Chris Kluwe, Visanthe Shiancoe go off on Gregg Williams

yahoo_greggwilliamsskins Getty Images

Two players on the Vikings team that lost to the Saints in the NFC Championship Game — a game that has been much discussed in the Saints’ bounty scandal — are taking shots at former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Chris Kluwe and Visanthe Shiancoe had a lengthy exchange on Twitter about Williams, and neither one of them buys the “everybody does it” defense of Williams.

“Are you [expletive] kidding me? What kind of neanderthal message does that send,” Kluwe wrote.

Added Schiancoe, “what do u expect from a neanderthal?” Shiancoe also suggested that without the Saints taking cheap shots at Vikings quarterback Brett Favre, “we could have a ring right now.”

As for the idea that what Williams said was standard for NFL locker rooms, Kluwe took issue with that.

“I see a lot of people asking about the context of the Gregg Williams audio clip as it relates to how other teams talk,” Kluwe wrote. “I will enlighten! 90% of what he said was standard rah rah motivational stuff. Hit guys hard, get him going sideways, etc.; all fine and heard before. The part that is an issue is the other 10%, where he specifically talks about targeting ACL’s, twisting guys’ ankles in the pile, and trying to hit a concussion victim in the head again. That’s why Goodell has to come down so hard on this; you don’t want that spreading.”

Williams won’t be able to spread it anymore. His coaching career is likely over.

banned for life, b interesting to see if anyone hires him for a tv gig

still think anyone that his players were instructed for bounty should get a chance for payback

Not a specific Vikings fan but I would agree that they got robbed against the taints* but so did the Cards that year in the playoffs against the Taints.* I also think the officials in that game should be suspended as even a blind person could’ve called that game better.

As a Packer fan I have agree with Schiancoe and grudgingly admit that without the abusive hitting on Favre the Vikings win that game ….Williams probably saved the Pack from the Ultimate humiliation of Purple getting to SB with our guy of 16 years!!

What everyone is forgetting in this audio tape released is Payton, loomis are just as guilty here. It’s Payton’s team he’s the fall guy, so if the AINTS organization has any class ( which their fans and franchise don’t) they should fire Payton and loomis. All three idiots should be banned for life. It’s disgusting that anyone defends any of these 3 stooges and anyone who does is just as much of a piece of s&@t as that organization. I commend the gentlemen who blew the whistle on this tape being released ( funny on the day of the appeals) I bet any money the nfl heard this tape before anyone and they just decided to go along with the release to make it stick. In a way I feel bad for any AINTS fans who have any class and want action taken, because they and the other 31 nfl teams and fans know their championship is an absolute muck, tainted joke forever. Just like Barry bonds asterisk 73 homers in sports, this one will be right up their with him.

Who dat nation, you a dirty piece of s&@t nation and you should be disgusted of your franchise!!!!!

I say tie Gregg willliams up and use him as a tackle dummy in practices, ship him around to each NFL teams training camps and have at it on him, sees how it feels!!!

  10. crabboil says: Apr 7, 2012 9:16 AM

Jared Allen knocked Matt Schaub out of the game by hitting him in the knees. Twice. Wasn’t Jared the most fined player that year? What was it, $90,000?

Brett Favre gains the respect of his new team mates when he hits Eugene Wilson with an illegal crack back block in the knees. In preseason.

Quit crying. You’re just reinforcing the Viking stereotype.

If the NFL took away the Super Bowl Championship from the Saints…

That would mean that Reggie Bush would have won and lost a Heisman, NCAA National championship, and a Super Bowl.

  12. nagidac says: Apr 7, 2012 9:21 AM

I don’t believe that he is banned for life. Goodell is a sucker for comeback stories, but now that this audio has come out, it’ll probably be longer than he may have thought, but I’ll guess after 2 years, he will reinstate Williams.

  15. mikeyhigs says: Apr 7, 2012 9:23 AM

What Greg Williams said was despicable, but I still don’t believe that this had much effect on the way the players played. Even in that NFC Championship game, there was only one hit on Favre that deserved a flag (and there were only 2 flags thrown all game on Favre hits). It was the High Low hit when 2 defenders hit him. And even that can be seen as 2 defenders just getting to the QB at the same time.

I am not a Saints fan, but my point is, if the players were truly targeting other players for injury, then where are the injuries? Or the flags?

Some players don’t need a bounty to make big hits. Hungry rookies looking to make a name. Brian Dawkins. Cortland Finegan. Donte. Whither. Adrian Wilson. Guys who want to get paid. What really roasts my rump were the commentators who would credit Gregg Williams for his schemes. I hate when commentators kiss coaches butt and don’t know what they are talking about. Williams needed bounties to be effective because he failed with his schemes in countless other cities

Gregg Williams is an easy target now but Visanthe must have forgotten it was the Bills Arthur Moats, hungry rookie, who took out Brett Favre who wasn’t taking the Vikings to a Superbowl.

  19. eyeh8goodell says: Apr 7, 2012 9:38 AM

Excuses, Excuses. I don’t recall much in the way of yellow laundry being thrown around for those hits on the Brat Favre. So no, Vikings players and fans, you wouldn’t have a ring right now. The Colts would’ve tore you up in the SB anyway.

  20. duanethomas says: Apr 7, 2012 9:38 AM

If Favre doesn’t throw a stupid pick they probably win the game. Leonard Little, Gary Rodgers, Ray Lewis, Adam Jones, etc all played in the NFL after their crimes ans suspensions….why not Williams?

The only part of the tape that wasn’t S.O.P. in the NFL was the ACL part. He was basicially calling Crabtree and Williams little bishes who if hit hard they would fold. The Giants thought the samething and it turned out to be true. If a player is coming off an injury as a defense you have to make him decide if he wants it by hard hits. Crabtree and Williams did not against the Giants. Sapp needs to shut up and manage his money better and Carter needs to just shut up as he is a liar who played for Williams mentor Buddy Ryan….and he never heard of such a thing???

  21. kingpel says: Apr 7, 2012 9:42 AM

Yeah. But you dont, so suck it up and quit crying.

Someone tell Visanthe that Childress sending 12 in the huddle with 19 seconds to go in the NFCCG does not earn you a ring in any league.

Not only are the Vikings fans big babies but so is their punter and pansy tight end.

  24. jackntorres says: Apr 7, 2012 9:50 AM

  25. supergruby says: Apr 7, 2012 9:59 AM

  26. timsmooth says: Apr 7, 2012 10:00 AM

The reason u don’t have a ring isn’t cause of cheap shots..there was none no flags were thrown… It’s because Bret did what he always do when the game is on the line in the playoffs… Throws a interception. So blame Bret for not runnin for a 1st down not a fire defensive speech by a defensive coordinator. I laugh at you loosers…LMMFAO

  27. twodat says: Apr 7, 2012 10:09 AM

  28. crabboil says: Apr 7, 2012 10:17 AM

    Thejuddstir-

The Cardinals got completely blown out of the water in 2009. How exactly did they get robbed? Because of a perfectly legal block on Warner?

And don’t blame the Saints because the Vikings couldn’t hold on to the ball, couldn’t play special teams to save their lives, couldn’t count to twelve, and didn’t realize that their wide receivers were wearing purple and white, not black and gold.

  29. sgtr0c says: Apr 7, 2012 10:20 AM

Every little sound bit that has come out of anyone that has anything to do with the Saints is, “We are really sorry, but…….”. They got caught three years ago, they lied when asked if they did it, and proof came out three years later they were still doing it. They are busted, that is it, they had their day in court and lied, you are being punished. Doesn’t mean Godell has something against the Saints, they really cheated to win the SB, it happened, deal

  30. kronix7 says: Apr 7, 2012 10:40 AM

    “because” or ” ’cause”
“Brett (two t’s) did what he always DOES…”
“there WERE none, no flags were thrown…”
    “Throws AN interception…”
    “runnin’ ”
    “FIERY defensive speech…”

And you can ‘LYMFAO’ all you want, but the word is “losers” – not “loosers.”

    Just sayin’.

i despise what williams did, but where were all these strong opinions when harrison was going at deckers knee to prove a point. how about screaming at running backs who are known for chopping, barely a peep was made when stevie took out eric berry. while they may be different why is one worse than the other, the simple answer is publicity. in two years when Williams is forgiven and back in the league cough vick cough, these same players will play for him and say he deserves a second chance all the while utilizing an us against the world mentality just like the saints did.

Way to sound like an ignorant fool who knows nothing about the game of football.

Anyone who watched the Saints Vikings game KNOWS that Vikings DOMINATED on both offense and defense.

What was it close to 200-250 yards of total offense for the saints and near 500 for the Vikings.

Why don’t you go play football and see if you think you play as well against people who are literally trying to physically assault you, a.k.a CHEAT.

In that last interception Brett threw, he COULD have run the 10 yards (and more) if he didn’t have an ankle the size of a purple cantelope. But since he was illegally, feloniously attacked in an obviously unnacceptable way, was unable to do so.

Shank hits it on the head. If NFL Films ever makes a Missing Rings out of that year, it should include the cheating of the Saints and this whole scandal, to prove who REALLY earned a trip to the Super Bowl.

Also, even with all those Saints defenders PURPOSELY TRYING physically harm Brett, all of them together were STILL unable to knock a 40 year old man out of the game. How pathetic.

As a Vikes fan I clearly remember the refs not doing a good job. They didn’t make the calls that were necessary. That being said the Vikes turned the ball over 5 times. More importantly the coaching staff blew it with 12 men on the field…unacceptable! So I can’t sit and blame the Saints the Vikes could of and should of dominated that game. They didn’t the rest is history and as a fan of the NFL play hard don’t play to hurt your opponent.

  38. vikesfansteve says: Apr 7, 2012 11:44 AM

The real story is the ref’s who were paid off. When that story finally breaks, every result of every game ever played in the NFL will be questioned. The league is doing everything in their power to keep that under wraps. Just like the NBA & boxing. The NFL ref’s were paid off & the fix was in.

  42. brintfatre says: Apr 7, 2012 12:24 PM

Watch the game and listen to Buck and Aikman’s discussions about Favre.

The bruises Favre attributed to the Saint’s game were actually already there and had been seen by others prior to the game.

Favre lost that game for the Vikings with his boneheaded throw. No amount of history revision can change that!

Make all the excuses you want. Employing the skills of the interception king has it’s price and the Vikings and Chilly paid it…

  43. brownicus says: Apr 7, 2012 12:34 PM

As a Vikings fan, I don’t necessarily blame the bounties as the reason we lost. There was a lot of other things that went wrong in that game, but even then they still barely lost with that that stuff the saints did.
It’s nice to wonder what could have happened without the bounty stuff, but it doesn’t matter at this point.
And yes there is a difference between hitting a player hard and hitting a player hard with the intent of injuring them, something some people don’t get.
As far as Williams goes, he may find work again in a few years after people have gotten over this a bit, but he’s got a long ways to go before that can happen.

  44. packerswambulance says: Apr 7, 2012 1:01 PM

Frankly, I believe your SB title and your 2012 season should be forfeited in it’s entirety. Criminal charges and negligent charges along with intent to injure and cover up should be brought on all coaches from Payton down including Loomis. Alright, smart guy. If the Saints were out gained by so many yards, how did they score more points? I’ll tell you how. Pay attention:

The Saints had over two hundred yards in returns meaning they actually had a return game. If the Saints get the ball on the 40, they can only go 60 yards before they score. They had the shorter field every time. Meanwhile, the Vikings start inside their own 20 and cough it up inside the 5, effectively padding every stat except the one that counts. If that’s dominant, you can have it. Keep crying.

Really? Did you watch the same game I did? Seemed to me the Saints rear ends were kicked up and down the field in a clean way. The Saints won by the score but it took a lot of cheap shots and blown ref calls to win at him in OT. Yes I blame the Vikings too. You don’t win many games by turning the ball over 6 times. Cmon fellow vikings fans… We lost cuz we fumbled 5 times. Threw a pick and had 12 men on the field. Yes the saints were dirty, the refs let em play an the vikes didnt match the intesity of the saints…

You’re right. All of that had an affect on the outcome of the game. But there was much more to it. Think about it. Without the cheap shots to Favre, he runs for the first down with plenty of yards to spare. That takes away the INT and the 12 man penalty. Easy short FG to win the game. I’m so tired of hearing it was just about the fumbles. A lot more to it but yes it was a part of it.

ok you viking fans are unbelievable. first off,the reason we won is not just because of the hits on favre, hes a tough son of a bitch and he’s taken worse(by ya’ll might i add alot of times). we won that game because we outcoached and outplayed you. plus if your star running back could stop being scared of the ball ya’ll might have won it. i still believe that was one of the greatest playoff games ever and nobody should be ashamed, they both played hard, but the fact that you believe we cheated is the most ridiculous thing i ever heard. bounties are not cheating, that’s just simply hitting harder than normal, spygate was cheating. i don’t agree with what gregg williams said in a way, mentioning acls went too far,but that is normally how a defensive meeting is. also to call for our title to be vacated, goodell better be prepared to vacate all three patriot titles, the raiders titles(as they admitted that cheating was encouraged)and i’m sure there are others as well. the point is,it was our time,we had the better team, and we will forever be proud to be the 2009 super bowl champions. you can say whatever you want about us,but that championship will forever remain as one of the greatest days in not only my life, but many members of the who dat nation’s lives as well.

    @ejmat2…
    Yes you tell em !!
Vikes would’ve win that game if not for those cheap shots, blown calls, five turn overs, twelve men on the field, last minute interceptions, and on and on …
Vikes would have definitely win that game think about it: if the Saints didn’t put all them hard hits on Favre. They would have also won if Tracy Porter wasn’t on the team, and if the Saints defense didn’t play so hard as they did at the end because the Vikings’ offense was destroying them up and down the field they would have most definitely won!!! Damn Saints why did your play so hard? Your should’ve given up when we had over 500 yards of offense on you!! Stupid Saints! Vikings would have won that game.
And the Saints should’ve won against the 49ers too if Alex Smith would’ve been the Alex Smith we knew. I don’t understand why the 49ers won because the Saints had over 600 yards on offense, they beat the 49ers up and down that field , they should’ve won. And also if it wasn’t for Pierre Thomas’ fumble on like the five yard line because he got knocked out, the Saints should’ve won!!!!
Stupid five turnovers, if it wasn’t for that the Saints would have two rings right now!!! Because we just know we would have easily beat the Pats.

Edjmat, there was only 1 illegal hit on Favre the rest were clean. You don’t need to have a bounty on a guy to get called for a late hit. They happen in just about every game. Hang onto the ball and dont throw it to the other team. Hitting a QB is the key to winning just about every football game and the Saints did it well that day. Your team lost. Get over it.

Shiancoe also suggested that without the Saints taking cheap shots at Vikings quarterback Brett Favre, “we could have a ring right now.”
    ————————————-
49ers had a bounty on them, you know what they did?
They hit Brees and Shutdown the Saints Offense, something Jared Allen and the Starcap gang couldn’t do.
They also didn’t have Childress as their Headcoach.
