Tom Benson talked to Drew Brees today, thinks deal is “close”

Although the Saints and Drew Brees haven’t made progress yet in contract talks, Saints owner Tom Benson believes progress is coming.

At a press conference today to announce that he purchased the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets, Benson said he spoke with Brees today and that he thinks the team and its star quarterback are on the same page and not far apart in their expectations for a long-term contract.

I talked to Drew Brees this morning, personally, and told him what was going on and he was very excited about it,” Benson said. “He’s due in next week and we’re close. You know how those things work, and it just takes a little more time, a little patience and we’ve got a few other things going on with the draft and players that’s keeping us real busy. We haven’t forgotten about him. We work on it every day. As I told you, I talked to him personally this morning. He felt very good about us getting involved with this club, with the Hornets. I think that [contract] will be done shortly.”

Even if they haven’t made progress yet, if Benson wants to get the deal done it’s as simple as picking up the phone and telling Brees he’ll get what he’s asking for. With all the negative P.R. the Saints have taken in the wake of the bounty scandal, some positive publicity would be a good thing for Benson to have right now. And the best way to do that is to do what it takes to move a deal with his best and most popular player from “close” to “done.”

This is so dumb … just pay the man ! He broke the record of Marino and won a Super Bowl for you team what’else do you want him to do ?

Perhaps Drew will need someone to explain this to him.

I bet Brees called Benson and deanded an explanation!

  5. paallday says: Apr 13, 2012 4:08 PM

Actually, it’s not as easy as you make it out to be. Rarely have clubs had to weigh the option of paying their star 1/6 of the cap. It’s much more complicated than Benson wanting to get the deal done.

  6. jason1980 says: Apr 13, 2012 4:14 PM

Does anyone here think this deal will not get done? Didn’t think so! Only loser franchise fans are hoping for the Saints demise and are pushing the “where’s Drew’s contract, y’all are in trouble, blah, blah, blah…..”. Knees are shaking all over the NFL, and rightly so. SAINTS BABY!! They’re coming to get ya!!

  7. buffobeel42 says: Apr 13, 2012 4:15 PM

How about Tom takes the $5 million he is saving on Sean Payton’s salary and ‘up’ Drew’s contract by $2.5 million/year for the next 2 years. There you go. Deal done!!!
For Lord’s Sakes, Pay the Man, Tom!!!!! Jeesh!

  8. laeaglefan says: Apr 13, 2012 4:15 PM

Maybe Brees is asking to be the interim coach in addition to his $20 million a year plus contract to be quarterback. Should Benson just call Drew and tell him he’ll get whatever he’s asking for?

  9. bearsstillsuck says: Apr 13, 2012 4:17 PM

I would trade him for all the picks I could get. With everything that happened with the saints, they should just start rebuilding now so they don’t end up like the colts.

Give an explanation on why the Saints kept him in games when the were up by four TDs late in the game against weak teams. The Saints are so tainted now. Everything they accomplished in the last 3 years needs to have an *… Seriously I’m not hating on the Saints at all but why did they keep him in the game when they were up by so much? Where they really just out there to break records while making bad opponents look even worse. I mean blowing out the Colts the way they did was just a horrible thing to watch. What were they trying to prove? That coaching staff was shady. Just add a * to the last three years. Everyone with the exception of Saints fans feel this way.

  11. rajbais says: Apr 13, 2012 4:21 PM

Yes, close to not being done until August!!!

  12. jason1980 says: Apr 13, 2012 4:23 PM

Ahh, stop your whining for heaven sakes! If your team doesn’t want their opponent to run up the score then STOP THEM!! This is a NO CRYING zone, pal.

  13. paallday says: Apr 13, 2012 4:25 PM

    @sbxxix

Obviously you don’t watch a lot of Saints football as the situation that you described literally never happened. Brees was benched multiple times throughout the year. If they wanted to pad his stats, they wouldn’t have pulled him in the third quarter against the Colts. He could have thrown for 10 TDs and 700 yards in that game, easily. Silly hater.

  14. samapoc says: Apr 13, 2012 4:25 PM

How do you make “progress” on an answer that is either “yes” or “no”? These stories are useless.

  15. elmaxoh says: Apr 13, 2012 4:26 PM

    @sbxxix

When your QB is near a NFL record who hasn’t been break since 15 years , you keep him in games even if you win. I mean it was clear to understand that Payton wanted Brees to break the record of Dan.

  16. kingbeason52 says: Apr 13, 2012 4:26 PM

This guy is spending his money on everything…except for a quality top 5 superbowl winning QB that wants to play for his team..nice..

“He broke the record of Marino ”

    ———————-

Seriously, this has to be the most overblown record breaking performance based on the fact 3 other guys broke 5000 yards last year and Rodgers would have as well if he played the last week of the season.

  18. jason1980 says: Apr 13, 2012 4:35 PM

@kingbeason52′ don’t waste your time feeling bad for the Saints, we are a powerhouse, we’ve got this under control bro, If I were you, I would worry about the other 31 teams. See you in the playoffs, or maybe not.

I understand where you’re coming from however, you have to look at the bigger picture here. First of all Dan Marino’s record was in an era in which neither receiver nor the QBs were placed on a bubble to prevent defenders from touching them. Dan did it playing outdoors. I doubt Dan played in as many insignificant games as Brees in which he got garbage stats (Colts game would be a perfect example) and last but not least Dan never had the weapons Brees had. Don’t get me wrong it’s cool to see records be broken but it’s sad to see them be broken that way. Most fans feel this way about his record the same way people feel about the HR record in baseball. 61 HRs in a season was the number to beat and it stood for a long time until steroids came in to the league. I know it’s a little different but the big picture is that record stood for so long because everyone prior to Brees tried to break it the right way by not padding their stats during blowouts. Also if you compare Brees’ indoor and outdoor numbers, they’re polar opposites.

uhhh…seriously? how many times has brees been benched due to blowout scores, in the past 3 years alone? really innacurrate; a statement born of ignorance.

You obviously don’t realize that it isnt about the dollars. It is about the salary cap. And the coach’s salary has nothing to do with that. Think before you write!

  22. chachanola says: Apr 13, 2012 5:40 PM

They can’t use Payton’s salary to pay him. Comes from a different part of the pie. Lastly maybe they are waiting to see who is going to be a long term suspension to use that money for his contract…but hey what do I know

  23. soldiersaint77 says: Apr 13, 2012 5:49 PM

It doesn’t bother me that fans want to defend Marinos record as even though I have been a lifelong Saints fan, Marino has always been one of my favorite players. But if you really go back and look instead of listening to the media. Dan broke the record in a similar offensive explosion era. Only one QB passed for over 4,000 yards until 1978. That was Namath in 72 I think. From 78 until Dan broke it in 85, it became common for 3-5 guys to surpass 4k every year and the record was broken several times in that period. So if you want to use an argument against Brees then use the same argument against Dan. And it’s not like Dan was playing in Buffalo.

That being said I admit that the rules favor the pass heavily now, but Brees is the only one to do it twice. He was only 18 yards short in 2007.

  24. hey804 says: Apr 13, 2012 5:50 PM

    @Kingbeason52

While I agree with you that Marino’s record is more impressive because of the times, you also have to keep in mind that he did everything he could to make sure every play was a passing play and to ensure that the Dophin’s had a crappy run game. This was likely a factor as to why Marino never won a SB.

Brees broke the record last season while simultaneously having a 6th best rushing attack in the league. Just saying…

  25. soldiersaint77 says: Apr 13, 2012 6:30 PM

Apparently, thumps down on this site means facts are frowned upon. Neither I nor hey804 said that Brees had the greatest year just brought up counterpoints for a discussion.

  29. jagsfanugh says: Apr 13, 2012 7:37 PM

Over rated qb. The Bucs of all teams beat em. Let the 5ft 2in qb take a hike.

  30. soldiersaint77 says: Apr 13, 2012 7:47 PM

Wow, you mean that if a team loses any game then the QB is overrated. It’s not like they were playing a hated division rival or anything. You should have at least said the Rams beat them. There you go I helped your ridiculous point out. Most yards in a season, highest completion percentage in a season, only player to go over 5k twice, Super Bowl MVP.

Your right he is clearly overrated.

It was a little bit a payback, that’s all.

Drew Brees will continue to put up huge numbers for four or five more years. The all-time yardage and touchdown records will eventually be his.

P.S. And at least one more SB….
