Jeff Long is n idiot. He just ensured that he'll be unemployed shortly himself. I was surprised petrino even stayed there as long as he did. penn State is covering up child molestors and the allegations that came out on urban Meyer the other day make a guy hitting a 20 something year old volleyball girl and getting her a low paying job in administration afterward look like child's play.

Hardly a firable offense, no matter how the moralists try to spin it. Look at Louisville's Rick Pitino for parallels, don't think the world ended there because he was "morally" wrong, whatever that means these days.

Like someone up top said, the hypocritical administrators in college football hardly have room to be criticizing anyone. They were lucky that Petrino even took the job in the first place before they were able to lure their apparent first choice, the great Lane Kiffin from the Raiders, so I don't think the brain trust in Arkansas is all that sharp to begin with. Petrino is not just a good coach, he's a great coach, certainly the best the Razorbacks could have ever done.

And for anyone criticizing him for bailing on the Falcons early that year, do you remember the disaster that season became when Michael Vick WENT To JAIL? If he didn't get fired at the end of the season, he was going to get it shortly afterward the next year because the franchise was in shambles and would have brought in Dimitroff anyway who would have eventually replaced him with his own guy.

He was simply looking out for himself and his family instead of waiting around like most of these dummies to be fired, although the circumstances changed dramatically right after he took the Falcon job, which more than justified his actions to me.

So give me a break with the, "karma" angle. Only thing he did wrong was not tell his assistants before he left. You Falcon fans ought to be loving him and his brother for saving your first round receiver, Roddy White, from being a bust because they were the ones who taught him how to play wide receiver in the NFL, something he readily admits.

It was the cover up not the crime. I don’t see the issue with hiring Jessica Dorrel at 55K a year, she has a masters. I would like to see what the posters on her would do at age 50 if a 6ft blonde wrapped her legs around you. Petrino broke no laws and coaches have do worse. From what I’ve heard he had an open marriage and she had broken off her engagement 2 days before he hired her.

-----

Yes, it WAS most likely the cover up that did him in, but what was Jessica Dorrel's job, exactly? She had a position created for her that required her to do, as a practical matter, nothing. So does she have a masters degree in nothing? So do I.

I love this quote from SI about Petrino's hiring:

"Today's announcement is the culmination of a comprehensive search process which was intended to identify a leader for our football program that would serve our student-athletes and fans with class and dignity."
-- Jeff Long, Dec. 11, 2007

-------------------
This is probably the first (and last) time the words "class" and "dignity" are used in a sentence about Petrino. (Unless they are preceded by the words "lack of".)

I live in Missouri. I've watched Gary Pinkel get a DUI with 3 people in the car and get suspended one game. Petrino has a consensual affair with a co-worker and gets fired. I'm sorry, but our priorities are messed up. Petrino's actions, at worst, were self destructive.

From my angle, a man can't lose his job because you morally object to his lifestyle away from work. That's a very slippery slope. After all, it's his life, and away from the job he should have the freedom to live it as he sees fit.

So it’s ok to fire a guy over cheating on his wife and leave his players and recruits hanging, but heaven forbid he up and quit leaving them hanging. Cause who you sleep with makes u a better coach right.
-------------------------------------------------
No, but when you ignore 160 other applicants and hire your mistress to run a key aspect of your recruiting department, does that make you a better coach? Recruiting is everything in college football and it's the area most likely to get your program sanctioned if something falls through the cracks. Don't mess where you eat, dude.

Man, I still remember when he quit. I remember that he told Arthur Blank that he wasn't interviewing. He had the game, left and went home. Players normally aren't in the locker room on Tuesday, so he waited to get his things, give Arthur Blank his resignation and hung a "Dear John" letter to the players in their lockers. That was early afternoon.

Then, he was on the first thing smoking, signed with Arkansas and was "Pig-sooiiee-ing" with some cheerleaders at the podium by 11PM that same day. Tuesday. And Warrick Dunn, someone who gives away a house to single mothers every year and allowed for some strangers to live in his personal home during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina... called him a coward.

After all that, this news is sweet.
