Madden curse focuses on the final four

The good news for Panthers fans, 49ers fans, Packers fans, and Lions fans is that a high-profile player from their favorite team may be represented on the cover of the next Madden game.

The bad news for Panthers fans, 49ers fans, Packers fans, and Lions fans is that a high-profile player from their favorite team may be represented on the cover of the next Madden game.

The final four in the contrived (but, then again, we’re writing about it) bracket-style tournament have been announced.  Cam Newton bested Larry Fitzgerald, Patrick Willis overcame Victor Cruz (to the likely delight of Eli Manning), Aaron Rodgers surpassed Ray Rice, and Calvin Johnson spiked Rob Gronkowski.

Darren Rovell points out via Twitter that fans are voting not for the player they want but the player they want to curse.  We think it’s more of a blended electorate, with some fans hoping to put the evil eye on a high-profile player and others just wanting to see their favorite player/team on the plastic box that gets thrown into the corner once the disc is removed from the packaging and crammed into the console.

The winner/loser will be determined through the next two rounds of voting, with Newton squaring off against Willis and Rodgers facing Johnson, and the winners then locking horns.

The winner/loser will be scrutinized throughout 2012 for evidence of a curse, especially since this year’s game will presumably be entitled “Madden 13.”  And the question is whether the winner/loser will allow those concerns to creep into his consciousness.

The “Madden Curse” is for those 15 and younger.

Lets move on or move out.

    Go A-Rodg!

  3. jeremywflores says: Apr 11, 2012 10:58 AM

I don’t want any of those players to have the Madden Curse. All must-watch players.

Cam doing his superman pose or Megatron jumping over the Cowboys’ triple coverage for the TD for the cover please.

Vote for Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Willis

  5. tomeffnbrady says: Apr 11, 2012 11:07 AM

i absolutely voted for calvin johnson. not cause i dislike him. but i’m not taking any with gronk.

Willis has been vastly underrated for years, nice to see him get sum noteriety.

That said, Cam plays the game like he’s in a video game. He’s the obvious choice here.

And if I’m a Packer, I want concussion prone Rodgers nowhere near that cover.

    Better vote megatron!

  7. jeremyhurst says: Apr 11, 2012 11:22 AM

Willis is vastly underrated? I’m pretty sure everyone has known he is a top 5 LB for years, and no one underrates him at all.

  8. miggyandbiggy says: Apr 11, 2012 11:23 AM

BigplayCJ wins it, then puts all this curse nonsense to bed.

  9. smh35 says: Apr 11, 2012 11:26 AM

I’m glad Megatron beat out Gronkowski. That dude is a punk. He’s annoying. He’s the stereotypical jock, with a big head. That being said, I hope Megatron or Newton wins. I wouldn’t have a problem with any of these 4 on the cover though.

  10. geo91 says: Apr 11, 2012 11:31 AM

I’d love to see Megatron on the cover as curses affect man and not machine, but I’m voting for Willis, it’s been too long since defense got the madden cover

  11. rajbais says: Apr 11, 2012 11:33 AM

I vote Tim Tebow to be “cursed” :) !!!!

  12. Carl Gerbschmidt says: Apr 11, 2012 11:40 AM

Madden Curse is for babies. Let’s go Pack fans, put A-Rodg on the cover – A Super Bowl victory and MVP in NO will put that stupid curse thing to rest once and for all…

  13. southpaw2k says: Apr 11, 2012 11:40 AM

I never thought about this year’s game being called Madden 13. Maybe the unlucky number will cancel out the Madden curse. Or it’ll make it twice as potent, like cursing the two final players competing for the cover.

  14. marvsleezy says: Apr 11, 2012 11:42 AM

The cover athlete is not just on the cover that you throw aside, hes on the opening of the game – So last year, you had to watch Aaron Rodgers frozen image as the game loaded for a hole minute ever time you turned the game on.

    Thumbs down…

I thought Peyton Hillis was on the cover last year?

No way Newton should be on the cover…show me you can do it a couple years in a row like the other three and then ill think about it. My votes for Calvin…..Casey you should stop reading these post at work…lol

  17. CKL says: Apr 11, 2012 12:19 PM

I don’t believe in the curse.
I would love to see Willis get the cover. If anyone ever saw that story on that ESPN show on his life, you wouldn’t be able to help rooting for him, regardless of your favorite team. What an amazing and inspiring person he is. He deserves all the good things that happen for him.

Really?? Are these guys Tim Tebow? Cause only an idiot would let a superstition about a video game cover affect the way they play the game. I guarantee you that when Rodgers breaks huddle, he’s not thinking about the cover of Madden or the ridiculous notion that the #13 is bad.

  20. mikes92nygiants says: Apr 11, 2012 12:33 PM

13 is lucky for italians. i heard cj81 is part italian hahaa.. italian stallion.

Please stop voting for Patrick Willis, thank you.

  22. coachryanmurray says: Apr 11, 2012 1:11 PM

I’m a Bears fan, therefore I currently have a 50% chance of being a happy guy when the cover is announced.

  23. theralph2012 says: Apr 11, 2012 1:13 PM

Just a reminder for Newton supporters, VY down in Tennessee had a big rookie year, was put on the cover the next year, and then his wheels went square. Not saying they are on the same level talent wise, but the comparison should be noted.

  24. driverjim says: Apr 11, 2012 1:19 PM

Well, since his name has entered into discussion . . .

There is no way, no way that Tebow would be associated with Madden so long that the curse exists. Implying such goes against a lot of what the guy stands for.

For those of you saying the curse is garbage: reality is that it’s a convenient tool to use to make fun of people that usually have a crappy season after appearing on the cover/load screen. It does exist as evidenced by Peyton Hillis appearing on the cover last year -this is fact, Google Madden 12 to see the cover- and his season was comparable to a plugged toilet.

Best way to break the Madden Curse: poll the players to find the guy with the dubious moniker of Worst Player (or go find Ryan Leaf), this way all the big play guys survive.

  25. machester52 says: Apr 11, 2012 1:20 PM

The curse is no joke. The people who want their favorite player on the cover are clueless. It never fails.

  26. benjaminkennington says: Apr 11, 2012 1:54 PM

Great to see Patrick Willis get the respect he deserves. Seem’s like he has finally passed Ray Lewis for “best MLB in league” in the minds of most fans.

  27. giantsfan2104 says: Apr 11, 2012 2:00 PM

Put Gregg Williams on the cover!!

  28. jgedgar70 says: Apr 11, 2012 2:51 PM

I don’t usually buy into curses. I usually think curses and conspiracy theories are for weak-minded fools.

    Except for this one.

Please, God, don’t let Cam win. If he does, he’ll destroy his knee on the first snap of training camp so badly he’ll be out for 2 years, we’ll go 0-16 this year and the NFL will move the team to LA.

    _______________

What is weak-minded about a conspiracy theory?

They are a simply a different perspective, often against the grain of the Company Line – many of which have a reasonable amount of facts to support their claims.

Following the rest of the pack for fear of persecution seems to be akin to the “weak-minded”.

All the fans on here who are saying “No way players actually believe in this”, you are dead wrong. I am a Panthers fan and once it looked like Cam would get the cover, I asked one of my friends (who plays for the Panthers) what he thought of the curse. His exact quote was “There is no way I want to be on the cover and I dont want our QB on there either”. And that’s not just his opinion. Players absolutely believe in the curse.

  31. mlmeier says: Apr 11, 2012 6:06 PM

I’m in a keeper league and have Gronk & Cam, so I’m glad to see at least one of them got knocked off. If Cam wins, I’m hoping the “13″ and Madden Curse will just cancel each other out and praying that this “perfect storm” of bad luck doesn’t lead to some career ending injury.

  32. dewalt2990 says: Apr 11, 2012 6:24 PM

You can find a curse in anything if you look hard enough…

  33. emoney826 says: Apr 11, 2012 9:25 PM

You’re a moron if you really believe in curses.

  34. truthserum4u says: Apr 11, 2012 10:07 PM

Can we have a cover with Aaron Rodgers (maybe with Peppers draped all over him) throwing a pass to Calvin Johnson?

    Sincerely,

    A Vikings fan

(perhaps with the curse Minnesota could get to .500 then)

  35. skittlesareyum says: Apr 12, 2012 11:27 AM

The curse is no joke. The people who want their favorite player on the cover are clueless. It never fails.

Ray Lewis didn’t have a problem, unless you count a week 15 injury as the curse, in which case that’s pretty weak.

Larry Fitzgerald didn’t have a problem.

Drew Brees didn’t have a problem. He still had a pretty good season. Or does the curse extend as far as “didn’t win the Super Bowl”?

Seriously guys, here’s the rub: to be on the cover you have to have performed exceptionally well the previous year. It’s almost impossible to perform as well the next year, whether due to individual or team issues. If Rodgers wins but doesn’t post a record passer rating, idiots will say it’s because of the curse. Same thing if Megatron wins but doesn’t set the season TD reception record. etc. etc.

  36. staffordsyear says: Apr 13, 2012 5:59 AM

    @truthserum4u

Your team is gonna need a witchdoctor to cast out spells, prick voodoo dolls and plenty of black cats to get to 500.

  37. briank1ne says: Apr 13, 2012 10:14 AM

patrick willis eats curses for breakfast.

  38. sakatak says: Apr 14, 2012 7:19 PM

Last year Rodgers was a shoe-in for the cover, Packer fans voted for Hillis instead of Rodgers. Packer fans are the smartest fans in the land.
