Another day, another former top-10 draft pick on the wrong side of the law.
Receiver David Terrell, the eighth overall pick in 2001, is being held on $10,000 bond after being charged with domestic battery, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Terrell, who started his four-year career with the Bears, reportedly grabbed a former girlfriend during an argument in his high-rise apartment and threatened to throw her off a balcony. The woman had bruises on her neck, chest, and arms.
Terrell’s lawyer, Shady Yassin (a lawyer named Shady, really?), says his client is innocent. But Shady made a fairly unconvincing case. “At this point it’s just a matter of one step at a time, trying to take care of everything,” Yassin said. “The law affords him the right of being innocent until proven guilty -- and right now he’s innocent. The burden is on the state to prove their case against him.”
Under that standard, everyone who ever has been convicted of any crime in the history of this great nation of ours was, for some finite period of time after committing the crime, innocent.
The process of shifting Terrell from innocent to possibly guilty continues on April 30.
Terrell, a Michigan man, played four seasons in Chicago and one in Denver. His best effort came in 2004, when he started 15 games, and he caught 42 passes for 699 yards. Terrell appeared in only one more regular-season game, with the Broncos in 2005, after being cut earlier that year by the Patriots. After sitting out all of 2006, Terrell returned to the Broncos, but he was released during the preseason.
