Getty ImagesLost in Tuesday’s unprecedented media event surrounding the arrival of the new Nike NFL uniforms was the fact that, except for the Seahawks, alternate jerseys and uniforms were not unveiled.
League spokesman Brian McCarthy tells PFT that there’s “no timetable” for the announcement of alternate uniforms, and that the teams determine when and how they choose to do it.
Dolphins cornerback Sean Smith disclosed last month a picture of the team’s alternate orange jersey, and both the Steelers and Rams have acknowledged possible changes to their alternate uniforms. The Jaguars also are believed to be planning a black third jersey.
Making the prospect of alternate uniforms more intriguing is the reality that more than a few teams use not only a third jersey but also a second helmet. For some, it’s an opportunity to turn the clock back. Now that Nike is involved, other teams could choose to fast forward to a more futuristic look.
I’m still trying to figure out whether that’s a good thing. And I’ll be right back with an answer; I need to go tell a pack of whipper-snappers to get off my lawn.

If this picture is any indication, it’s a terrible idea.
I think we have heard enough about what looks these 300 pound athletes will be sporting. Can we get back to football news?
Please tell me those Eagles throwbacks aren’t reappearing. Talk about hot garbage…
Why do you show a picture of an Eagles jersey that was worn as a commemorative? That is not an alternate.
The Jags have a had a black alternate for about 8 years now, and starting in 2013 it becomes their standard home uni.
Maybe the Bills will come out with a futuristic look:
Red Alternate Unis with the blue and white still prevalent.
I loved the “concept” uniforms that were released last year. I was extremely disappointed that they look identical, for the most part, to their current reebok uniforms. since the NFL wants to come out and say, “new, safer NFL”, why not change your uniforms to a more futuristic look too? -_-
Those Eagles throwbacks are the best.
The Nike jerseys look the same anyway except for Seahawks so I’m not going out to get a jersey just because it’s Nike. Would rather wait to see what the alternate jersey look like.
Even though they haven’t worn them in a few years, I’m hoping the Giants ditch the all-red jerseys and go back to their 80′s/90′s gear for at least a couple games.
The Patriots throwbacks are 100% better than what they currently wear
I hate the throwback uniforms for teams that have been wearing the same uniform since WWII. Nobody remembers them and they’re ugly.
PFT hates the Eagles and look for any opportunity to embarrass us (even though some Eagles executive did approve those awful threads, ha!). Honestly, why are we looking at the negatives? In my opinion, Nike did an awesome job with Seahawks and all the college teams. Why not use a picture of those as an example?
Why can’t the NFL find an alternate for Nike?
The NFL found an alt for NIKE for 10 years and look at all the uniforms that were screwed up. As for the Jaguars all black alt it was around in the old style from 02-08 and is coming back as an alt this season the current style. They haven’t had it for years, 2013 Black will replace Teal as primary.
They should have ALT unis. for Monday Night games.
Also, as someone who grew up in the 80′s in NYC, I really with the Jets would bring back those as ALT unis.
i hope the steelers are the same
Washington is going to an all PINK uniform trimmed in lace ………….
Steelers are changing.
Oh dear heavens … what team is that???? Yikes!!!
