Burress must disclose finances after losing civil lawsuit

Plaxico Burress is learning that the best thing about accidentally shooting yourself in the leg is that you can’t be sued for it.

Six months before that fateful night in Manhattan when a bullet from a Glock blew two holes in Plaxico’s leg (and sent him to prison for 20 months), Burress crashed his $150,000 Mercedes into a car near a toll plaza.  In December 2011, a jury entered a $125,000 verdict in favor of the other driver.

Burress, whose insurance expired three days before the accident, has yet to pay.

“The general sense is that we are going to have to get the money the hard way,” attorney Anthony Quackenbush told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Burress has now been ordered to submit by the middle of May a full disclosure of his income (currently, none), his real estate holdings, and his bank accounts.

Burress currently is appealing the judgment, which is reason enough to not pay.  But in the event the appeal fails, here’s hoping he does the right thing and write a check for the harm that a court of law has determined he caused.

A one-year deal in 2011 paid Burress $3 million.  In four weeks and one day of free agency, Burress has not yet joined a new team.

Time to pass off your weed selling business, and the ledger book, to someone else REAL quick-like, plaxy.

  2. sledgehorn says: Apr 11, 2012 8:13 PM

Could be why the Eagles aren’t as interested as he is…

  3. h4wksf4n says: Apr 11, 2012 8:13 PM

    Hell no!

  4. babyhorsemorgan says: Apr 11, 2012 8:16 PM

Plaxico going the way of Texaco. Receivership and change of name.

  5. grogantomorganforthe says: Apr 11, 2012 8:17 PM

I love this guy! What a jerk. If its the right thing to do, then it’s not the Plax thing to do.

  6. aldavisisthenfl says: Apr 11, 2012 8:20 PM

Warren Sapp has just lost all respect for you Plax………

  7. aldavisisthenfl says: Apr 11, 2012 8:22 PM

maybe T.O. will lend Plax the money……

  8. andyreiddoublecheeseburger says: Apr 11, 2012 8:23 PM

Just pay the money Plax- why go through the hassle unless you haven’t got it. If you don’t, you’d better sign somewhere fast. Better yet, sell the car (if you got it)

  9. chawk12thman says: Apr 11, 2012 8:23 PM

For that sum of $, in relative terms to his overall income/wealth, it has to be on principle that he is making a stand……….LOL

  10. steelerhypocrite says: Apr 11, 2012 8:27 PM

Let’s see, he’s probably down to $100, a used rubber, and a cartridge with a few spent bullets.

  11. rexismybff says: Apr 11, 2012 8:29 PM

    The attorney’s name is “Quackenbush”??

No wonder Plax hasn’t paid. Probably doesn’t believe he’s a real person. Can’t say I blame him.

  12. fdugrad says: Apr 11, 2012 8:36 PM

At this rate, the bill his lawyers will tender him when this case is FINALLY completed will be more than the 125K . Plax seems INCAPABLE of making a sound decision. How can ANY team coach someone this IMPOSSIBLE to deal with? Wait a minute….could he perhaps be in Sapp, T.O., “Punky QB” financial territory? After all, he made ONLY 3million last year!!

  13. cmdrsmooth says: Apr 11, 2012 8:38 PM

    That’s just Plax being Plax.

  14. phillyocmd says: Apr 11, 2012 8:39 PM

Does anyone really think he has any of that $3 mill left?

  15. jakek2 says: Apr 11, 2012 8:40 PM

Why is this the first time we’re hearing of this. Did Plax not show up for the civil trial? Is the $125K a default judgment? Surely, if there was a trial, Plax would have testified. I don’t get this story.

  17. rudwo says: Apr 11, 2012 8:41 PM

What an idiot. He is just racking up attorney’s fees for the other guy (that Plax will have to pay anyway).

Plax is actually costing himself MORE money by trying to dodge this, and he will never be able to avoid paying it.

  18. exhibits5 says: Apr 11, 2012 8:42 PM

this guy is finished as a top WR in the NFL he cannot get past any corner back’s he’s very slow .

  19. derfshambeaux says: Apr 11, 2012 8:45 PM

Quackenbush? That’s his name? That’s awesome.

  20. bigd93 says: Apr 11, 2012 8:48 PM

Do the right thing? I doubt if he will. Maybe he can join T.O. in whatever league he is in an work a year for $125000 to pay whoever he stuck it to.

  21. nnagi says: Apr 11, 2012 8:50 PM

what an idiot and his wife must be just as bad, even though she’s a lawyer…plax is toast

  22. pacificamjr says: Apr 11, 2012 8:56 PM

shoulda settled for straight cash homie! he really shot himself in the foot by letting this go to trial and get out…

  23. kegowhisky says: Apr 11, 2012 9:09 PM

I’m surprised Roger Goodell isn’t using a picture of Plax as a poster child for the NFL, with a red circle and slash over the picture!

  24. pftfanatic says: Apr 11, 2012 9:14 PM

Probably doesn’t have to disclose the .03 cents an hour he earned in prison delivering library books, or the packs of cigarettes he earned for “bathing” his cell mates.

  25. mikebe1 says: Apr 11, 2012 9:21 PM

And this fool had the nerve to be picky about what team he wants to play for????

  26. upperdecker19 says: Apr 11, 2012 9:23 PM

Hey Moose…..Rocco……help Plax find his checkbook!!!!

    Mr. Quackenbush

Can’t take him out in polite society. Wonder who he’s gonna blame?

  29. pleasantsurpriselefty says: Apr 11, 2012 9:45 PM

It’s hard to believe a human being raised in this country can be this stupid. What, he thinks the other guy is just going to forget about it? Maybe if he wears that stupid gangsta hat to court it will scare everybody and he can get out of it.

The new Three Stooges film should have starred Plax, TO, and Warren Sapp (talk about an apropos name!)

Burress must disclose finances after losing civil lawsuit

    1. Bar of soup on a rope
    2. A pack of smokes
    3. A picture of a girl dressed as a guy. (Whats that about)
    4. A wallet with monpoly money, and botton and some pocket lent.

  31. mybrunoblog says: Apr 11, 2012 10:03 PM

Buress could raise 25k or more by selling his super bowl ring.
Maybe Tiki would buy it. I don’t believe he owns one.

  32. boilerup1869 says: Apr 11, 2012 10:05 PM

the first line of this article is hilarious

  33. catquick says: Apr 11, 2012 10:06 PM

Hurry up and pay numbskull, before some judge trebles the damages. BTW, Isn’t driving without insurance illegal? There goes the probation. Back in you cell, jughead!

  34. Patskrieg dot com says: Apr 11, 2012 10:15 PM

You spent HOW MUCH on bulletproof sweatpants??

  35. ajpurp says: Apr 11, 2012 10:20 PM

Dude rear ended a car, in a toll plaza. I would appeal too, this is a big B trying to cash in on getting hit by a pro athlete. Claiming “neck and back injuries”, worth 125k? It’s complete bull, ambulance chasing ratpack stuff. I have 4 herniated discs, tears all types of back stuff and it doesn’t cost 125k to get fixed. It is one of those hey client show up in a neck brace and milk this fender bender for all it’s worth since this guys got dough, didn’t have insurance and has a bad name. Then people wonder why our legal system is so messed up, insurance is so expensive and companies charge so much for services. Our tort system needs major reform.

  36. ajpurp says: Apr 11, 2012 10:21 PM

P.S. I’m a giants fan who hates burress endlessly because he ruined out 10-1
Season and our chance at making a second run because he’s an idiot

  37. scott8nj says: Apr 11, 2012 10:22 PM

Now that his playing career appears to be over, he can start his own business as a life coach.

  38. eaglebranded says: Apr 11, 2012 10:43 PM

He must of totaled the other car or the driver had terrible injuries. Seems funny how this comes out now . Half you people up here saying he should pay ,probably wouldn’t pay it yourselves. How he wasn’t in court is also funny It’s not like nobody could find him . If he didn’t he to court wouldn’t that be a violation of probation. Just saying somethings funny about the whole thing.

  39. realitypolice says: Apr 11, 2012 10:51 PM

Why should he pay it if the matter is under appeal?

No defendant in the history of Civil Law, and least none with a brain in their head, has ever paid a plaintiff before his appeal was heard.

Often times, when one side in a Civil suit is obviously wealthy (or famous) and one side is not, the jury will give money to the poorer party regardless of the strength of the case. That is why appellate judges are given much more leeway to adjust or reverse judgements than they are on the criminal side.

It is not unusual for an appellate judge to greatly lower or even eliminate the size of a jury award.

People on here criticizing Burress for not paying now simply don’t understand the law.

  40. sportmentary says: Apr 11, 2012 10:59 PM

Gunshot Buress is Tree Sapp’s new best friend. These two idiots can talk about being stupid and bankrupt!

  43. billsfan1 says: Apr 12, 2012 12:12 AM

    truth is….
He needed some fast cash and JG Wentworth was closed… SO he heard about some bounty going on in New Orleans and wanted in on some of that action. He heard about this stud wr named Plaxico Burress and was determined to get him. But ya know, he went to Michigan State so he wasnt able to put two and two together…..
found Plax in da club and bang , got him…

  45. yojoemama says: Apr 12, 2012 1:16 AM

Don’t big time athletes and celebrities usually have personal assistants and accountants on retainer so they don’t have to concern themselves with mundane everyday tasks like remembering to pay their insurance premium on time?

  53. chadmurdigan says: Apr 12, 2012 10:35 AM

Team up with Sapp and do a Laurel and Hardy type movie.

Maybe set it in a strip club with multiple women calling on their cells asking where their child support money is.
