Vikings sign Chris Carr

The Vikings have added another cornerback to the mix for the 2012 season.

Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports that the team has agreed to terms with free agent Chris Carr on a contract. Carr was cut by the Ravens before the start of free agency after a 2011 season marred by injuries. It’s the second recent cornerback signing -- they added Zack Bowman last week -- for a team that struggled badly at the position last year.

Carr played just nine games for the Ravens last season because of a back injury. He was an effective part of the defense in 2010, however, and he should earn a fair amount of playing time in the Vikings’ secondary packages if he’s healthy. Antoine Winfield and Chris Cook look like the starters right now, but there’s no clear impediment to Carr earning the nickel corner job.

That could change after the draft if the Vikings wind up getting themselves more help at corner, of course. For now, though, Carr looks like he’ll be part of the group trying to improve the productivity of the Vikings pass defense.
