Team needs: Washington Redskins

With the NFL draft approaching, we’ll examine the needs that each team has to address. Up next is the team that traded up for the second pick, the Washington Redskins.

Quarterback: There’s not much surprise about what ranks as the biggest need on the Redskins’ roster. Mike Shanahan has run through three different starting quarterbacks in his first two seasons without much success and the fortunes of the Redskins won’t change until they settle things down under center. That’s why the team paid a hefty price to move up to the second pick in the draft for a shot at Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III.

All signs point to Griffin being the pick. The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor has drawn high marks for his arm, legs, leadership and everything else you want to see from a franchise quarterback. There are other areas of need on the Redskins roster, but they will look less glaring with Griffin leading the offense.

Safety: The Redskins said goodbye to both of last year’s starters — LaRon Landry and O.J. Atogwe — this offseason. They signed Brandon Meriweather, Madieu Williams and Cedric Griffin (a corner who could move to safety), but could still use higher end talent at the position. It might be hard to get one without a second round pick, but they should have their eyes open in the later rounds for a player they can bring along.

Offensive Line: Left tackle Trent Williams is a failed drug test away from a year-long suspension, right tackle Jamaal Brown has a hip injury, left guard Kory Lichtensteiger has knee problems and there’s little in reserve. The Redskins need to add bodies who will be able to step in when needed so that their investment in Griffin doesn’t go up in smoke. Right tackle would be the most obvious spot to upgrade, but, given the St. Louis deal, the Redskins might have to settle for a player who can provide depth now and start later.

Cornerback: DeAngelo Hall and Josh Wilson are decent starters, but the ‘Skins need better depth to succeed on defense in today’s NFL. Kevin Barnes hasn’t been productive enough in the nickel role so replacing him would be a good start. Virginia product Chase Minnifield has fallen down draft boards thanks to shoulder surgery, but the Redskins could find some value in looking in their backyard in the fourth round.

Inside Linebacker: The team is still expected to re-sign London Fletcher, but grabbing a player to mold into his replacement wouldn’t be a bad idea. With inside backers somewhat devalued in the NFL these days, they could find an intriguing prospect in the latter half of the draft.

No matter what else the Redskins do in the draft, their future relies on how Griffin does at quarterback in the future. If he hits, there’s a good chance everything else falls into place.

  1. washington’s biggest need is an Owner, GM and a few scouts who know what the heck they are doing

  2. You don’t think they already have a developmental safety in Dejon Gomes? Thought he looked pretty good for a 3rd day rookie.

  3. Disagree with the QB recommendation just b/c RG3/Luck will be that QB for years and any other QB won’t see the field… They need OLinemen and they need them now… Or, if Fletcher doesn’t resign, a good ILB… I would say secondary but at this point they’ve pretty much addressed that in free agency, unless some stud falls to them that they just can’t refuse… My money is on OLinemen though

  4. The Skins better hope Kerrigan and Orakpo can provide fast pressure on opposing QB’s or it will be a long year for them. That is on pathetic safety corp!

  5. Resign London Fletcher and grab some O-Linemen!Also,Dump Deangelo Hall and Give us back our cap space Mr.Commisioner,After all it was you that approved the contracts!!!! Here is my middle finger to the Giants whinning owner and all of the Redskins haters!!!!!!

  6. Uummm…. Quarterback. After that, hopefully a couple of the later picks turn into contributors, its too expensive to build through free agency.

  7. Griffin will be running for his life with that
O-Line. Especially once Trent fails his test!!thats
Just a matter of when not IF. And NFC east
D lines griff better have that 4.4 speed.

  8. I doubt we draft a QB considering the need for OL,SS,FS,CB,ILB,and maybe RB if Tim Hightower isn’t resigned. That and the fact that were missing the 2nd rounder.

  9. As much as don’t like Danny. U can’t get rid of him, so hope that he continues to let the professions do their thing. O line, o line, o line is what we need.

  10. The Redskins NEED to be put in another division. 4 straight years of last place finishes in the NFC east. The first time that’s happened in the 42 year history of the division.

We’re not even talking about winning the division… We’re talking being the worst team in the division. They can’t even compete.

  11. The joke about how the Redskins need a new owner was definitely funnier the 427,635th time I read it.

Shannahan still coaches like he did in the past… The game had moved on my friend.

Jason Garret is doing a great job in dallass with all the talent those folks have down there. Are you kidding me? A dallass fan talking smack when year in and year out these jokers are going to the super bowl? The audacity. Let me know when Romo doesn’t throw up all over himself in dec, and then talk some smack. Witten goes down with a bad knee injury this year by the way. You heard it here first.

  13. Can we all stop with the New Owner talk???

Seriously? What has Dan not done in the past few years to try and help them win?

If anyone is to blame it is Coach Shan…He put the QBs on the field last year. Not Dan. If Dan had interfered as we all would have liked, then you could perpetuate all of this junk

  14. All the redskins do is take old players who resume is good from other systems…overpay them…absolutely trashed the leagues pay system for free agents…ala Albert Haynesworth…$100 million to a DT that will never have the football in his hands….makes the next best DT thinks he is worth close to $100 million…and most of the time the players can’t be traded because nobody is willing to pay what the 5-11 redskins payed for an aging bum….the skins can’t evaluate talent on there own…they draft like crap…and every player that leaves the skins and are smart enuff to do so…flourishes in other systems…ala….Desmond Howard…Second Thomas….Jason Campbell…Donovan Mcnabb was a respectable QB in the league until the skins got a hold of him….How do you lose your job to Rex average at best Grossman?…..Smdh

  15. we need a new head coach! Shanny staked his reputation on john beck last year.. that means he has no more reputation, right? I say we transfer him to being our scout. He’s great at getting a solid, contending team together, he just can’t coach them… too much of a control freak.

  16. So how many more threads are the complete idiots of PFT going to say “(Insert Team Name) need a new owner”. Is there an annual NFL Ownership draft that I don’t know about? How do you “Scout” an owner? Every team should be thankful for the owner they have, because without him, your team wouldn’t exist. The ‘Skins will be fine. Luck or Griffen fit Shan’s system, the running game will always be there, and the defense is good enough to keep them hanging around. The ‘Skins will probably finish 3rd in the East with NYG at 1 and Dallas at 2. Interesting fact… only 2 times has a QB missed more than 5 games due to injury under Mike Shannahan, and never more than 7. Just throwing it out there…

  17. Skins are good with starters and depth at TE … plus starters at PK and P … so there’s those guys.

  18. Everyone is saying “let’s get rid of the owner, coach, and OC.” what new owners and coaches do you suggest? If you think it’s that simple, need I remind you that remaking your team after a coach like zorn or spurrier steals years of contention. Most of you guys buy into the truism that Snyder is a bad owner. He’s the owner of a bad team, he has made bad decisions, all true. He’s too involved in decisions? Well should that be an indictment of his decisions, and not that he made them at all? No one seems to care when Rooney or Mara pushes for change, or sticks up for a player. Or is it that he spends all the money he does? Would you rather he build another wing on his house, or buy a new plane? No, the reason you hate him is because your tiny little minds need a face to blame, someone rich would be best so as to engender no sympathy. Good for you, pat yourselves on the back, you are brilliant, albeit, unaccountable.

  19. So according the PFT the Skins need every single position on the field?
    ——————————————————-
clearly you didnt read, if you did then you would see RB was missing, so was punter, outside linebackers and defensive linemen!!! so how’s that everything?????

Now the needs are clear as day. they need a RT (depth reasons), a guard (depth reasons), then (depends on Fletcher) a inside linebacker, now if Fletcher re-signs, they are fine there in my book for a year. they need to use the 3rd and first 4th round pick on right tackle and guard, then after that look into other areas.

  20. its amazing how far down a hole vinny cerrato put us in..plus not to mention the b.s cap penalty..still waiting for the verdict on that crap..

  21. Skins needs- Everything. Yes, even another QB. This RG3 is going to get hurt if the Draft is not Oline, Oline, Oline and then maybe a Safety.

  22. Dan Snyder is wealthier than most owners and is willing to spend to win. He has taken a back seat and stopped meddling in football affairs and left that job to football minds. So as was once so eloquently said in one of these very comment sections: “Update your smack.”

  23. Skins fan here.

Lay off Danny…the dumbass is trying, and finally learned in my opinion, here is why.

For 10 years he ran my club like a first year fantasy football owner…the guy who drafts a kicker in the 8th round. Y’all are right: he signed some dumbass contracts to over the hill and different system players. He ran off good players and coaches. His Napoleonism took the best of him and he really screwed us up…vis a vis allowing his buddy Vinny Cerrato to drive us into a big spending-no draft hole.

I will say this though, ever since he took a TON of negative press 2 years ago, when he sued the City Paper for that article…he took a back seat. He finally learned, and so you can’t really fault him anymore. First he hired Allen as the GM, then Shanny as the coach, and for the first time in his tenure he DELAGATED ALL RESPONSIBILITY TO THEM. Have you even heard a mouse fart from him since hiring them? NOPE…he just writes checks for them now, which is what a GOOD owner does.

It will take a while to undo the mess which was created. Thus, give Shanny et al time to change things. It cannot be over night, which is why Shanny was hired to a 5 year deal. I pray Danny lets Shanny live out his contract…and at the end, you decide if you need to move on. From my point of view, minus the Donovan McNabb hiccup (a good gamble though), Shanny et all have done a good job. We are younger and with more talent…we have draft picks, and finally went after getting a franchise QB…something we haven’t had in 20 years.

So back up off of Danny…your hatred of him is blinding you of the progress he has made. I will give you that it took him too long to do it, but that is neither here nor there.

  24. i said this before and will say it again, i do NOT agree with the people saying Washington needs “everything.”
they do NOT need a punter. IF Fletcher is re-signed then THIS year, i dont think a ILB is needed either. Fletcher and Riley are good enough starters and Alexander is underrated as a backup, now next year, i would look into inside linebacker (for the future), but now, no. they dont need a left tackle (unless Williams is suspended) and they dont need one cornerback or defensive linemen. they also in my book dont need a Running back badly because i think both Royster and Helu can play. they need a QB and will get one, they need at least good depth on the line, mainly at right tackle and guard, they need a 2nd corner and wont get one and they likely need safety help, but dont look for that either. i see them going tackle, guard, running back, corner and either linebacker or safety.

There are so many things wrong with this post i dont even know where to begin!! So lets start with the easier one. Desmond Howard didnt flourish in any other system he went to GB and became a good kick returner not WR. As far as receivers go he was one of the biggest bust in NFL history, Jason Campbells qb rating was lower in Oakland then when he was in WAS. McNabb was a good qb in a system that made him look better in Philly (I.E. Vick, Kold Pederson, Detemer), then he went to MINN got benched for a rookie and then cut half way thro the season, so in short McNAbb ruined himself. I understand you have hatred for the skins but please for the love of god buy a dictonary look up the def of flourished then get on espn.com and check your facts before leaving the kids table to talk with the adults about sports.

  26. Ok, the Redskins have signed 3 safeties, 2 corners and an offensive lineman who’s played right tackle before. Now we need to resign L.Fletcher and T.Hightower who was having a great debut before getting injured. Draft needs: RT, OG, C, LT, and best available talent at the last two draft positions.

  27. Everyone talks about how tough the NFC East is but last year the only division with a worse winning percentage was the AFC South. Being the worst team in the weakest division in the NFC just shows that the Redskins have a looonnnngggg way to go. Good luck Shanarat, RG3 won’t be enough by himself.

  28. jjackwagon and other haters, nfc east won the superbowl(redskins swept them. they played tough vs pats too. most were close games close enough that a decent qb would make them an 8-8 team easily.
no, the game hasn’t past shanahan, houston has the same scheme as the redskins. with rg3 being a perfect fit for the offense..
