Getty ImagesJets guard Matt Slauson recently echoed the sentiments that trickled out after the Jets acquired quarterback Tim Tebow. With Mark Sanchez as the starter and Tim Tebow as the part-time Wildcat option, the Jets will have two separate offenses, making it harder for defenses to get ready to face them.
Still, a couple of Pro Bowl defenders think that the Jets won’t be two teams for too long. Broncos linebacker Von Miller, for example, believes that Tebow eventually will bump Sanchez to the sidelines.
“I think everybody is making a mistake if you think he’s just going to go there and be a Wildcat quarterback or a situational quarterback,” Miller said Monday, via comments distributed by the team. “The Tebow that I know is just going to take it one day at a time, he’s going to grind, he’s going to come in and be consistent and you never know. He could have that starting spot. You never know what happens during games. An injury and he’s the next guy up. So, I think guys are mistaken if they just think he’s going to be a situational quarterback. He’s going to go in there and he’s going to compete for that starting job.”
Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, who faced Sanchez and Tebow twice each last season, separately was asked on Monday to pick a starter between the two. “Tebow,” Wilfork said while taking part in the Patriots’ Hall Speaker Series, via the Boston Herald. “He’s a winner. He’s proven.”
Wilfork then apparently realized that what he said could be used again him when the Pats prepare to face the Jets this year. “I mean, I’ll tell you what, both have positives and negatives,” Wilfork said. “You really can’t go wrong. I’m glad I’m not in that boat. Put it like that.”
Still, Wilfork raved about Tebow before the Patriots hosted the Broncos in the playoffs. “[H]e’s just a tough, tough guy to prepare for,” Wilfork said at the time, via ESPNBoston.com. “You can speak all day about how tough he is, and how elusive he is, but it really don’t matter until you face him. And when you face him, you really figure out, ‘Man, this dude is like a running back.’ He’s a big dude, a strong guy. I know we talked about it, but I didn’t realize. He’s just a physical guy, his stature, just a big guy. I’ve seen some big guys over the years, but he’s probably one of the biggest and toughest, probably one of the strongest, that I’ve faced.”
Of course, Wilfork and the Patriots beat Tebow soundly last year, both times they played him: 41-23 in December and 45-10 in January.
If every quarterback was that tough to prepare for, the Pats would never lose a game.
