Bobby Petrino in hot water at Arkansas

Allstate Sugar Bowl - Ohio State v Arkansas Getty Images

When Bobby Petrino walked out on the Falcons during the 2007 season to become the head coach at Arkansas, the widespread assessment in NFL circles was that Petrino was a man who could not be trusted. Everything that has happened this week bolsters that assessment.

Arkansas placed Petrino on administrative leave on Thursday night after it became clear that he had lied about the circumstances of a Sunday motorcycle accident.

Specifically, Petrino lied — and had Arkansas employees lie on his behalf — when he said he was alone on his motorcycle. In reality, a 26-year-old former Arkansas volleyball star who was just hired last week as an employee of the football program, Jessica Dorrell, was riding on his motorcycle with him. (Dorrell was not seriously hurt and did not need medical attention. Petrino was hospitalized but has since been released.)

Petrino issued a statement in which he seemed to blame his failure to be forthright on the fact that “I have been in constant pain, medicated,” but he did acknowledge that he was also motivated by not wanting what he described as “a previous inappropriate relationship” to become public.

Petrino’s private life is none of the public’s business. But if he has an “inappropriate relationship” with a football program employee, or if he hires someone with whom he previously had an “inappropriate relationship” to work for the football program, or if he has another Arkansas employee lie on his behalf — as he did early this week when he had a school spokesman release a statement saying he was alone at the time of the accident — that’s a serious problem. Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long was clearly upset when he announced that he placed Petrino on administrative leave Thursday night.

“We have high expectations for our coaches . . . certainly I’m disappointed,” Long said. “I brought him [Petrino] here.”

Long also described himself as “surprised” that Petrino lied. The players Petrino walked out on in Atlanta could have warned Long that Petrino can’t be trusted.

Amazing. If I were an old fat body like Petrino and I had some young hottie on the back of my bike, not only wouldn’t I lie about it I’d make sure the whole world knew! What a dope.

Again, this is why scholarships for athletes is bullcrap!!!!

Everyone makes hundreds of millions to billions off these players and when powerful people like coaches (WHOM MOST PLAYERS TRUST) get to abuse SO much power we let the coach STAY PAID!!!

    Paid leave???

They only abuse so much power because the athletic directors and presidents felt “hey! They’re great to golf, mingle, and fine and dine with let’s give ‘em coaches EVERYTHING!!!” But they act absent-minded and eventually encounter the fact of “oh crap, we have to deal with the agent!!! But as long as we’re winning nothing can go wrong!!!!”

When Petrino is one of the most overpaid and hated coaches in NCAA Football, he is allowed to act that stupid and ruthless!!!! What sad times we live in!!!

  33. tiger7575 says: Apr 6, 2012 7:40 AM

OK folks, he’s married, she’s hot and engaged, his kid is on his staff, why shouldn’t others on his staff be

  35. hank10 says: Apr 6, 2012 7:50 AM

I would say his private life is the public’s business as long as he is employed by a university which receives nearly half of its funding from the taxpayers of Arkansas.

  36. rajbais says: Apr 6, 2012 7:51 AM

Although, I feel that it is unfair that there is a “relationship policy” because when there have been NCAA coaches that I had DUI’s or extra-marital affairs he’s in trouble for not disclosing details about a relationship???

Please have issue with this if there’s a ban on relationships at work or if Petrino has one with a student or someone who is underage!!!!

Arkansas I knew what it was getting with this idiot!!!! He had a shady pass and now it has come to haunt the university!!!

    $4 million for a non-BCS coach???

  41. bluepike says: Apr 6, 2012 8:03 AM

Long should have asked the Atlanta players about Petrino? Are these the same Atlanta players that thought anyone can make a mistake and that Michael Vick deserved a second chance – but wanted Petrino to be pilloried?

  42. pastabelly says: Apr 6, 2012 8:10 AM

These guys don’t even come close to the college basketball coaches. Those guys redefine the term scumbag. The funniest is Calipari. What are the odds that Kentucky’s championship will be vacated just like just about every Final Four appearance this scumbag coach has been involved in. Move on to Mr. Sex, liar, liar himself, Rick Pitino, and then onto Jim Harrick, and then to Jim Calhoun, Dana Kirk, Bill Fisher, and that list goes on and on. Universities keep hiring these guys because of the money they bring to the schools.

I don’t know why anyone includes Bill Belichick with these clowns. That whole spygate thing was a bit of a joke. It was stupid. It would have been okay if the Patriots videotaped from their booth in the stadium under the rules. It just wasn’t legal from the stands. This stuff is still going on, just not from the stands. Anyone equating stealing signals in baseball or football with these sex, pay to injure, illegal payments, and bribery scandals is just soft.

I always get a kick out of it when lawyers or their surrogates call out other people for ethical lapses. That said, when I first heard this, I thought he had a 16 year old on the back of his motorcycle.
The woman is 26 years old.
Did they catch them in a motel room? No.
He did tell a lie about her role in the accident. But she wasn’t seriously injured. How many of you out there had a relationship with someone you work with? Lets not act like this is Sodom and Gomorrah here.
Ok, a creepy old guy is likely getting it on with a woman half his age. Creepy, yup. Illegal? No. She might not have been the best hire in the world, but this kind of stuff is hardly new.
I don’t know if he’s married, but the real justice here might be the spouse(if there is one) and would have something to do with a frying pan.
Another example of the Internet age in full bloom. This is really a ‘nothing’ story.

    —————————————————-
hodag54501, the reason this is not a “nothing” story is because the chick half his age was a subordinate, which opens up the university to all kinds of civil liabilities. We know the relationship was improper because he said so himself, so what if all of a sudden it goes south (for instance the classic, “I don’t want to be the side piece anymore, leave your wife)? Then the university has a potential sexual harrassment suit on their hands. Trust me, his boss doesn’t care about him cheating on his wife (he is married), but they do care about him dipping his pen in the company ink because that could cost them money. Bad for business.

Well, first it already came out the Arthur Blank and Petrino had agreed to mutual part ways until the vick thing happend, Petrino re-niged and made it out like Petrino was the “snake in the grass”

Then….you can ruin the integrity of the college game and all you have to do is move on to the pros, a different (sometimes better) school, or just “self-impose” a suspension and you’re A-ok.

Get some strange though, and you should be fired!!! Get out of here. Let him and his family deal with that, it’s got nothing to do with the game and that’s what i’m here for. All you celebrity gossip people can go on to some tabloid website and talk about this.

Big difference between NY, Boston and Arkansas. If this happened to Bellichuk and Rex Ryan, it would be news for a day or two and just disappear. In Arkansas it’s a major crisis.

Bellichuk got sued for cheating with the wife of another man. Most people never even heard about this. Rex Ryan is a swinger who like to watch guys do his wife and posted fuzzy naked pictures of her on the internet. Just Rex being Rex.

Bobby Potrino gives a motorcycle ride to a hottie and it may have been an entirely platonic thing. Major crisis.

Because the Arkansas administration knows football is the financial bellcow, and Petrino is a winner, here’s my prediction when September 1 comes around:

    1)Petrino is the coach.
2)Any lawsuit will be settled out of court with Petrino paying $$$$.

The rest is all thunder and no lightning, as all us moonshinin’ rednecks would say.
