Bobby Petrino in hot water at Arkansas

When Bobby Petrino walked out on the Falcons during the 2007 season to become the head coach at Arkansas, the widespread assessment in NFL circles was that Petrino was a man who could not be trusted. Everything that has happened this week bolsters that assessment.

Arkansas placed Petrino on administrative leave on Thursday night after it became clear that he had lied about the circumstances of a Sunday motorcycle accident.

Specifically, Petrino lied — and had Arkansas employees lie on his behalf — when he said he was alone on his motorcycle. In reality, a 26-year-old former Arkansas volleyball star who was just hired last week as an employee of the football program, Jessica Dorrell, was riding on his motorcycle with him. (Dorrell was not seriously hurt and did not need medical attention. Petrino was hospitalized but has since been released.)

Petrino issued a statement in which he seemed to blame his failure to be forthright on the fact that “I have been in constant pain, medicated,” but he did acknowledge that he was also motivated by not wanting what he described as “a previous inappropriate relationship” to become public.

Petrino’s private life is none of the public’s business. But if he has an “inappropriate relationship” with a football program employee, or if he hires someone with whom he previously had an “inappropriate relationship” to work for the football program, or if he has another Arkansas employee lie on his behalf — as he did early this week when he had a school spokesman release a statement saying he was alone at the time of the accident — that’s a serious problem. Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long was clearly upset when he announced that he placed Petrino on administrative leave Thursday night.

“We have high expectations for our coaches . . . certainly I’m disappointed,” Long said. “I brought him [Petrino] here.”

Long also described himself as “surprised” that Petrino lied. The players Petrino walked out on in Atlanta could have warned Long that Petrino can’t be trusted.

  1. Amazing. If I were an old fat body like Petrino and I had some young hottie on the back of my bike, not only wouldn’t I lie about it I’d make sure the whole world knew! What a dope.

  2. I cant say the words on here that i think about this guy so i”ll just say that i dislike him very much.

  3. Absolutely beautiful. This was inevitable. If you live a certain way, you will expose yourself one way or another at some point.

  4. I bet some ex-Dolphins players are asking why couldn’t this have happened to Nick Saban.

  5. Did Bobby ask her to yell ” roll tide”?…oh snap that was a different coach, damn!

These guys are all the same, they just coach for different colleges

  6. Deanvernonwormer….Don’t forget about Belichick. A lot of immoral men that are head coaches. Throw Jimmy Johnson in there also, Rats.

  7. Whew! I was worried there for a second.

I thought the “inapropriate relationship with someone in the football program” was one of his teams players. That was close.

  8. Arkansas could compete for a national championship and sec title with Tyler Wilson returning. What a dunce. To say nothing of his poor family.

  9. “Its the lie that always takes them down”

  10. Long also described himself as “surprised” that Petrino lied. The players Petrino walked out on in Atlanta could have warned Long that Petrino can’t be trusted.

I’m surprised the AD was surprised Petrino lied. Once a lying dirtbag, always a lying dirtbag.

  11. Again, this is why scholarships for athletes is bullcrap!!!!

Everyone makes hundreds of millions to billions off these players and when powerful people like coaches (WHOM MOST PLAYERS TRUST) get to abuse SO much power we let the coach STAY PAID!!!

    Paid leave???

They only abuse so much power because the athletic directors and presidents felt “hey! They’re great to golf, mingle, and fine and dine with let’s give ’em coaches EVERYTHING!!!” But they act absent-minded and eventually encounter the fact of “oh crap, we have to deal with the agent!!! But as long as we’re winning nothing can go wrong!!!!”

When Petrino is one of the most overpaid and hated coaches in NCAA Football, he is allowed to act that stupid and ruthless!!!! What sad times we live in!!!

  12. OK folks, he’s married, she’s hot and engaged, his kid is on his staff, why shouldn’t others on his staff be
“on his staff” IT’S ARKANSAS!! What do you expect?
It’s not the land of culture…..like say West Virginia !

  13. I would say his private life is the public’s business as long as he is employed by a university which receives nearly half of its funding from the taxpayers of Arkansas.

  14. Although, I feel that it is unfair that there is a “relationship policy” because when there have been NCAA coaches that I had DUI’s or extra-marital affairs he’s in trouble for not disclosing details about a relationship???

Please have issue with this if there’s a ban on relationships at work or if Petrino has one with a student or someone who is underage!!!!

Arkansas I knew what it was getting with this idiot!!!! He had a shady pass and now it has come to haunt the university!!!

    $4 million for a non-BCS coach???

  15. Pootang will always get yuh, its never a matter of if, but when Pootang will get you in trouble! Its always worse when the Pootang looks like a Horse-Face.

  16. Who cares if this guy is cheating in his wife? This is not PFT Nation’s problem. This is Petrino’s problem. She’s a grown woman. He’s a gross, puffy, greasy, disgusting, potato sack of a man. They have to answer to their loved ones. They don’t have to answer to us.

  17. I’m sure Petrino just assumed that it was alright as a public figure to have inappropriate relations in AK and lie about it. After all Billy Bob Clinton did (Jennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Dolly Browning) and most of you pot smoking dummies on here still voted for him.

  18. Long should have asked the Atlanta players about Petrino? Are these the same Atlanta players that thought anyone can make a mistake and that Michael Vick deserved a second chance – but wanted Petrino to be pilloried?

  19. These guys don’t even come close to the college basketball coaches. Those guys redefine the term scumbag. The funniest is Calipari. What are the odds that Kentucky’s championship will be vacated just like just about every Final Four appearance this scumbag coach has been involved in. Move on to Mr. Sex, liar, liar himself, Rick Pitino, and then onto Jim Harrick, and then to Jim Calhoun, Dana Kirk, Bill Fisher, and that list goes on and on. Universities keep hiring these guys because of the money they bring to the schools.

I don’t know why anyone includes Bill Belichick with these clowns. That whole spygate thing was a bit of a joke. It was stupid. It would have been okay if the Patriots videotaped from their booth in the stadium under the rules. It just wasn’t legal from the stands. This stuff is still going on, just not from the stands. Anyone equating stealing signals in baseball or football with these sex, pay to injure, illegal payments, and bribery scandals is just soft.

  20. “We have high expectations for our coaches . . . certainly I’m disappointed,” Long said. “I brought him [Petrino] here.”

What the hell did you think you were getting?

The man is a complete POS.

Some people can’t be trusted: Nick Saban, Bill Parcells, Bobby Pertrino, Bernie Madoff etc. etc.
    ===================

1 from that list is a multiple National Champion, another a multiple Super Bowl winner and yet another made billions for shareholders.

The world could care less if said “untrusted” people brought them financial success or championships.

    Welcome to the real world.

  22. What this demonstrates is that Petrino’s first instinct when confronted with potential trouble is to lie. He previously demonstrated that he’s also quick to run away from trouble. What a fine example he sets for his players….

  24. I always get a kick out of it when lawyers or their surrogates call out other people for ethical lapses. That said, when I first heard this, I thought he had a 16 year old on the back of his motorcycle.
The woman is 26 years old.
Did they catch them in a motel room? No.
He did tell a lie about her role in the accident. But she wasn’t seriously injured. How many of you out there had a relationship with someone you work with? Lets not act like this is Sodom and Gomorrah here.
Ok, a creepy old guy is likely getting it on with a woman half his age. Creepy, yup. Illegal? No. She might not have been the best hire in the world, but this kind of stuff is hardly new.
I don’t know if he’s married, but the real justice here might be the spouse(if there is one) and would have something to do with a frying pan.
Another example of the Internet age in full bloom. This is really a ‘nothing’ story.

  25. At Arkansas they teach you in the Masters program of business…. Sleep with the boss thats how you get a head… no pun in tended

Nice work Bobby hitting a tasty looking gal…. bet she has man hands…

  26. @swagjag:
Right, because I’m sure you’re busy having threeways with supermodels every weekend right? Thanks for the input, Casanova.

  27. Petrino: that is a Bold Faced LIE !!!!! Jessie’s 25, not 26. Hef’s banging his 18 yr old employees and ur not trying to fire him!!! Let me heal in peace!!

  28. Another example of the Internet age in full bloom. This is really a ‘nothing’ story.
    —————————————————-
hodag54501, the reason this is not a “nothing” story is because the chick half his age was a subordinate, which opens up the university to all kinds of civil liabilities. We know the relationship was improper because he said so himself, so what if all of a sudden it goes south (for instance the classic, “I don’t want to be the side piece anymore, leave your wife)? Then the university has a potential sexual harrassment suit on their hands. Trust me, his boss doesn’t care about him cheating on his wife (he is married), but they do care about him dipping his pen in the company ink because that could cost them money. Bad for business.

  29. Who cares. Love how everyone thinks he is such a dirt bag for this. I’m sure half of you people have never lied to stay out of trouble. DIRT BAGS

  30. Hodag, u must sell moonshine for a living for if u see nothing wrong here u r a true redneck. Not only is Petrno married with 4 kids, Jessica is engaged to one of petrino’s coaches. She was just hired by him last month, a big no no as well. Petrino’s also had a UA spookesman to LIE for him as to who was on the motorcycle with him. These are all fire able offenses and it will go down for this would look bad for Jeff Long since he was the one who brought him here. Bye Bye Bobby.

  31. Belichick went after a divorcee when he himself was
divorced, last time I checked that was legal.

  32. Look, he was just trying to “mentor” her! He started a new variant of the Big Brother Program, its called the “I’m old, fat and gross…but I’m the head coach of Arkansas Program”.

  33. In a few select ways Bobby Petrino brought some good to the Falcons in 2007. His brother Paul was a WR coach who helped Roddy White finally up his game from the poor dropsy-do days. Roddy was nearing bust status until strict disciplinarian PP showed up and whipped him into shape.

  34. @breadslicer says: Apr 6, 2012 10:13 AM

Arkansas and Petrino have always deserved each other.

    Care to elaborate?

  35. Bobby P, where do we start.

Well, first it already came out the Arthur Blank and Petrino had agreed to mutual part ways until the vick thing happend, Petrino re-niged and made it out like Petrino was the “snake in the grass”

Then….you can ruin the integrity of the college game and all you have to do is move on to the pros, a different (sometimes better) school, or just “self-impose” a suspension and you’re A-ok.

Get some strange though, and you should be fired!!! Get out of here. Let him and his family deal with that, it’s got nothing to do with the game and that’s what i’m here for. All you celebrity gossip people can go on to some tabloid website and talk about this.

Know your facts, idiot. He divorced his wife of 26 years AFTER having gotten caught cheating with the wife of another man. NO ONE in that situation was divorced until AFTER the sh*t hit the fan.

  38. “I have been in constant pain, medicated,”

Were you wearing leathers? I bet you weren’t. Safety first. Riding a bike is dangerous, and if you don’t bother to suit up first, you deserve to be in pain.

I’m a Pats fan too, and I know that BB is hardly going to be mistaken for Mother Theresa anytime soon but I do agree. What’s laughable is that Borges thinks BB & Saban are two peas in a pod. Then again, Borges is a plagiarizer who worked for the Herald which we KNOW has high ethical standards (insert eyeroll here).

  40. As a Falcons fan, does an offseason get any better than this? Saints in hot water, their “championship*” tarnished, and Bobby Petrino’s Karmic retribution. This is fantastic.

  41. Big difference between NY, Boston and Arkansas. If this happened to Bellichuk and Rex Ryan, it would be news for a day or two and just disappear. In Arkansas it’s a major crisis.

Bellichuk got sued for cheating with the wife of another man. Most people never even heard about this. Rex Ryan is a swinger who like to watch guys do his wife and posted fuzzy naked pictures of her on the internet. Just Rex being Rex.

Bobby Potrino gives a motorcycle ride to a hottie and it may have been an entirely platonic thing. Major crisis.

  42. Petrino lost 2 games last year, to both teams that appeared in the BCS Championship Game. They’ll get over this as soon as the news cycle moves on. In the meantime, they’ll fake outrage and anger.

  43. UA has a reputation for denying inside information to the local media and daring them to face ostracizing from the administration and the hostility of a Hog-loyal public if they find something out and spill the beans. Maybe the folks on The Hill thought the national media would play by the same rules. Maybe they’ve learned something.

Typical year for Falcons fans. The offseason is better than the regular season.

  46. I don’t think Long has any other choice but to fire Petrino. Too much of a liability with her on the staff. He fires her and keeps Petrino that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen. Both of them on the same staff just isn’t an option. Gus Malzahn, time to come home.

  47. When will people learn that despite the success of teaching monkeys to ride bulls you just can never teach a weasel to ride a motorcycle.

  48. Click the link. She’s not even hot, Petrino. C’mon man! Go big or go home! In all seriousness, though, is anyone that surprised by this? Petrino is a scumbag and everyone knew it. If my son is lucky enough to play college ball, there are some coaches that will not be considered. Petrino would be near or at the top of that list.

  49. Hodag, u must sell moonshine for a living for if u see nothing wrong here u r a true redneck.

At least I know enough of the English language to know that “u” is spelled “you” by people with an education.
That said, dude, it’s called SCALE. I think he did something incredibly stupid, but contrast this to what the Saints have done.
Because the Arkansas administration knows football is the financial bellcow, and Petrino is a winner, here’s my prediction when September 1 comes around:

    1)Petrino is the coach.
2)Any lawsuit will be settled out of court with Petrino paying $$$$.

The rest is all thunder and no lightning, as all us moonshinin’ rednecks would say.
