Asante Samuel would like to remind you he’s still a great cornerback

Earl Bennett, Asante Samuel AP

Asante Samuel may not have a future in Philadelphia, but he’s still a great cornerback.

At least, he thinks he is.

Samuel has decided to spend his Easter morning tweeting about how great he is, with several links to a blog post that makes a statistical case for Samuel being one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

“At least some people do their homework and just don’t believe the damn people that never played football,” Samuel wrote in a tweet supporting that blog post.

In multiple tweets directed at Eagles beat writers, Samuel provided the link and wrote, “A quick reminder that Asante Samuel is still a great CB.” Samuel seems to object to the coverage he has received in the media. He also retweeted a tweet that criticized “non football playin ass media mofo’s.”

“They always say I’m a gambler but I don’t get beat!” Samuel added. “Dude went threw 2 years of film and couldn’t find me getting beat. Stop the negative pub.”

Samuel says the people who really matter, like Giants quarterback Eli Manning and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, know how good he is.

“In 8 quarters Eli only threw at me 2 times last season. In 4 quarters my boy Brady threw only once at me. #respect,” Samuel wrote.

Of course, the Eagles are well aware of how often Samuel is targeted by opposing quarterbacks and how Samuel looks on tape, and the Eagles are still choosing to dangle Samuel as trade bait. So they’re apparently not convinced that he’s quite as great as he thinks he is.

But if Samuel plays for another team in 2012, he’ll clearly be motivated to prove the Eagles wrong.

Nobody is saying he isn’t “great” …
He has to admit his game has flaws …
    1) Can’t play man coverage
    2) As big a diva as you can be and be a corner
    3) Injury prone
    4) Making nearly 10M this year

That all being said it’s time for both parties to move on.

  2. frankfordyellowjackets says: Apr 8, 2012 12:22 PM

He is a great cornerback. He just doesn’t fit the Eagles scheme anymore.

  3. dirtybird28 says: Apr 8, 2012 12:28 PM

Sledgehorn hit the nail om the head. He is getting older, he is making way too much, and both parties need a fresh fit. I don’t know how AS didn’t truly figure when Nnamdi AND DRC were acquired.

  4. TheWizard says: Apr 8, 2012 12:29 PM

Not very smart to start a war with the media.

The old adage about being nice to people on the way up, because you’ll surely see them again on the way back down.

  5. dolphins4 says: Apr 8, 2012 12:29 PM

The only reason the Eagles want to trade him is that he don’t fit Juan Castillos defense.

  6. baldeaglejohnie says: Apr 8, 2012 12:32 PM

He would be a nice upgrade at CB for a large percentage of the league!
He can still make plays to win you games.

    A 2 or a 3 please.

  7. akd1287 says: Apr 8, 2012 12:34 PM

Samuels is underrated but overpaid. He’s a good corner but he isn’t Revis good.

  8. cannonballdookie says: Apr 8, 2012 12:34 PM

Philly REALLY needs to move on, even though he is a very good corner, and IMO he is better than DRC, none of those three corners can play the slot and having them all is redundant. DRC is cheaper so he stays, but Samuel should really help out a team, one of the best cover corners in the league.

  9. phillybirds says: Apr 8, 2012 12:37 PM

If the Eagles trade him it’s because of his cap hit. Not because he isn’t good. Is it realistic to keep DRC, Nnamdi, and Samuel?? None of them are good nickel backs. Use your head Smith. Out of all the writers here I think you’re the worst.

  10. onlysane1intheroom says: Apr 8, 2012 12:39 PM

Except for that dropped interception in the endzone in the SB…..

  11. phillyphan83 says: Apr 8, 2012 12:48 PM

he needs to understand he’s got to be moved while we can get quality for him. nothing dumber than letting a guy go as a free agent when he can be traded the year before for a quality draft pick

  12. derekjetersmansion says: Apr 8, 2012 12:53 PM

Except he left Jaiquawn Jarrett out to dry vs. Fitzgerald, which ruined the season, but other than that, he’s great!

  13. andyreiddoublecheeseburger says: Apr 8, 2012 12:55 PM

He is a very good corner but highly overpaid. Furthermore, he hasn’t been utilized properly in Philly due to the fact that that pass rush has been inadequate, and the safeties behind him nothing short of awful. And to add 2 more corners to the mix after having doled-out the type of money they did on Samuels is indicative of the fact that the Eagles really have no firm plan in place-it’s just a grabbag approach.

  14. lilrob10201 says: Apr 8, 2012 12:59 PM

Those times Asante was thrown towards his man resulted in a TD.

  15. hus10188 says: Apr 8, 2012 1:04 PM

““In 8 quarters Eli only threw at me 2 times last season. In 4 quarters my boy Brady threw only once at me. #respect,” Samuel wrote.”

Most telling thing from that quote is the major respect a NFC East CB has for Eli to reference him among the class of a Brady as one of the elite QBs that shied away from him.

Remember when Eli said he was in the class of a Brady at the start of the year?

Good to know Eli is finally getting that well overdue respect.

  16. mungman69 says: Apr 8, 2012 1:06 PM

Assante is still a great corner. The Eagles will get a high draft pick for him.

  17. eaglesnoles05 says: Apr 8, 2012 1:07 PM

Great in the scheme we used to run, and too expensive for the new team. #bottomline

  18. greenbloodking says: Apr 8, 2012 1:09 PM

I LOOOOOOVE what Asante brings to the table… But there are quite a few plays that I can remember seeing him get beat in the endzone. You take the good with the bad. If he stays I will cheer for him When he makes a play and curse at him for biting on a double move. If he leaves I will understand and still encourage my QB to not throw his way.

  19. 7to10for6allday says: Apr 8, 2012 1:09 PM

I totally agree with most blogs on here. Samuel is good, it’s a business and the eagles can’t pay 10 million for a guy who doesn’t fit the scheme. Nnamdi and drc will both play better this year bc theyll be back to their original positions. I hope the eagles trade him soon…..although I wouldn’t be surprised on a draft day trade with the patriots. Samuel is way better than anyone else they have in the secondary. Enjoyed watching you samuel but your time is up. Good luck

  20. jacksaysfu says: Apr 8, 2012 1:11 PM

You are a great CB Asante , but Rodgers-cromartie and Asomugha can play man press and that’s the system Juan is trying to instill . Also DRC is 6 years younger and about 7 million cheaper . We need that money to extend Shady & Maclin sometime soon … Any Eagles fan whose been to lehigh knows what you bring to the field , but unless we put Nnamdi back to the safety position he played in college (wont ever happen) there’s no room for 3 CB’s who all play the outside.

  23. hammerjacker says: Apr 8, 2012 1:14 PM

If its really just a third rounder they want, and if he can restructure his contract(he is great, but hes not “Elite” he must know this)to a more reasonable number, maybe with incentives reached he can still get near the 10m…. Would welcome him back to NE in a heartbeat.

  24. kacapaco says: Apr 8, 2012 1:18 PM

Am not Eagles fan and don’t watch them play too often, but if the stats I read are true the guy is great. Why do ‘analysts’ think he is overrated?!!

  25. jacksaysfu says: Apr 8, 2012 1:19 PM

@andyreiddoublecheeseburger :”the pass rush has been inadequate”

Maybe you need to watch the Eagles games from last year again. Our pass rush was amazing and they led the league in sacks .

  26. exilerugby says: Apr 8, 2012 1:23 PM

    Two things:

    1. Asante’s twitter name is actually @pick_six22.

    2. If you type Asante Samuel into the Google search box, the first listing under his name is ‘Asante Samuel dropped interception.’ I wouldn’t mind him patting himself on the back at all if he hadn’t dropped the Lombardi Trophy. A truly great corner makes that play.

  27. mancave001 says: Apr 8, 2012 1:28 PM

Whining in public a out the Eagles. Yeah, that has worked out well in the past. The birds benched freakin TERRELL OWENS for his attitude and DeSean Jackson for oversleeping. What do you think they’ll do for a guy that weighs 150 pounds soaking wet, can’t tackle, can’t play man and has been whining like a girl for a year? By ASSante!

  28. mauricebrewington says: Apr 8, 2012 1:48 PM

I love how eager you clowns are to bash this guy. He is a 10,000,000 dollars a year cornerback and you are a nobody.
Dictionary definition of player hating. You act like dude hasn’t caught more passes than any player who wasn’t on offense the past 4 seasons. He’s a beast give him his respect. That’s what this is about.

  29. upperdecker19 says: Apr 8, 2012 1:59 PM

  31. harrisonhits2 says: Apr 8, 2012 2:07 PM

Sante was great when he had Rodney Harrison over the top so he could take chances on picks knowing that if he wiffed Rodney would cover his ass and make sure a big play or TD didn’t happen. Without a very good safety to watch his back and actively cover those pick attempts, he drops down a couple notches.

Love to see him back in a Pats uni, though not for 10 mil.

  32. illwillthemick says: Apr 8, 2012 2:10 PM

  34. t16rich says: Apr 8, 2012 2:42 PM

There isnt a player in the league who knows the smell of a players shoes better than Asante. Worst tackling attmpts I have ever seen. David Akers tackling puts Asantes tackling to shame.

    ******************************************

Probably because he HASN’T. Charles Woodson has 2 more INT’s than Asante has over the last 4 years.

People keep repeating this “fact” like it’s true – facts ARE that he does NOT have the most INT’s over the last 4 years.

  36. inthearex says: Apr 8, 2012 2:46 PM

  37. eaglebranded says: Apr 8, 2012 2:58 PM

First of all Asante needs to just shut up. Stop taking stuff to heart . Hell Andy and the front office has fielded more questions and offers for more players than you. As they always say they will listen to any team proposition for any one of their players . So quit the crying and trying to get attention for you find yourself going to a sorry team fustrating you more so you can run your mouth and end up getting blackballed out the league before its time. True fans of football know you are an elite corner . In fact people that say he is not need to check his stats . No cornerback has posted as many interceptions as Asante in the last five years combined . So when people talk about Revis being the number one corner in the league It’s funny to me . Look at the recievers he face yearly than look at who Asante faces yearly . Then look at last years game with Revis checking disgruntled Desean and the boys . He was used most of the game until he so-called got injured . In which he seems to do a lot when a teams receiver gets the best of him.

  38. mrcosio says: Apr 8, 2012 3:03 PM

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this but I find it funny that Asante Samuels says his critics have never played the game yet the writers of that blog that praises him more than likely have never played the game…

  39. phillymike5959 says: Apr 8, 2012 3:08 PM

Any real Eagle fan would agree it’s time for him to move on..It was a good run but the Matador tackling diving head first into guys knees, when he does decide to tackle, ‘Me first’ ‘I’m a business entity’ attitude has worn thin..get him off the books, get a 3rd, use his 10 Mill cap hit to lock up McCoy play Nnamdi and DRC in press/man , like they should be used, and let’s get it on………

  40. bleed4philly says: Apr 8, 2012 3:36 PM

He’s been a great help to our team, but lately his play has been inconsistent and he doesn’t tackle well either, doesn’t fit the new scheme, his free agent contract makes him overpriced now, just trade him for a late round pick and be done with it.

  41. juicedtothemax says: Apr 8, 2012 3:39 PM

Yeah he doesn’t get beat but I remember a specific play when he gambled thinking the blitzer was gonna get home and he thought his receiver was hot. He squatted and the reciever went right by him and the QB lobbed it down the sideline for an easy 6. I remember thinking isn’t he one of the better corners in the league but what an ignorant move to pull.

  42. myopinionmattersandyoursblows says: Apr 8, 2012 3:44 PM

Im sure i will be censored before you read this, but what the hey…
Asante Samuel can cover well; but his abiluty to make an open field tackle is atrocious! That is why the Eagles are dangling him to the other 31 teams.

Rodney was injured in 2006 when Asante had his breakout season. Rodney wasn’t that good in 2007, and he played closer to the line of scrimmage than back deep. So I wouldn’t be giving Rodney too much credit for Asante’s good couple years in New England.

  44. 6thsense79 says: Apr 8, 2012 4:48 PM

A number of top ten lists has Samuels ranked in either the top 5 or top 10 cornerbacks in the league. He is elite by just about every measure. For an organization as successfull and smart as the Eagles have been over the years it’s a lttle surprising to see how they’ve miss used both Namdi and Samuels. The Eagles paid a lot of money to Asomugha who made his name as possibly the best cover corner in the league and who played on the edge all his career and asked him to play the the slot. That to me is like buying a Ferrari and using it to haul a trailer. Can it get the job done? Sure but that’s not the best use of a high price sports car.

I made a similar point a couple weeks ago on the Pats board I go to. If you have a gambler CB without a stud , very smart safety like Rodney it’s asking for trouble. In fact, I wonder if many realize that besides the dropped INT, AS was the guy supposed to cover Tyree on that infamous play in SB 42 and instead Rodney lives in SB infamy because he was trying to cover for Mr Freelancer.

Pats don’t have that safety right now. I love Chung, but he isn’t close to Rodney’s level yet. I’d like to see them draft Harrison Smith. He seems like he COULD be that Rodney type guy. I like my safeties smart. My CBs can be plankton heads though. :)

AS already tweeted about this article being here too. He loves him some him. He’ll never be a Patriot again. Doubt he would want that, and I am about 100% positive the Pats don’t.

The last thing the Iggles need is another low-character human being on that team. Ship him out! When they lost high character people like Dawkins, Westbrook, and Akers …the core that were left over couldn’t handle adversity (see 2011-2012 season). Buh-bye A.S!! Wouldn’t it be appropriate if his middle name began with an “S”?

He’s never been the “weakness” of any defense. So, unless you’ve ever scored a touchdown on this man… Shut up! He’s pretty damn good.
