Steelers unveil new throwback jersey

For their 80th season in the NFL and the first season of the NFL’s partnership with Nike, the Steelers have retired their recent alternate uniform and unveiled a new throwback ensemble, from 1934.

It features black numbers in white rectangles, over a collection of black and gold horizontal stripes.  (Some Seahawks fans will say it reminds them of the jerseys that the officials should have been wearing during Super Bowl XL.)

With the new/old jerseys will be decidedly non-Nike tan-colored pants.  The Steelers will ditch the yellow helmets, at least for a year, wearing their black helmets.

  4. jerrycola says: Apr 17, 2012 5:59 PM

Might be the worst throwback uniform I have ever seen and what they should do is throw it back and pick a new one.

  5. citizenstrange says: Apr 17, 2012 5:59 PM

We don’t need no stinkin’ THROWBACKS!

Seriously though, I like the throwbacks they had – maybe it was the very first year of throwbacks – that had the vertical stripes mixed in and liik more like a rugby shirt.

These are from the days when the Rooney’s fixed gambling and crooked horse racing empire often recruited incarcerated inmates to fill out the roster.

I give the Steelers credit for doing something bold with their unis. Being too cool to celebrate the past or do something different from what has been done before is actually not cool at all.

  15. codysteeler says: Apr 17, 2012 6:10 PM

I love them! Can’t wait for these uniforms to swarm manning in game one of the season!

  17. jaggedmark says: Apr 17, 2012 6:11 PM

  18. dcouzens75 says: Apr 17, 2012 6:11 PM

Looks like a combo of referee numbers, prison stripes and a bumble bee. Gotta be the most hideous uniforms in the league.

  48. steelerfan9598 says: Apr 17, 2012 6:32 PM

Ha ha ha ha… those are hideous!! Thank you for finally FINALLY being the first NFL team to release a jersey more hideous than those infamous neon green jerseys our team vomited out a few years ago. THANK YOU!!!

  56. mojosmagic says: Apr 17, 2012 6:39 PM

They look more throw up then throw back however Ben looks good in the prison stripe look.

  57. buzmeg says: Apr 17, 2012 6:39 PM

Doesn’t “throwback” imply they wear authentic jerseys from a bygone era? Not this newly designed bumble bee/prison garb.

  58. olcap says: Apr 17, 2012 6:40 PM

If it’s their 80th anniversary, then why don’t they wear the year 1 uniforms as the throwback, 1932? Why the year three uniform?

  66. babyhorsemorgan says: Apr 17, 2012 6:54 PM

Next, the Steelers will ask their players to submit to “throwback” haircuts, film their antics in black and white, and market the product as “The Fifty Three Stooges In Jail” series.

  67. palinforpresidentofnorthkorea says: Apr 17, 2012 6:54 PM

  74. redwards29a says: Apr 17, 2012 7:26 PM

Speaking of the Seahawks… how many painfully ugly uniforms is Nike planning to put out this year?

  75. southpaw2k says: Apr 17, 2012 7:27 PM

  76. bearsrulepackdrool says: Apr 17, 2012 7:30 PM

  77. whodeybytches says: Apr 17, 2012 7:34 PM

Absolutely PERFECT for the Steeler fanbase, annoying and way to “over the top”. Just like always, they are worried about the past instead of takin care of business in the present and future

  78. mikeyfresh25 says: Apr 17, 2012 7:45 PM

Their current alternate was perfectly fine, this is worse than that Blue and Yellow Eagles throwback that one year. This makes no sense

  79. socalseahawker says: Apr 17, 2012 7:48 PM

  81. mrfrostyj says: Apr 17, 2012 7:53 PM

You know, I thought it was kind of goofy when the Browns basically said screw it and dumped every jersey but their away ones last season but now I understand. They were probably presented with this idea and was like “we’d rather just not have a home or alternate jersey if it’s going to be brown and orange stripes”.

Good lord this jersey is UGLY. They’re going to look like the Pittsburgh Honey Bee’s.

  82. kenudo says: Apr 17, 2012 7:56 PM

  126. babyhorsemorgan says: Apr 18, 2012 12:30 AM

Caption at the bottom of the screen will say “Jailbreak!” as the players leave the huddle and the film is speeded up on screen. Then all these guys in prison stripes, herky jerk around on the screen a bit before they all end up in a pile on the ground. Finally a stern man with a moustache and a whistle (“Tweet!”) will admonish the pile and point off into the distance.

Whole family will be on the couch with you, laughing and laughing.

  127. finnsteeler says: Apr 18, 2012 4:13 AM

All I have to say to the copious amonts of haters out there…at least we had a team and fan base in the 1930’s unlike most of you!

  133. sudz28 says: Apr 18, 2012 1:11 PM

  134. Deb says: Apr 18, 2012 5:15 PM

Not a Nike fan, but this has nothing to do with them. The Rooneys chose to use the 1934 jersey as this year’s throwback for the team’s 80th anniversary. They’ll only wear them for two games. The socks are kind of growing on me. But just because I’d wear them to sleep on a cold winter’s night doesn’t mean I want to see them on my football team.

All I have to say to the copious amounts of haters out there…at least we had a team and fan base in the 1930′s unlike most of you!

    Typical Squealer fan.

Look up your team’s history sometime. The team was the
laughingstock of the entire NFL for most of its first 40 seasons.

One playoff appearance in that span…
and they even LOST that game!
Also, most seasons they had losing records.

Delusional Stooler fans wanna think Chuck Knoll was their first
coach & they act like the team & the NFL didn’t exist before 1965.

Call us haters. We hate because the Steeler fan base is delusional…

    Resembles a prison uniform.

    Quite appropriate, I think…

Yesterday I thought they were ridiculous, but when I looked at the larger photos today, I changed my mind. They grew on me. I think these will be very popular jersies. Cha ching!

    @quitsburghstoolers …

I can’t imagine why any fan would deny the team’s past. To me, the fact that our team didn’t win a playoff game for the first 40 years of its existence is one of the more interesting parts of its history. That just makes the 70s story more powerful.

Yeah, hon, sure … you’ve wrapped your entire PFT existence around the Steelers because you’re miffed that our fan base is delusional. That makes perfect sense. Talk about people in denial LOL

Dude, you’re a fan of the Browns, Ravens, or Bengals, and bitter over the Steelers’ success of the last 40+ years. That’s why you chose your screen name and why you mouth off on all our threads. Didn’t you know? We feed on that stuff.

The uniforms are ugly but give me a break haters. The first forty years of our franchise was terrible? Who cares I wasn’t even alive in the 30’s 40′ 50’s and 60’s who cares. We still have the most superbowls and are a playoff team every year

Check out your own team’s fashion sense (if it even existed in 1933) here:

This is why the Browns have the perfect uniform. Their throwbacks look the same as the modern uniform.

May the steelers play as well this season as when they orignally wore these uniforms.

I would love it if the Ravens had throwbacks identical to the Browns.

These uniforms should be called “throw out” jerseys instead because that’s what needs to be done with them.
