Aaron Maybin signs with Jets

The Jets open their offseason program today, and Aaron Maybin will be there.

Maybin confirmed on Twitter this morning that he “just inked the new contract” and is ready to get to work.

As a restricted free agent tendered at the first-round level, Maybin’s contract is a one-year deal with a salary of $1.26 million.

In 2009, Maybin was viewed as one of the top pass rushers in the NFL draft, and the Bills selected him with the 11th overall pick. But Maybin was a huge disappointment in Buffalo, playing in 27 games without ever recording a single sack. After two seasons the Bills had seen enough, and they waived him during training camp last year.

When Maybin caught on with the Jets, however, he found the perfect fit as a situational pass rusher, recording six sacks last season. At the age of 24, Maybin has plenty of room to keep getting better, and the Jets have a talented young player at a relatively inexpensive price. The Bills just wish he could have developed for them like he developed for the Jets.

Hm, maybe Rex Ryan just might be a better coach?
Other than his mouth, the dude is still one of the better football minds in the league.

Bills have Mario Williams now. I’d say they came out slightly ahead in the deal.

One of the few things you have to give the Jets credit for… Maybin looks like a completely new player once he got out of Buffalo.

To bad Maybin can still not play the run.

To bad he still has no Counter Move and just runs around the OTs.

Look he is in the game run right at him. I still cannot understand why the Bills took this one year wonder that has not shown he is willing to put the work in yet, over Orakpo.

For 99 million more they got Mario Williams, I’m sure they would have rather had maybin be the player everyone thought he was going to be.

Maybin wanted to be there early as Rex is going to unveil his latest Lombardi Trophy.

I loved Maybin coming out of the draft it’s nice to see him at least doing something.

obviously but they wasted a 1st round pick, like the jets did with gholston. jets are paying maybin nothing, and obviously he isnt anywhere near to mario williams class, but idk if they came out better in the deal, paying a guy 100mil lol

He left school too early. He made the right decision as far as getting that initial contract but he was not ready for life in the NFL.

When all time draft busts are discussed, there is so much attention paid to QBs (Ryan Leaf, Heath Shuler, JaMarcus Russell) and other offensive players, not nearly enough attention paid to defensive busts like Courtney Brown or Aaron Maybin.

Bill Belichick – first three years as a HC = three 3rd place finishes in the AFC Central

Rex Ryan – first three years as a HC = two AFC Championship game appearances

Looks like Rex is ahead of Belichick’s track. Then again, no one ever accused New England sports fans of being very smart about anything.

Rex will get 12 sacks and 5 forced fumbles out of maybins this year and a another 15 sacks and 7 forced fumbles and 2 TDs out of our #1 UPSHAWS. This year.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. bonerchamp says: Apr 16, 2012 11:27 AM

He can’t play the run. He’s 220 lbs. He sucks.

  15. george1859 says: Apr 16, 2012 11:30 AM

Maybin has one move and one move only, and that’s a speed rush from the outside.

Once teams see him lined up on 3rd and long, they will figure out that running straight at him for the 1st down will work every time.
    The dude can’t tackle…

I will tell you exactly how this rolled out. Buffalo never should have drafted him where they did. Being a bad defense they didn’t have to option to just use him as a situational pass rusher. They should have taken Orakpo instead who more well rounded. After a few years Maybin got frustrated and lazy but the reality was he was just a bad fit. He needed to go where someone needs a situational pass rusher. If the Jet’s D ever gets to the point where teams are running on them all the time, he will be right back where he was in Buffalo. So the way it is, right now he is a good fit where he is. Ironically with the additions Buffalo made in the off season, he might now be a good fit in Buffalo. Everyone should be happy. Some players are much better when they fit. This plays out a lot. Just look at Deon Sanders. I know Sanders fans will get all excited but Deon was a good player on a bad team. So what does he do to his credit for the rest of his career is he goes to good teams that are on the verge of winning superbowls. Deon will make a good team great but just like Maybin they can’t make a bad team good.

I’m sure Buffalo really is disappointed Maybin didn’t work out for them. He was drafted by Jauron ’cause he fit in his cover-2 scheme which utilizes undersized DEs. Gailey had no part in this draft choice, and didn’t seem to keen on keeping Maybin or giving him an opportunity. Don’t think the Bills really care what Maybin does at this point. By the way, the guy is a one-dimensional speed rusher with no run stopping ability, not to mention no football instincts to speak of. Another classic example of New York hype.

  18. asw1028 says: Apr 16, 2012 12:28 PM

Florio, this has noting to do with Maybin ‘panning out.’ The Bills don’t know how to develop players, they just draft them and hope for the best. The Jets look at a player’s skill set and figure out how to use it within their system. Maybin is successful with the Jets because they use him as a situational pass rusher–a role that fits what he is able to do. And for all you people complaining about him against the run, that’s never been a part of his skill set. Maybin is used on likely passing downs but sometimes teams run when you think they’ll pass and he gets exploited–it’s called strategy.

Maybin is god awful and will always be awful

  20. Jim says: Apr 16, 2012 12:43 PM

Maybin is still just a few rounds of steroids away from being a good player.

  21. ghostofgilchrist says: Apr 16, 2012 12:46 PM

Watch his six sacks and show me one where he actually sheds a block.

  22. clifford84 says: Apr 16, 2012 12:53 PM

He’s the same player he’s always been.

If he isn’t blocked by an offensive lineman and has 5+ seconds to get to the QB, he’ll do so.

Once an OT gets his hands on him, it’s all over.

  23. billsfan27 says: Apr 16, 2012 1:04 PM

Aaron Maybin can’t spell Aaron Maybin.

  24. theralph2012 says: Apr 16, 2012 1:30 PM

An absolute joke. This guy came out of college and shaved MayHem into his head. He wreaked a lot of mayhem with all of his special teams tackles and DNPs his first two years. He doesn’t want to work and is too dumb to figure out how to shed blocks, hes got speed, yes but so do cheetahs. Extremely upset when the Bills drafted him over Orakpo but extremely happy to see him go. NYJ, enjoy youre .5 sacks per year.

bozo, next time you come to Boston, feel free to take in a game and tour some of the country’s top universities and colleges. We appreciate a college education up here.

You need to stop hating everything New England just because Bill Belichick has a lock on the AFC East and has gone to five of the last eleven Super Bowls. Even though the Jets have not been to the Super Bowl since 1969, that doesn’t mean they’re not a fun team to watch.

  27. polishkingski says: Apr 16, 2012 2:12 PM

say what you want but ryan got 6 sacks out of the guy. bills did not have a clue on how to use him. as a bills fan i enjoy making fun of my team as much as i enjoy a good polish joke.

Because he is a Restricted Free Agent signed for $1.26 Million. Why give a multiyear deal to a RFA you can get for a little over a million.

If i remember correctly, Ryan cut him last year, and brought him back ONLY because of injuries. I watched in earnest when he played, being a Bills fan, and I saw a guy who got sacks when the coverage was so good the QB ran into him, not the other way around. He never once beat an LT and got a clean sack. Rex picked him up when everybody else passed only because he was a childhood friend of Rex’s sons. he did a friend a favor, but when he knew he couldn’t play, cut him. When he brough him back, he was the recipient of garbage time sacks. He may not make the team out of camp this year, and if he doesn’t, and is a FA, someone will look at him because of the garbage sacks, and soon figure out why the Jets cut him twice in 2 years. He has a burst, nut isn’t fast. he clocked the forty around the same time as Tom Brady. He will only sack if there is great coverage and the Qb doesn’t unload, other than that, he’s a liability, not an asset. You can have him NY. I hope he starts. That way when you play the Bills this year, Jackson and Spiller can leave clete marks on his puss right nest to the “mayhem” carved in his noggin. P.S., don’t draft a pass rusher, you got him!

  32. gobills716 says: Apr 17, 2012 9:15 AM

@polishkingski: did you see any of Maybin’s sacks from last year? Tell me how REX RYAN’S coaching was remotely responsible for any of those sacks. Darrell Revis and Co. had more to do with those sacks than Maybin himself.

P.S. Why did the Polish family stop having children after 4?…they heard on the news that 1 in every 5 children born today is Chinese…

  33. win1soon says: Apr 17, 2012 9:42 AM

Was it just me or did anyone else notice that after Maybin had his biggest game against the Skins…we NEVER heard from him again, as he was probably double teamed! Maybe one on one on 3rd and 22 he can be a force, but give me a break, although Jaruon sucked as a head coach, but he does know defense and gave the guy every chance as did Gailey, but face it, he could not get on the field on Buffalo’s horrible defense…and I am a Bills fan so I can say that!
