For the record, I don&#039;t hate Tebow.  Quite the opposite.  I don&#039;t think he is a very good quarterback but as a man, he is top-notch.  His charitable givings are something that more people with money and/or power should strive to emulate.

Nobody has claimed the founding fathers were atheists.  Most have rightly pointed out that they were deists.  There is a big difference.

And the reason they put Freedom of Religion FIRST is because it was most important to them.  To guarantee that each citizen could practice whatever religion they wanted to and for the government to not make a stand for OR against any religion.

The reason most people take issue with what Tebow said is that his notion that &#039;One Nation Under God&#039; was the basis of this country has no basis in factual evidence.

In the 1796 Treaty of Tripoli it was written that the United States was “not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.” The founding fathers were mostly deists. They believed in a creator of the universe, but not the Christian version of this God. In the 1796 Treaty of Tripoli it was written that the United States was “not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.” The founding fathers were mostly deists. If any feel they are not allowed to do this, I would like to know.

1. &#039;In God We Trust&#039; was NOT the motto or slogan of the country until the 50&#039;s.  It was not on the money until President Lincoln&#039;s treasury secretary added it during the Civil War.

2. &#039;One Nation Under God&#039; was NOT in the original pledge of allegiance.  It was added during the 50&#039;s.

3. Other than NO/NONE/ZERO mention of religion in the Constitution, the biggest and most glaring point as to the feelings of our founding fathers comes from the &#039;Treaty of Tripoli&#039; which was signed into law June 10, 1797.  
Article 11 states:
&#039;As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims],—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Muslim] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.&#039;
This was unanimously ratified by congress and signed into law (the constitution states that Treaties are to be considered the Supreme Law of the land) by President John Adams.]]></description>
