Raiders reel in Dave Tollefson

The truly big money has long been spent, but the free-agent market is still open.  On Friday, former Giants defensive end Dave Tollefson agreed to terms with the Raiders, according to Steve Corkran of Bay Area News Group.

A six-year veteran who appeared in all 20 Giants games in 2011 with two starts, Tollefson began his career with the Packers in 2006.  Green Bay and Seattle were also in the hunt to sign him.

Though the Raiders under new coach Dennis Allen haven’t officially declared whether the defense will use a 4-3 or 3-4 alignment, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly has said that, based on the first week of the offseason program, it appears that the Raiders will run a a 4-3.  That means Tollefson most likely will remain a defensive end.

He also will be coming home.  And the Walnut Creek, California native returns to the Bay Area with a pair of Super Bowl rings.

Good for Dave, he was a solid backup and enjoyed watching his effort.

  3. zombiefrankenstein says: Apr 6, 2012 9:10 PM

Not a big name by any means, but really a solid pickup. Cool that he gets to play where he grew up to.

Man . . . Reggie seems to be slowly building a Highly competitive team. Love it!

Thanks for 5 solid years Dave. Enjoy those 2 rings!!

  7. ohenry78 says: Apr 6, 2012 9:16 PM

Good for him. He was pretty decent when he was in GB, it just so happened that the Packers had Aaron Kampman in his prime and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamilla at the other DE position (who was still decent at that time) and there wasn’t room for him on the roster.

    Best of luck in Oakland.

Solid pick up to be part of the D-Line rotation and can also play LB in a pinch. High character, high motor guy who adds good depth to an already good D-line. Raiders are quietly replacing overpaid and/or underproductive players (i.e., Winmbley, Routt, Scott) with solid guys that know who to play their positions.

All this defense needs to do is be mediocre and the Raiders win the West and are a play-off team. Every move Oakland is making tells me it’s going to happen.

  14. ch8878 says: Apr 6, 2012 9:36 PM

Welcome back to the only Nation the Raider Nation.

He was swiped off the Raiders practice squad by the Giants now hes back with the Raiders.

    Dear AFC West,

Hope you enjoyed it while it lasted.

  16. sweded775 says: Apr 6, 2012 9:41 PM

Walnut Creek, fine boxing town, amateur n pro. Freakin sweeet he’s going to play for the raiders.

  17. masterblaster78 says: Apr 6, 2012 9:54 PM

Great pick up. I was wondering what happened to him. He just disappeared only to reappear in a Raider uniform. McKenzie is doing a good job so far of putting a team in place. It may not be this year, but I can now see light at the end of the tunnel especially when the Raiders will be able to use the draft picks instead of trading them away. Hope he works good with the rest of the team. Welcome to the “BLACK HOLE”

  18. InFact says: Apr 6, 2012 9:55 PM

Why sign for a small amount of $$ more with Oakland when you could play for a potential Super Bowl contender in Green Bay?

I guess the answer is that when your career merely has 2-4 years left, you’ll jump at the extra moolah at the expense of playing with a lousy team.

  19. sagatti says: Apr 6, 2012 9:57 PM

From the Castle to the DUNGEON…. Welcome to Jokeland…. Home of the felons and misfits, proudly serving you since 1960… Now entering its 30th year without a SUPERBOWL….

  20. slickster35 says: Apr 6, 2012 9:58 PM

Congrats on the addition of the worst DE on the world champs roster. It’s like the faiders have turned into a minor league team.

  21. jgrange says: Apr 6, 2012 10:14 PM

Well, the Raiders had injury problems last year on their defensive line so adding a guy who is durable and can start when needed is a pretty good signing. Shaughnessy and Houston should continue to develop and he can teach them a thing or two about being better pros. Raiders defensive line when healthy looks good on paper. They just have to stay on the field.

  22. trickybastard says: Apr 6, 2012 10:20 PM

    Too bad flacco sucks

  23. kchi55 says: Apr 6, 2012 10:28 PM

I’m sure reuniting with Mike Waufle had something to do with it too. Nice pick-up by the Raiders.

  24. njkid says: Apr 6, 2012 10:39 PM

Love you Dave!! This league needs guys like you who go there and get the job done with grit and don’t complain, you will always be a Giant in my heart God Luck in Oakland and God Bless.

  33. gcsuk says: Apr 6, 2012 11:12 PM

Sorry to see Tolley go. High motor guy. Sure he didn’t have incredible sack numbers, but he always seemed to be involved in the play. Depth like that is hard to replace. A solid pick-up, Raiders fans (despite what others think).

  34. rcpj22 says: Apr 6, 2012 11:12 PM

I guess already having 2 rings is a good reason to grab an opportunity to go back home…even if it means playing on a mediocre team! His choice and he earned that right.

What a kook you are slick. Adding Tollefson is a great move by Big Reg. The Raiders will be backhanding the rest of the AFC soon enough.

  42. lilcuzzy says: Apr 7, 2012 1:53 AM

McKenzie brings in another saavy veteran from a winning program . The Raiders will ask him to do nothing more than what he did in NY. He will contribute for sure because thats just the type of player he is, Raiders looking like they can contend for this division title now ! Just need to add LB Depth and maybe another TE. I absolutely love every move McKenzie has made, imagine the talent that is going to be on this roster in another 2 or 3 years. SUPER BOWL CHIP AINT FAR OFF FOLKS !!

  43. tangysizzl says: Apr 7, 2012 1:53 AM

I think Tollefson signed with the Raiders instead of the Packers for a couple of reasons that have nothing to do with money.

Playing DE in a 4-3 for Oakland instead of OLB in a 3-4 had to be appealing to him and of course theres no place like home. Gotta be hard to go from living in a place like NY to tiny GB. California sounds like a much better option to me.

Really dude Raiders have plenty of rings.

    @tripx99
First off Giants stole him from the Raiders practice squad and Gibril Wilson just flat out sucked.

You guys go troll somewhere else.

  46. thetwilightsown says: Apr 7, 2012 5:05 AM

Like another poster said, wouldn’t be the same without the haters. Gibril Wilson and Kevin Boss played on a completely different team and under a burned out regime – we’ll really miss their mediocre production, I’m sure. Rest of the AFC West can kick rocks, we ain’t what we have been… But everyone will see soon enough. Again, hope you enjoyed having us as a doormat while it lasted.

Unlike the Chiefs, Bronco’s and the Chargers, we are worldwide and we are strong.

LOL @ Raider fan getting excited. “Dave Tollefson? Nice! Wow, we are building a competitive team! Maybe next we can sign John Smithson or Joe Williamington!! I am excited!!!” Hahaha.

    Lol Raiders

  50. slowclyde86 says: Apr 7, 2012 10:00 AM

All the offseason salary dumps were smart and necessary, but this is going to be very long year for the raiders. A very long year. Adding a solid but unremarkable end with no draft picks and a dramatic drop off in over all talent from what was a mediocre team = a 2012 poor record. Yet hope springs eternal.

Good solid move. This is a whole new world for us Raider fans. Its been a long time since we’ve seen smart, logical personnel moves from the Raider front office. I guess I can watch the draft without cringing with every pick.

  53. vikescry1 says: Apr 7, 2012 10:39 AM

how was tollefson already a raider? i’m sorry but i’m pretty sure he was drafted by the packers and the giants took him from our practice squad. either way good luck dave.

Congrats on the addition of the worst DE on the world champs roster. It’s like the faiders have turned into a minor league team.

A more than adequate replacement for Trevor Scott. The Queefs might have a small window to get something done this season while McKenzie adjusts the roster and the cap, if they can find a legitimate quarterback.

  55. rickyrich14 says: Apr 7, 2012 11:05 AM

Tollefson was released by the Raiders in 2007. Al Davis actually regretted the move later. But you know Al had to keep his scholarship players AKA height-weight-speed, draft pick busts as long as he could to prove to the media he made the right picks. No more of that in Oakland. Reggie wants football players. It’s so refreshing as a fan you can’t even imagine. Every year we go through the same thing every offseason Al releasing all the football players and keeping “his fast guys”. No more!!!

With that said, RIP Al Davis.

  56. pixelito says: Apr 7, 2012 12:20 PM

As a Giants fan I’m very happy for him…. He was very productive with minimal playing time, and I always felt he’d be capable of handling a bigger role.

    Good luck.

  57. gh0sthawk says: Apr 7, 2012 1:04 PM

Great addition for Oakland’s defense. I had been hoping that Seattle was quietly making this guy a Seahawk. We brought him in for a workout a few weeks ago and it’s been silent ever since.

Good job, Oakland. Solid rotational DE. Who knows, though, if given an opportunity to start.. he may surprise some people.

  58. yournuts says: Apr 7, 2012 1:20 PM

Dave, Giant fan here that lives in Walnut Creek. Thanks for all you did for the Gman in our Super Bowl year. Welcome back home. Oakland is a good fit for you and you will be a great addition for Raider Nation. Good Luck.

  59. mark916 says: Apr 7, 2012 3:45 PM

Any fool who keeps comparing the new Raiders regime with the one from years past is making a big mistake. Tollefson will be in a new defensive scheme that he fits and so will the offense, which Palmer will be great in. Totally different vibe and direction haters. Get used to the Raiders being top of the division again. Raiders Rule.

  60. mark916 says: Apr 7, 2012 7:27 PM

Raider Nation 5 Super Bowls and 3 wins. When was the last time the donkeys were in the SB? The dolts? Oh wow the queefs? Raiders the only AFC West team to be in the SB in the last decade. Raiders rule, the rest drool. Raiders Forever!!!

  61. giantbeatles says: Apr 10, 2012 8:44 AM

The Bay area may be Dave’s original home, but his current one is the same as mine – Omaha, NE!
