprising.

He signed with a 5 year 35 mill deal..

Now the longevity is there just in case peters is really badly injured & it usually takes about 1 1/2 years to get that spring back in the leg.

He’s a decent player, but a penalty machine. No better options were out there as starting LT material..

I look at it like, we filled that major hole.. we can still keep the draft board as is,, & when Peters is Finally healthy,, we then have trade options in Bell, Mathis, Herrimans.

    not a bad move fellas.

  49. andyreidisfat says: Apr 4, 2012 12:25 PM

So I am ok with bell on the left side for Vick and most likely the right side if anyone else plays qb.

The eagles have quietly had a great offseason so far. Now if they could just draft barron a dt and the outside backer from N.C. The birds will be a top team.

This is a move out of desperation. Any other team would do the same if their starting LT went down. So let’s not build this up as a great signing eagles. Just a necessary one. NFC east is loaded with pass rushers. Ware orakpo jpp umenyiora Kerrigan.

  62. pjhurley5 says: Apr 4, 2012 12:41 PM

Not too many years if Peters can’t come back and regain his Pro-Bowl form…my guess is that they guaranteed little beyond 2 years and gave themselves an easy out if Peters comes back healthy.

Hell, if Peters comes back healthy and Bell lives up to his billing (and stays healthy as well), they could potentially shift Bell to RT and move Herremans back inside to G if Mathis or Watkins don’t pan out in the long term.

    ————————————–

Well if your name actually did represent what you are you would know that Eagles are one of the best cap managing teams in the NFL. They have been 17 years. Also they usually go into each season a good 15 million under the cap atleast. In fact I challenge you to find one season besides last year where the Eagles had cap problems. The are some things the Eagles front office doesn’t do well, like draft defensive players, but they don’t overpay for players and they don’t overpay in trades. They manage the cap better then anyone and they don’t get stuck in long term deals with old players which keeps them from getting in cap trouble.

    _________________________________

It is called making key transactions. Like dumping salary on guys past their experation date(Justice, Jackson), having players who want to be there take less then they could get elsewhere(Namdi, and Jenkins), taking care of your own in a way that works for the cap (Cole, Hermans, Jackson and soon McCoy). Additionally, many of the people from last year liek Smith, Brown and Young were only on one year deals. Its is rather simple and one of the strengths of the orginization. Of course Eagles fans are stupid and would rather each year sign the biggest name, instead of targeting select players but thats neither here nor there.

I hope, for the sake of your intelligence, that you’re not referring to Peters as the 0-1…yes, he’s currently injured, but to trade a late first round pick for a guy who has basically been the best LT in the game for the past few seasons is something I’d like to call a fleecing, and a solid 1-1.

Really not sure where the “This guy is pretty good” comments are coming from. Bell should have been a back-up on any other team, but Buffalo had no other options. Hariston stepped in after Bell was hurt in week 3 and played much better, and he was a Rook. An avergae of $7 mil a season is high for a guy like Bell.

  83. timasahh says: Apr 4, 2012 1:16 PM

Isn’t tackle the more difficult position to play on the Offensive Line as compared to Guard? Maybe they sign him long term and look to transition him to one of the weaker guard spots when Peters returns. Who knows what Howard Mudd and the FO saw on tape, but I doubt they signed him for 5 years just to play for one and then hang out as a backup until someone leaves.

  84. mykelane says: Apr 4, 2012 1:19 PM

Eh, not quite sure I like this signing.

He sounds like he lacks confidence when he said “He (Jason Peters) was their franchise left tackle, so those are big shoes to fill,”… “I’m sure I can handle it. I’m not worried about it.”

Was he able to handle it in Buffalo when he replaced Peters there too?

  85. phillyphan77 says: Apr 4, 2012 1:22 PM

With a five year deal they leave themselves options. They could release him, trade him or someone else. I like the move. He fills our biggest need and now we don’t need to use the 15th pick on an OL.

  86. radrhatr says: Apr 4, 2012 1:24 PM

    0-1 Soon to be 0-2 on ex-Bills LT’s.
Do you not think the Bills would have resigned him, having nothing else in the stable, if he could have stayed healthy? Better have a good backup Andy

Lets start by saying this makes absolutely sense. You lost out on a serviceable left tackle with good upside. Do you really think your team will be better without him? And thinking he was “let go” due to health concerns. Consider Mario Williams has missed 3 games in 2010 and another 11 in 2011 and then “let go” by the texans is the same logic you applied and then your team signed him to a 100 million dollar contract over 6 years and your happy about that one I bet.

  94. bobbyhoying says: Apr 4, 2012 2:02 PM

We really need to let the Bills’ F.O. pick us another left tackle. Peters is not even drafted and this guy is a 7th rounder. Why don’t we just write them a big check for their advice during the draft? Really.

Eagles fans are the most delusional fans in all of pro sports. You guy are actually psyched up about this signing? lol. And then on top of it some of you are saying that they have had a great off season so far? They lose a decent amount of their players, one of/if not thee best player on their offensive side of the ball is out for the season, and your best RB has yet to get a new contract. Yeah, awesome off season you guys are having!

    ————————-

Yep, they did lose Peters who is excellent. Buy, by getting Bell, they got as good a LT as was available. And knowing the Eagles, they aren’t breaking the bank. I am not going to be shouting this from the mountain top, but hey do you have a better plan. The excitement to some is that they had a huge hole and they filled it about as well as they could have.

Speaking of delusional…lose a decent amount of players? Who? Juqua Parker, Steve Smith, Ronnie Brown, Vince Young. I mean really who are we talking about. They didn’t let one starter go. Though I have always enjoyed Juqua but hey, he is 34.

Locked up Cole, Herremanns, Jackson, Mathis. (That is called long-term stability.)

Traded for Demeco Ryans getting him at a very reasonable price and filling their biggest offseason need (before the Peters injury). And as I recall, his teammates on Houston were not happy to see him go.

McCoy – horrible. No new contract and it is already April. Better get it done tomorrow because the season starts in…in…oh, yes 5 months.

Come back, sporto, when you really have something to say!

  99. grocerystorediva says: Apr 4, 2012 2:50 PM

This is a good signing. All the analysts say that he was the best FA Tackle available and I believe the Packers, Bears and one other team wanted him. He choose Philly.

Look, I don’t understand the Eagles thought process at times, and I don’t want to give them too much credit before the draft, but they are one of the best managed franchises. We have MONEY always. We took Ryans off the Texans’ hands because they needed the cap room. I haven’t heard “Eagles” and “no cap room” in the same breath. We resigned our own guys and bought in the MLB we needed.

People want to play for Andy. Howard Mudd is known as the BEST OLine coach in the league. If anything Mr. Bell’s career will be resurrected by Mudd’s coaching, just like Mathis. I’m VERY optimistic. I don’t care about his name, just his play on the field.

Great off-season, so far. I can’t complain. And trust me, complaining is one thing we do well in Philly :-)

We swept the Cowboys last year so I don’t even know why that one poster is talking about Ware. No one is scared of Ware.

Look how many people come on here to trash talk the Eagles because they’re jealous. I’d be pissed too if the team that just went 5-1 in the division last year fills the holes it needs to and still has a TON of cap while the rest of the division will struggle to sign its rookies. The division will be between the Eagles and Giants again with the Cowboys and Redskins being the jokes of the division like they have been for a few decades now.

The cream team. Every other poster sais “if he can stay healthy.” Thats a huge IF. He can’t. He’ll crap out in training camp, and then where will you be? If he was any kind of answer, the Bills would have made a huge effort to resign him. They didn’t. Thats all you need to know about him.

  104. swordsmenrule says: Apr 4, 2012 3:11 PM

You can’t replace one of the best 2 or 3 tackles in football with one of the best 2 or 3 tackles in football, all you can do is replace him with the best AVAILABLE guy. The Eagles did that today. He doesn’t need to be Jason Peters, the guy that played LT for the Bills last year will be fine. What is delusional about that Eagles haters? If nothing else, they won’t have to waste a high draft choice on a LT that isn’t ready, that makes it a good signing. The Eagles should contend in NFC East. Beyond that, who knows? I’m sure after the Eagles beat the Giants with Vince Young and Riley Cooper last year at the Meadowlands , the Giants fans didn’t think they were going to win the Super Bowl a month and a half later, but that’s what happened. We’re not delusional, the team has some holes, but the team is talented enough to contend and let’s see where it goes.

  112. andyreiddoublecheeseburger says: Apr 4, 2012 4:15 PM

Bad decision- Guess the Eagles think they’re getting Peters part deux. WRONG! This guy can’t play more than 3 games consecutively without getting hurt. Plus, he’s a soft run blocker who’d be better suited at right tackle than left. When you look at the Bills’ offseason- they resigned all of their free agents (including their long-snapper), but let this guy go into free agency without even making much of an effort to retain him. They didn’t seem to mind doling out 100 million for Williams; but thought little enough of Bell to try to get a deal done RED FLAG!

  113. amishrifle says: Apr 4, 2012 4:17 PM

Why is everyone liking this signing??? The Bills still have 10 million sitting around and would rather have Chris Hairston as their tackle than take Karl Malone’s kid…..He was basically a walking turnstile for his first few years when he wasn’t injured (the key word is when) and had an okay last year until….take a guess……he got injured again…..A risky signing unless you can back out real quick….

  114. janvanflac says: Apr 4, 2012 4:35 PM

“By the way…this is the second player who has changed his name going to the Eagles. CB Will Peterson changed his name to something else”

Aactually third…. Juqua Parker changed his last name from Thomas. That’s kind of a lot of name changes for one franchise. But at least there is no Ocho-whatever.

  115. nfceastfan says: Apr 4, 2012 4:49 PM

Eagles were fortunate to get a guy of this caliber this time of year after suffering a major blow when Peters went down. The timing was pure luck. If Peters got injured a week later he’d been gone. You guys that reply to these threads are flat-out funny.

  116. tombrookshire says: Apr 4, 2012 4:50 PM

If he can stay healthy, he’ll thrive in Howard Mudd’s offensive line system. Peters had his best year in this system.

When was the last time either team won one? Or how about when was the last team either team won a playoff game? Like I said. Both are jokes. You’re real quick to bring up the past when your team has been irrelevant for a couple decades.

  118. daysend564 says: Apr 4, 2012 5:35 PM

You guys still need to spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on someone to project as a LT. Peters will be 33 next year and coming off a ruptured achilles. He is going to lose his first step and quickness. He’ll likely need to move inside.

  122. andyb02 says: Apr 4, 2012 6:41 PM

    @daysend564

You said Peters will be 33 next year. He just turned 30 in January so he has some years left. He may lose a step but he will be a year and 1/2 removed from the injury by the time next season rolls around so as long as there are no setbacks, he should be ok to play right away. And yes Romo beat the Eagles 3 years ago in that wildcard game but I could really care less about that. That season really showed that McNabb couldn’t hack it anymore. Plus that was the only playoff win of Romo’s career I think. I’d rather have Vick, Manning, or RG3 before Romo. That guy’s a choke artist.

  123. phillyocmd says: Apr 4, 2012 6:49 PM

Let’s see…the birds sign Bell (to a who cares how long deal because they’re all front-loaded) leaving them enough cap space to resign McCoy to a long term deal and whatever they may have to negotiate if they decide to trade Samuels outright before the draft. It also leaves them in a position to draft the “best player available” – or who AR thinks is the best player available. I don’t love all their decisions but everybody b_tc_ing about them has not come up with a better strategy…oh yeah, because there isn’t one. Yeah, they’re so, so stupid aren’t they?

  124. MichaelEdits says: Apr 4, 2012 8:28 PM

I love how some Philly fans are calling this a great signing….How about you just draft Martin out of Stanford and you won’t have to worry about some scrub that nobody wanted for a month…..Come on now, even the Cardinals passed on this guy and they took you’re 2nd string qb and threw him a boatload of cash and their best cb….
