Trent Baalke still considers Gregg Williams a friend

There was an overwhelmingly negative reaction to the speech Gregg Williams gave to his Saints defense before their playoff game with the 49ers, but the general manager of the targeted team says it didn’t change his reaction of the former Saints defensive coordinator.

Trent Baalke worked with Williams in 2004 when Williams was the defensive coordinator of the Redskins and Baalke was part of the team’s scouting staff. Baalke said that he reached out to Williams after the tape was released earlier this month and told Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee that his opinion of Williams didn’t change as a result of anything Williams said to the Saints.

“I worked with Gregg,” Baalke said. “And Gregg’s a friend, always been a friend. It was only fitting that you reach out and speak with him, and I felt very good about the conversation.”

If enough other former colleagues of Baalke’s feel the same way — Jeff Fisher has already indicated he’d work with Williams again — there might be a chance at a return to the NFL for Williams if he is able to satisfy the league’s requirements for reinstatement.

Very few real football people were offended by it. Gotta love the media sensationalizing it and taking it out of context to stir up drama.

They probably feel bad that he had to be the sacrificial lamb for something that all teams do. I’d imagine if the NFL got involved it was something that has gotten way out of control and needed to be reined in. Lets face it the league doesn’t do anything proactively. Before you start flaming I’m not a Saints fan just a realist.

Ban that Psycho from the NFL.

Keep smilin’. Keep shinin’. Knowing you can always count on Trent.

    For sure.

    cakemixa,

fair point. but be that as it may, you have to wonder why this Baalke made his comments public. If I were Gore or Crabtree, and Williams called for my head (or knee, etc.) and Baalke defended Williams publicly instead of the guys on his own team, I’d have a problem with that.

    Should’ve kept his mouth shut.

Just because he reached out to Williams doesn’t mean that all teams do it and he feels bad that Williams is taking the heat. I don’t think any defensive meetings include talk of “outside ACLs”, but most everything else Williams said might be said by other coaches. Getting RBs heads sideways is common talk and can’t be taken literally. It’s the NFL, it’s a tough game.

I still hate the Saints, and remain most unimpressed with their front-running, whiny fans. I mean look at this crap, what a pansy fanbase, doesn’t match their former DC’s style well at all:

“The SF journalists and fans at the Saints NOLA website called for stretcher games and glory in taking out other players rendering the team one-dimensional. Broke Romo’s ribs, broke Clemens ankle, concussed P Thomas. Seems the team is intimidated to win on skill. Players on the kick off return looked like demons from hell. Is this the NFL??? Team seems to reflect the fan base. Really creepy and full of bullies.”

But Gregg Williams is right up there with Hitler and Mussolini. He’s a horrible horrible person because he wanted his players to play the game like it used to be played 10 and 20 years ago.

Such hypocrisy in the NFL and especially on this website. If you don’t think that type of speech has been the norm rather than the exception for the past 50 years that you are living in La-La land, singing Kumbaya with your rose colored glasses on.

Football is a violent sport wussies. Get over it and PS….49er fans are the 2nd biggest whiners in the league only behind the viking fans

49er fans are the most frontrunner, the least knowledgeable of any NFL fan. LA would have the title, but they have no team.

Baalke’s response to the situation and Saints fans continuing to spew venom at the team in every 49ers thread show us two things clearly:

    1) Baalke’s a pretty classy dude, and he’s built a classy team.

    2) Saints fans are trashy, ignorant whiners who take after their former defensive coordinator and clearly STILL haven’t gotten over getting beaten by a superior team in the playoffs last year. Talk. About. Pathetic.

And you people wonder why so many fans of every other team in the NFL have been enjoying this scandal so thoroughly??? Hint: nobody likes your front-running, venom-spewing fanbase. Take a lesson from Gregg Williams, learn some humility and manners and then come back to us. Just like Baalke, we’ll forgive you.

I see Trent’s trying to be the bigger person. Hmm, what if Gregg Williams’ plan actually worked & our dear 49ers were severely injured AND lost the game? Would you still “reach out” to your good buddy Gregg?

The Saints can talk all they want in the locker room the Niners will do the talking on the field once again.
